HA! I had forgotten that one.
Now I will re-tell my favorite Furman Citadel Story. Someone (can't remember his name) used to call me the Sunday before every Furman/Citadel game and call me every purple tinted curse word he could think of (and there were lots of them). There are also schools with football related nicknames that no longer sponsor football. Just about every four-year school that admitted men prior to WWII had a football team. You can see some of the football remnants in today's mascots.
St. Mary's Gaels...name given to fb team by a sportswriter
Detroit Mercy Titans...see St. Mary's.
St. Louis Billikens...fb coach resembled a Billiken doll.
Loyola-Chicago Ramblers...fb team traveled a lot.
Wichita Wheat Shockers...fb players had summer jobs cutting and shocking wheat.
