Fordham is damn good this year with their QB healthy, but I don't see this being a BLOWOUT. SHU has an athletic QB that can extend plays, good receivers and a legitimate run game with K. Spence. Teams get very amped up for a first ever playoff appearance (see Wagner over Colgate last year). I'm picking Fordham to win this one, but it won't be a blowout like many expect. Both teams should be happy with this matchup. If the seedings weren't so darn regional this year, both teams could've ended up in tougher predicaments such as Fordham hosting a SDSU like NAU has to, and SHU could have been travelling to an NDSU, EWU, or EIU.

I think that's a fair take, UNH. I don't think we will be overlooking anyone btw.

Fwiw, Lafayette is a tough team right now IMO and completely different from the one who played earlier this year

Should be a good one. Really looking forward too it. And don't think SHU has any more hunger in this one than the Rams. Fordham was a laughing stock two years ago, and are hardly a yearly playoff team. They will certainly not be overlooking this one.

Your seeing two Top 25 offenses here, but I think Sacred Heart's Defense surprises people. They're a top 15 scoring defense at about 20 points a game along with being the best Turnover Margin team in FCS. I don't know if Fordham QB's is going to be playing, so I will wait until later in the week to pick this one.

Our QB played yesterday and left the game healthy, so I don't see any reason why he would not play next week.

I think it will be a close game and hope my Rams can pull it out not only b/c we would advance, but also b/c it would mean I have a 7 mile trip to the 2nd round game.

No it was the game where SHU dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball, got homered all night, endured the most embarrassing game delay ever for the singing of "happy birthday" to a guy in a costume, and had our Freshman QB lead his team on a game winning drive in the last 2 minutes.

Looking forward to a great game at Fordham. Should be a great matchup with Fordham's explosive offense against SHU's opportunistic defense. Hoping SHU can establish the run game and looking for a huge game from our big RB.

Ya, but that didn't actually happen because the game ended when that QB threw an int. How could you possibly state that SHU got the short end of the officiating stick?

Fordham is going to win by a comfortable margin.

I think Fordham has a very good chance to win. That said, SHU has some quality skill players - I saw several of them bedevil Colgate in Hamilton last season - and they will be sky high to prove they belong. NYC media will also pay some attention to this game because of "home team" Fordham and nearby SHU, which is a moderate auto trip away in Fairfield, CT.

Even knowing Fordham's Quarterback is going to be playing, I think Sacred Heart's Defense shows up to pull the upset at Fordham. It's going to be a game that comes down to the final two minutes and Sacred heart pulls this out.

There was a pretty thorough pre-game assessment of Sacred Heart's running game on the Lafayette board. They have two excellent, complementary RBs who can play with anyone.

http://lafayettesports.myfreeforum.org/about2519.html

Also check out the post-mortem thread on the Lafayette board. We knew what was coming but we just couldn't stop it. We actually dealt with Koonce better than we handled those two guys.

thanks Bogie. Sounds like one helluva running game. One good thing is that it sounds like they run the Colgate offense, which we obviously just had a week worth of prep facing. The one bad thing is that up until this past weekend we've never really been able to stop the Colgate offense.

This one could be a barn burner.

The 'Gate offense you saw consisted of frosh and sophs; all two-deep players were either injured or Biddle kept them out of the game so he could look at guys for next season.

That said, I'm thinking the Rams should take SH and also Towson in the second round.

Best part is SHU literally has nothing to lose. A win, would be the NEC's 2nd playoff win in the last 4 years (since getting the AQ). Of course both playoff wins would come over PL opponents.

If the Pioneers pull it off they would be 3-0 vs. the Patriot League this year. I think they have more than a fighting chance at the win. Would be absolutely spectacular for the NEC and would really be a demoralizing loss for the PL. The pressure and expectations are on the Rams.

In my mind, I've always placed Georgetown, Fordham and Holy Cross in the same Baptismal Font. Then there's everything from Manhattan College to Iona to Siena to Canisius to Sacred Heart to St. Elizabeth's Graduate Nunnery at Convent Station, New Jersey. It's the Vatican on down, on the one hand, and the local Parrish school on up, on the other hand. It's bigoted, unfair and wrongheaded, I know. But that's just the way I've always seen it. Maybe perception really is everything.

Seton Hall and Mount St. Mary's get special dispensation because . . . well, Catholics know why.

No bleachers for this weekend. Probably due to the holiday and students being away, tickets are not selling as they did for some of the regular season games. There was talk about bringing them in had we gotten a bye and hosted a game on Dec. 7th.

Traditionally the 1st playoff round has poor attendance for the reasons you mention above. Even schools with great attendance seem to struggle at the gate this week.

Back in the day, Holy Cross, Fordham, BC, and (maybe) St. Joe's were considered the natural peers to Georgetown. It does cause some ecclesiastical indigestion when Georgetown's aspirational peers have now become Duke, Brown, and Penn.

Then again, and the Cross folks will remind you, there was a time when HC, Fordham, and Notre Dame were considered the top Catholic destination schools, with BC being more of a outlier for those that couldn't go to Worcester.

In the 1960s, Time Magazine published an article called "The Catholic Ivy League," which identified Notre Dame, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Fordham, Boston College and St. Louis U as the nation's premier Catholic colleges. That article was on the wall of every (Catholic) grammar school and high school that I ever entered during the late 60s and 1970s, and it was thoroughly ingrained into my consciousnesses.

In recent times, Villanova been counted among this group, often to the exclusion of St. Louis. Where I grew up (a town which was largely working-class Catholic in the NYC area), admission to Fordham was viewed like getting into Harvard. It wasn't until I was in Law School that I realized WASPs didn't view Fordham as highly as Catholics do. xlolx

I grew up in a very catholic town in Pa. In the old days, the best football players in the region went to Fordham. This of course was when Fordham was a national power. Penn State was an afterthought. A few guys seemed to have gone to Pitt and Notre Dame, but otherwise it was Fordham.

The Patriot League is NOT the Ivy League; I'd allow Ivy posters to be pretentious d-bags, but it's so annoying when PL posters take shots at people's degrees. We get it; you have a Patriot League degree, you did well in school, great. But where are the Harvard and Yale people taking shots at other schools' academics? How many Richmond, W&M, Villanova posters on here take shots at academics? They could...but they don't. Patriot League xnonox

Lucky indeed. Great game Pioneers. I still believe that Fordham is very good. Towson/Fordham will be a very fun game to watch. Towson must avoid turnovers, which have been the Tigers' Achilles' Heel and have to keep Fordham from getting early scores. Terrance West should be able to run on the Fordham defense, if the Tigers can stay within their game plan. Towson has one of the top o-lines in the country.
