New McNeese staff is in place

    McNeese announces new football staff...
They are basically the former Baylor staff, minus the Briles...

Don’t know where we got the money yet...

HEAD COACH – STERLIN GILBERT- Coach Gilbert has been at Eastern Illinois, Tulsa, Baylor, Texas, and South Florida. You may notice the connections of his assistant from the tree of Art Briles and Dino Babers. Babers has been HC at Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green, and Syracuse. I expect Gilbert will coach the quarterbacks.

ADD JIMMY FOWLER AS DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS: COACH FOWLER COMES TO MCNEESE FROM NAVARRO COLLEGE WHERE HE WAS DFO FOR JIM GUSH.

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR-MATT MATTOX- Coach Mattox will coach the offensive line at McNeese as he has done in previous stops with Gilbert at Eastern Illinois, Tulsa, Texas, and USF. Mattox has worked at the University of Houston as a GA and is from the Art Briles tree.

TIGHT END COACH -DEREK SHAY – I am not sure if Shay will be an assistant offensive line coach or handle the tight ends. This will be a decision based on Tyler Bolfing’s responsibilities. Shay played at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green and worked as a GA at Eastern Illinois. He had coached OL at Indianapolis High School power house Warren Central as well as coaching the OL for the USA Football Under 17 National Developmental Team. He currently is the OL coach at #1 ranked IMG Academy in Florida.

UNDETERMINED-TYLER BOLFING- Tyler coached the tight ends for Lance Guidry, but it has not been announced what position he will be coaching. Tyler played at McNeese as well as spent two years with Coach Viator at ULM.

RUNNING BACKS COACH- LANDON HOEFER- This has not been confirmed by Sterlin Gilbert, but I am assuming if Gilbert coaches QBs and two new coaches have been hired to coach WRs, then Landon will coach RBs.

WIDE RECEIVER COACH- JEFF LAPAK- Coach Lapak is currently special teams coach at Syracuse for Dino Babers. Jeff is a native of Belton, Texas and played WR for Baylor under Babers/Briles/Gilbert offense. When Babers left for Eastern Illinois, he took the 6’6 Lapak with him to play TE. All Lapak did was make FCS All-American the year Eastern Illinois went to the quarterfinals. The guy calling the plays that year for EIU was OC Sterlin Gilbert.

WIDE RECEIVER COACH -LANEAR SAMPSON- Coach Sampson is a native of North Mesquite HS and played at Baylor. He is currently WR coach at Missouri State and recruits DFW for Missouri State. I assume Coach Gilbert maybe splitting Flankers and Slot backs into two separate groups.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR-JIM GUSH- Coach Gush is the most experienced guy on the staff with 37 years of coaching experience. Gush has been a LB coach at Iowa State, Kansas State, Baylor, as well as DC at SMU, Stoney Brook, and has been head coach at Garden City CC and Navarro College. Gush coached with Phil Bennett at four of these stops. Phil Bennett was a 4-2-5 coach at most stops, but with the evolution of the spread, has jumped into a 3-4 or Okie 5-2 look on defense. He also has experimented with adding a linebacker in place of a SS to give a 4-3 look.

LINEBACKER COACH– BRODY TRAHAN- Coach Trahan comes to McNeese from Ithica College of New York. His Texas roots are from Dickinson, Texas where he played QB for his father, Warren Trahan. Warren is originally from Lafayette and played at Acadiana HS and Texas A&M. Brody switched to LB at Baylor and was coached by Jim Gush.

SECONDARY COACH-NICK GRAHAM- Coach Graham is from Oklahoma City where he was a prep standout prior to signing with Tulsa. Graham made All-American at Tulsa and was drafted into the NFL by the Philadelphia Eagles where he played for three years. Graham also played in the Canadian Football League before heading back to Tulsa to finish his degree. He has coached DBs at Tulsa and Central Oklahoma.

SECONDARY COACH- CHRIS DISHMAN- Coach Dishman was a well known collegiate defensive back for the Purdue Boilermakers prior to being drafted by the Houston Oilers. Oiler fans will remember the many good years Dishman had in Houston as well as San Diego and other NFL teams. He played a total of 12 years in the NFL and made the Pro Bowl three times. He was coaching at Baylor under Art Briles and with Sterlin Gilbert prior to the Baylor fiasco when all the coaches were dismissed. Dishman has been an intern in the NFL for the Chargers in the minority program. Dishman has been involved with speaking engagements dealing with sexual violence as well as putting on DB clinics around Dallas and Houston with Deon Sanders.

DEFENSIVE LINE COACH- ALEC OSBORNE- Alec is a holdover from the previous staff and is expected to coach defensive ends. I am assuming that Jim Gush will assist with the defensive tackles. Osborne came to McNeese from Northwestern State and played at ULM. He is from Dutchtown High School outside Baton Rouge.

This appears to be the final staff. I will be interested in seeing where the guys are placed in recruiting, but it appears this group will have plenty of ties to Texas as well as Louisiana and Florida. I think it says a lot for Sterlin Gilbert in putting together a diverse staff of backgrounds. Gilbert is in the middle of his career, but he has no problem adding several young coaches who are in the first quarter of their careers. He also added a 53 year old former NFL player to coach the DBs and his defense will be coordinated by a 37 year veteran with 13 years of head coaching experience.
