JMU Seen As I-AA Contender
The Dukes’ football team will try to rebound from a playoff-less season in 2005.

James Madison’s football team started the 2005 season ranked No. 1 in Division I-AA. That won’t happen this year, but the Dukes appear to have achieved "program" status in the sports world’s consciousness.

Even though JMU proved to be a disappointment a year ago, it is among the favorites this season to win the Atlantic 10 and perhaps contend for a second I-AA championship. Whether the Dukes live up to expectations could be pivotal to determining whether they maintain their muscular image.

"Just having a winning record on a consistent basis is the measure that you’re a program, not just a season, not just a team," Delaware coach K.C. Keeler said Wednesday from his Newark, Del., office. "Obviously, winning that national championship sets you apart."
