Week one- Which FCS team is most likely to upset an FBS opponent?

In week 1...I think that's gotta be James Madison "upsetting" East Carolina. I almost wouldn't even call that an upset though, although technically by division level, it is.

Other "decent chances" at an upset:
Fordham @ Army
Eastern Washington @ Texas Tech
Cal Poly @ San Jose State
Northern Iowa @ Iowa State
Youngstown State @ Pitt
Albany @ Old Dominion

I don't think any of these would "blow my mind" if the upsets happened.

As much as I'd like to say we are going to beat them, its not likely. I would like to beat them then have the pigs of UA-fayetteville play them in a bowl game and lose. Would be delicious in-state justice. xlolx

ACU has about a 2% chance of beating a solid New Mexico team. Those odds look great compared to the probability of us beating Colorado State on the 9th. I watched their game against Oregon State yesterday. This may be CSU's best team ever. If they slap Colorado around next week the same way they beat up Oregon State, ACU will be in for a very long afternoon.

We aren't beating UM-C, but I hear their secondary is God awful. As in, among the worst in FBS.

If this Huslig kid has anything, we should put up some points, maybe end up with a 73-31 situation. We have two genuinely good WRs and an all-conference TE.

If the offense can clean some things up and the bye week gets everyone back healthy we may have enough on defense to keep the GT game competitive. UTC absolutley could NOT run on us last night.

From what I saw, not sure they'll be able to run on anyone with a decent front seven. At least until they get their starting QB back.

Eastern Eagles have a chance vs Texas Tech, there is a LOT of question about our offense this season. All of the offensive coaches, with the exception of Best, are new. The Eagle defense has been pretty tough in scrimmages this fall. The question is, is the offense untypically ineffective this season or is the senior laden defense ready to play.

Fordham has a fair chance against Army. The Rams defense does not match up very well with the Black Knights option offense. Fordham will score but I don't think they'll keep up in a pretty hostile environment. Michie Stadium can get rather rowdy/loud....

While I agree it's unlikely, it sure will be interesting to see how Chase Edmonds does against Army's defense. And Massey is giving Fordham about a 16% chance of a win, which is within a point or two of what the odds are for Youngstown to take down Pitt, which, while also unlikely, is not an impossible feat.

Good to know. Add two years of experience to him and the knowledge that they beat them last time they played...and I like their odds. Obviously 1 running back does not a football team make, but he's a big part of their offense and has had success in that situation in the past.

As I said, none of the other ones I listed were odds-on favorites to win their games either, just that they had a halfway decent shot to do it and it wouldn't completely surprise me to see a few of them turn out in the FCS team's favors.

Georgia State is a dumpster fire on offense. Their QB is probably worse than most Tennessee State will face in the OVC, they've got no one at running back, and basically only 1 playmaker at receiver.

Their defense is pretty good and they've got their DC Nate Fuqua from Wofford who is legit and that might save them.

We should learn a lot about TSU tonight.

2 questions to watch for:

1.) How is TSU's run game?

2.) How good is the defense outside of Ogundeko?

It's also time to see if Treon Harris can live up to the hype.

Indeed...
New Mexico State (The Aggies) went 3-9 last year.
New Mexico (The Lobos) went 8-4 in the regular season last year and beat UTSA in the New Mexico Bowl.
Although...NMSU somehow beat UNM by 1 point in their head-to-head game last year.

UNM will most likely beat ACU.
NMSU doesn't technically play a FCS team this season, although it's their last year in the Sun Belt, so it could be argued that in terms of quality of football, maybe half the teams they play are "on-par" with decent FCS teams.

I've heard they got some really decent DB's this year, and their DL should be able to get decent pressure with Ogundeko getting most of the double teams.

BTW: The game actually sold out. Don't know if that's just due to the curiousity of playing in the renovated Turner Field, or GA State finally developing a fan base.

Prabably a combination of the bolded statement above and the opponent. Tennessee hasn't played in Atlanta since 2010 and they have a big following here.

Where are all the UNI fans saying this is the year they beat Iowa State?

Well considering we beat them last year and 3 of the last 5 it is old hat. However, I think most UNI fans are really bearish on the team this year while actually being quite bullish on the Cyclones.

2nd year under Campbell with some pretty good weapons in the passing game could spell trouble especially since we have a CB who recently moved from S, and our safeties are fairly young i.e. redshirt freshman and true freshman as his backup.

Some things never change. I remember NMSU being the worst team back in NCAA Football 98 on the PS1. Almost 20 years later they are still terrible.

Random weird facts about the 2004 New Mexico State "Eggies":

NCAA Football 2005 actually thought they were decent, with B/B/B- splits. However, this edition of the series notoriously overrated mid-major teams, particularly in the MAC who were getting "Little Ten" hype at the time. Their #15 Clemson had the same splits.
NMSU had what was on the surface a respectable 5-6 season, including a winning record in Sun Belt play. However, two of the wins were over Florida Atlantic and Florida International, both fresh programs still transitioning to Division I.
2004 was the last season of Tony Samuel's tenure. NMSU's offense ran primarily of the Power-I (Christ how college football has evolved in 13 years). Samuel's replacement was...Hal Mumme, in a great example of going in a completely different direction only to achieve the same results.
2004 was also the last season NMSU would compete in the Sun Belt for the time, moving to the WAC in the offseason as part of a much larger game of mid-major musical chairs.

(If you read all that, credit to you. That's way too much info to dedicate to such a nondescript team.)

TSU's DL and OL controlled the LOS the entire game. This should put JSU and UT-Martin on notice. The Nashville Tigers need to work on their red zone offense and situational play-calling, however.

Agreed. They should have beat UT into the dirt. That QB they got is a stud.

I'm still stunned that Butch Jones, one of the most "rah-rah" and least X's and O's coaches in the country managed to win against Georgia Tech. I mean, Georgia Tech exposes every poorly coached team they play...except that one, I guess.

I told a Tennessee fan friend that if Jones couldn't win the SEC East with the roster he had last year, he should not only be fired but banned from ever entering the state of Tennessee again. The talent disparity was ridiculous and he still couldn't leverage it. That's two miracles Butch has pulled in the last year - the first was keeping his job.

They don't want to risk falling even further down in the pecking order. He'll keep them in the 8-9 win category. lol

Yeah well 5 stars all over your defense can do that for a team. They didn't seem to have a good scheme going for GT at all. They sat in soft zone coverage most of the game and let GT run rampant. Soft zone coverage isn't in our playbook.

Glad to see our subdivision making them work for it, but I'm not sure any of these will be wins. We've shown plenty of times our 1s are as good as G5 and some P5 1s, but once rotations start being felt in the 2nd half the FBS pulls away. Their 2nd and 3rd strings don't have nearly as much drop off as ours do.

I thought this would be the most likely upset this year. Generally Kentucky as an FBS flagship school is terrible. Still possible, but EKU looks to have gotten tired.

Tennessee State over Georgia State
James Madison over East Carolina
Liberty over Baylor
Howard over UNLV

South Dakota over Bowling Green

6 wins so far, plus the usual mixture of close calls. This feels relatively normal, I think, though I'd be curious to see what our overall numbers have been over the last few years.

Last year there were 10. A few years back we set the record - around 16 or so. I am not sure when was the last time the FCS win count was in the single digits.
