LAS VEGAS – Wolf Pack athletic director Cary Groth doesn’t have a clear vision of what Nevada’s future conference will look like, but she’s hoping to get a better picture Thursday afternoon.
Groth and the other athletic directors from the Mountain West and Conference USA will meet Thursday in Las Vegas to discuss the future of the newly formed league, which is expected to begin play in 2013-14.
Among the topics expected to be discussed are: (1) whether to stay at the current 16 teams or expand; (2) the name of the league; (3) the potential television opportunities; and (4) how many divisions will be formed within the conference.
“First of all I’d like to see the divisions and how they break down – whether we’re going to have four divisions or two divisions and how it’s going to work,” Groth said during halftime of the Wolf Pack women’s basketball team’s quarterfinal at the Orleans Arena. “There are a lot of models that have been used. I’m anxious to see what we do.”
Groth said she expects most of the conference games to be played within your division, with potential additional games played outside of your division to fill your schedule. Playing within your division will help cut down on travel costs since the newly formed league will stretch over five time zones....
