From the Chronicle...

Sam Houston State football coach Willie Fritz has a simple theme for his team: Prove it every week.

Boy, did the Bearkats prove themselves this past weekend.

Sam Houston State recorded its largest victory of the season with Saturday's 66-0 thrashing of Lamar in Huntsville. The Bearkats also ran their record to 8-0 and 5-0 in the Southland Conference while extending their winning streak to 10 games dating to last season.

It's their best start since 1964.

Houstonian game preview...

Coming off a seemingly easy win against Lamar, 66-0, the football team prepares to take their perfect record on the road against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions this weekend.

Sam Houston (8-0, 5-0 in SLC) is looking to start the year with nine straight wins, the first time since 1956.

In this week's Sports Network FCS rankings, the Kats were ranked number four and received one first place vote.

SHSU pre-game notes...

For the second time in three weeks, Sam Houston State ventures into the Pelican State as the Bearkats take on Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond at 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

The contest marks the third time in three road games this season that the Bearkats have been their opponent's homecoming game.

Sam Houston State defeated New Mexico 48-45 in overtime and McNeese State 38-14 in their first two away homecoming contests.

While the Kats have won two of their last three games in Louisiana, crossing the Sabine River has not always seen good outcomes for Sam Houston State. The Bearkats stand 25-54-3 in football games in Louisiana.

Sam Houston is 5-2 against Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond. The Lions won 37-21 in the pair's last meeting in Strawberry Stadium. Overall, the Bearkats lead the series 8-4.

Pre-game write-up...

HUNTSVILLE — Closing in on a conference championship, theoretically it would be easy to catch the Bearkats peering ahead to next week’s Southland finale against Northwestern State.

The fourth-ranked Kats aren’t falling for that ploy, though, and look to continue taking care of business today against Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond, La.

With a win over the Lions today, Sam Houston will clinch a share of the Southland title.

Halftime interview with SHSU AD...

(on corners going one-on-one) have a few flashbacks to days as coach. Corners have gotten better since the beginning of season. Making the plays. Haven't seen corner play like that in a long time.

(playoffs) playoffs has changed from 16 to 20. Thanksgiving used to be a bye. 20 teams has created 12 teams not playing Thanksgiving. Will get us to old 16 team format on second weekend on Dec. 3.

(why'd they expand?) Similar to BCS dealing with. Automatic qualifying conferences and other conferences trying to get access. The other leagues were not getting voted in and more opportunities created for everyone in FCS. It is a positive for Div I football. Have everyone with success get in to the playoffs. Playoffs are great system.

(SHSU - bidding/seeds) hurt SHSU in '04 the late loss to NWST and did not allow SHSU a seed, put school in situation looking at revenue producing. Competitive bids at the time.

(On NWST & SHSU in '04) Interesting how that happened. Originally SHSU was going 'east' in discussion and NWST going 'west'. Because we had played Montana during season, it fell that way. We got paired up with Georgia Southern than that changed because that got moved around. We got paired with WKU and it happened that way.

(SHSU bid) SHSU has been working on bid for a few weeks. We're going to put some competitive bids in compared to '01 and '04. Ticket sales, revenues have increased. Solid base to work with and potential that we may not play on Thanksgiving that is positive. Looking at doing best to generate revenue and competitive bid. If we get in situation, good shape head-to-head with everybody.

(pairings) Hard to determine what committee would do. Changed since he was on committee. Tough to predict, would not be fair. It is hard to decipher what they did last year. Back in '04, concerned about as many bus trips to cut down on travel costs. Out west, that is not an issue with Southland and Big Sky because you are going to travel. East, you can get bus trips. Key is to not play in conference, they look at pairings and try to create good match-ups.

(more than one SLC team) hope so. Great for conference. Been unfortunate to be one-bid league last few years. We need that nationally for our conference to get some teams, win some teams. Positive in '04 and '05 was two teams both years and back-to-back semis for league. Helps from strength of schedule. Helps how they view the league. We want what is best for conference, SHSU. Many teams in, helps SHSU, SLC.

(SHSU volleyball) they have had two great wins, beating UTSA who is 1st in league and really proud of volleyball, soccer. Lost in semifinals for soccer losing in penalty kicks. Proud of both teams. Factor in football team, having a good fall.

(UCA/NWST game) Lots of games have been close, back-and-forth shootouts. Exciting time in SLC.

(SHSU dominating) Wild games in shootouts back in late 80s. It has been enjoyable to watch SHSU. Well-coached. Student-athletes are good, good young men. Detail that coaches provide student-athletes is good quality. Focus that team has on Friday night, long trip yesterday, breakfast, pre-game, have not seen that focus too often.

(All business) Very mature group of student-athletes. You can have great coaches and we do, but have to have student-athletes that are mature and special.

(Big game next week) Next week and if we get opportunity at home, this is where our fans, students and everyone - we really need them. We need to kick it up more. I will say on behalf of department, we really appreciate support we have gotten for all of our sports, particularly football.

From what I remembered (If I am correct), Sam Houston COULD have played Montana but there was something about wanting to avoid rematches in the playoffs....As a result, we got Montana (again) while y'all got a team from the east....From what I read (Unless I missed something)....that point seems pretty spot on....

This is actually the 1st time I've posted on this board in like a year (Been busy with relocating and all)....I was just posting the NSU/UCA scores just to keep ya updated (I didn't see any NSU threads and figured it'd be easier to keep it under 1 thread)

SHSU recap...

Hammond, La. - Quarterback Brian Bell passed for 164 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores to lead Sam Houston State to a 38-9 Southland Conference victory over Southeastern Louisiana at Strawberry Stadium Saturday.

Sam Houston (9-0 SLC 6-0) clinched at least a tie for their fourth Southland Conference football championship with the win. Each of the program's first three titles (in 1991, 2001 and 2004) was a co-championship with other league teams (McNeese in 1991 and 2001 and Northwestern State in 2004).

A win over Northwestern State in next Saturday's home finale at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium in Huntsville will give the Bearkats their first undisputed Southland crown in 24 seasons in the league.

The victory extended Sam Houston's winning streak to 11 games (going back to the last two contests of the 2010 season), the longest since the 1955 and 1956 teams set the SHSU school record with 12 consecutive victories. The 9-0 start is also Sam Houston's best since the 1956 team went 10-0.

SLU post-game recap includes mention of SHSU's AQ...

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana senior wide receiver Simmie Yarborough became the Southland Conference's career leader in receptions, but it was not enough as No. 4 Sam Houston State remained unbeaten with a 38-9 win over the Lions in Southland Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lions (2-7, 0-5 Southland) remained winless in Southland play, despite nine catches for 114 yards from Yarborough. The Brookhaven, Miss. native now has 217 catches in his three-plus seasons with the Lions, surpassing the previous league standard of 211 by Sam Houston State's Matt Dominguez, who played for the Bearkats from 1997-2000.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, the Bearkats (9-0, 6-0 Southland) rebounded with 38 unanswered points. The win, coupled with Central Arkansas' 45-20 win at Northwestern State, gives SHSU at least a share of the Southland Conference title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

HAMMOND — This is a memo to any team that plays Sam Houston State: The Bearkats are not good homecoming opponents.

Southeastern Louisiana was the latest team to learn that lesson the hard way this season.

Playing in a game that was moved to earlier in the day, Sam Houston State turned in an efficient, but not stylish 38-9 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at Strawberry Stadium.
