Interesting story- thanks for sharing.
I love this historical stuff. Sometimes they have reasons for why they picked the colors that they did- or even that they changed them.

I didn't click the link but for The Citadel the police chief in Charleston was named Paddy Miles. He hired a bunch of The Citadel Men for the Charleston Police Dept and those men were known as "Paddy Miles's Bulldogs". When we began playing sports we became The Citadel Bulldogs.

I've never heard that story - I just assumed it was like most other mascot names- it just got picked

Wofford's mascot apparently arose from its baseball team. There was a local Jack Russell Terrier that would go to games and then chase down opposing runners trying to reach home plate.
Over time, the mascot evolved from a Jack Russell to a Boston Terrier.
