Want to talk about putting your program in a tough spot? Well, Alabama State really had no choice in the wake of "hundreds" of violations. Put it like that because many of the violations are the same one, just involving lots of players -- though numerous people are touting hundreds, which is wrong....

The school already imposed severe sanctions on its own football program, reducing the number of scholarships by 30 and a reduction in the number of players. Both penalties would be harsh sanctions if handed down by the NCAA.

Additional penalties are a possibility given the large number of violations and an admitted disregard for compliance and certification.

Alabama St is asking the NCAA for help...

Alabama State University officials will plead for mercy today when they go before the NCAA infractions committee.

School officials are hoping their cooperation with the NCAA and the penalties they imposed on their own athletic program will convince the committee not to impose harsher sanctions.

"Basically, they'll be asking for leniency," said Donald Jackson, a local attorney who has argued two cases before the committee. "There's just not much else they could do. They've already admitted to the majority of the violations."

Jackson believes the school will spend time today outlining the number of penalties ASU has imposed on its football team and explaining improvements to the university's compliance department, which polices NCAA rules.

After submitting a self-report to the NCAA in 2003, ASU imposed 30 scholarship cuts and limited the number of players on its football team. It also placed itself on two years' probation and fired head football coach L.C. Cole.
