Down South: From Preseason Cellar to Championship
Jason Plotkin, CSN Columnist

In two of the last three years, teams have come from fourth or lower in the preseason polls to win the Southland. In 2005, Nicholls State was picked sixth out of seven, yet emerged to win a share of the conference and 2004 saw a Sam Houston State team slotted fourth by the coaches and fifth by the SIDs win a share of the conference title. While the 2005 Colonels and 2004 Bearkats shared the conference title with teams that were expected to have success, their rise to the top of the conference was not foreseen by those who closely watch the conference.

So, which team will surprise all? Having watched everything gone haywire in conference play during the years I have followed the Southland, I can’t say I would be surprised to see any team win the conference whether it is preseason favorite McNeese or a team picked in the cellar like Southeastern Louisiana.
