BOONE, N.C. — When I woke up about 7:30 a.m. in my house about 30 minutes from town, I was pleased to see that a rainy night had been replaced by sunshine.

Colors of orange and red from the maple and oak trees enveloping my yard were showing off brilliant tones and it looked like a great day for a football game between two of the biggest rivals in the Football Championship Subdivision, Georgia Southern and Appalachian State.

But like they say up here in the Appalachian Mountains, if you don't like the weather (or, even if you do), wait five minutes and it will change.

About three hours later when I pulled into town, the weather had indeed changed. Snow flurries are falling on Kidd Brewer Stadium on a cold day that will prove challenging for players and fans alike.

It might also put a damper on what was expected to be a record crowd of over 32,000. We will see how hearty the fans from ASU and GSU are on this day.

Game-time temperatures were suppose to be in the low 40s, but then the rain and snow were suppose to have been gone hours ago, too.

Ironically, this is the third straight time that I have visited Kidd Brewer Stadium with snow in the mix. I covered last year's ASU-Western Illinois second-round playoff game where about a foot of snow fell and I attended the ASU-Villanova quarterfinal contest a week later when the Wildcats escaped town with a win and just before another blizzard hit.

Some folks around here think I am somewhat of a weather jinx these days.

Visitors in the press box told me when they left Savannah, GA. on Friday, it was nearly 70 degrees.

Whatever the weather, I am expecting another classic game in what has been an iconic FCS series. Since Georgia Southern and Appalachian State began playing in the I-AA/FCS era, few rivalries have produced such good football.

Georgia Southern just has to be happy that the weather isn't like it was when Erk Russell brought his team up for the modern renewal of the series in 1987.

The two-time national champion Eagles encountered one of the coldest days for football in Kidd Brewer Stadium history, with wind chills hovering near and below zero as the two teams battled snow and ice.

Steam literally billowed off Russell's trademark bald head as he directed his team from the sideline.

The combination of App State's defense and the icy conditions made it almost impossible for Russell's triple option to function that day and ASU ended the Eagles' reign as national champions with a 19-0 quarterfinal-round playoff victory.

A week later, the top-seeded Mountaineers were stunned at home by Marshall 24-10 in the semifinals — a Thundering Herd team that ASU had beaten 17-10 in Huntington, W.V. on its way to its first Southern Conference title.

Marshall dropped a one-point thriller to QB Stan Humphries and Northeast Louisiana (now Louisiana-Monroe) in the NCAA Division I championship game a week after that.

Since 1993, ASU and GSU have done battle as Southern Conference opponents and also on the national scene and the rivalry has only intensified.

Twice, teams have come into this game ranked No. 1 in the country and left as losers (Georgia Southern falling 17-16 in 1999 in Boone and Appalachian State stumbling 21-14 in overtime last year in Statesboro, GA.).

With Georgia Southern undefeated at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the SoCon and ranked No. 1 and facing an ASU squad (5-2, 3-1) that is ranked fifth nationally, the chance of that happening again is one of the draws of this game.

Mr. C.... it's hard to beat the excitement this rivalry has produced in 1994, 1999, 2000, 2001 (the first game), 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010. I just hope the weather allows the teams to play the way they're capable so it is the best game possible.

This is the biggest question mark as far as the weather IMO. Our quarterback and A-backs need to have good traction on the field.

We have had some pretty disappointing offensive performances in wet conditions in the past. Wet conditions are not as much of a boon to this offense as many think.

The only way the weather affects this game is if there is a downpour or a blizzard, and neither are in the forecast. A few snowflakes or a few raindrops aren't going to make one bit of difference either way.

Georgia Southern has won the coin toss and will receive the ball first. It is 39 degrees at kickoff, with 20-mile-per-hour winds and a 29 wind chill factor. The snow flurries have blown through and it is now sunny, though snow clouds are rimming the mountains near the stadium.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:07 PM
GSU will begin play at its own 24 after a Laron Scott return.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:08 PM
Dive play to Robert Brown for a couple of yards. No surprise there.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:09 PM
Option pitch left to Jonathan Bryant for 9 and a first down at the 35.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:09 PM
ASU stuffs Brown again on the dive at the 38. 2nd and 7.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:11 PM
Bad pass by Jaybo Shaw on play action is intercepted by Demetrius McCray at the ASU 37.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:12 PM
First down pass to midfield from Jamal Jackson to Tony Washington.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:12 PM
Jackson just slashed the defense on the read option to the GSU 33 for 17 yards.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:13 PM
ASU is going with a quick tempo to start. Pass complete again to Tony Washington, who is crunched at the 26. 2nd and 3.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:14 PM
Cadet to the 25 on a short run up the gut. 3rd and 2.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:15 PM
The blitz arrives too late for GSU and Jackson hits a WIDE OPEN Andrew Peacock. 6 plays, 63 yards, 2:37 off the clock. Only the second time Georgia Southern has trailed this season (first quarter against Elon). ASU 7, GSU 0, 10:14 left in the first.

It was like he was throwing to ASU on that play. He just threw to a spot on the field.

Nice return by Scott to the GSU 35.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:18 PM
ASU puts the crunch on Brown on the dive. 2nd and 8.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:19 PM
Jaybo goes short side on the option for a first down to the GSU 48. Nice read to where ASU had poor numbers. Shaw again for one to the 49.

Jaybo goes short side on the option for a first down to the GSU 48.

Shaw SLASHED the defense. Oh, its only impressive when App does it? Got it.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:20 PM
Pistol formation. Shaw is forced to keep on the option to the ASU 48. Third and 7.

Shaw SLASHED the defense. Oh, its only impressive when App does it? Got it.
Go somewhere else with that crap. I guess you didn't see where I said he made a smart read. It wasn't a slash. Shaw isn't the same type of runner as Jackson.

This is a place for comments and questions, not baiting and partisanship. We'll give you a fair view of the game. Keep that in mind.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:22 PM
GSU is stopped and All-American Charlie Edwards punts 23 yards to the ASU 23. I think that one got caught in the wind. Edwards is one of the best in the country for strategic placement of punts. 6:54 left in the first quarter.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:27 PM
Sack by Roderick Tinsley for a loss of six. 3rd and 13 upcoming at the 32. Nice play.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:29 PM
Pressure again for GSU and another sack by Tinsley and another Eagle. 4th down at the 30 and time for a Sam Martin punt. Near disaster as the ball hit someone in blocking formation, but GSU gets it back to the GSU 45 on a nifty return by Darreion Robinson.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:30 PM
Pistol formation for GSU and nice pitch to the ASU 43.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:30 PM
Pistol counter option for Shaw to the ASU 42. 2nd and 9.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:31 PM
Pistol off-tackle counter for Brown stopped just inside the 40. Third and a long 6.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:33 PM
Shaw goes back to pass and scrambles to the 36 before Grier makes the tackle. On 4th and 3, Shaw lines up under center looks around and calls time out.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:35 PM
Big sack by ASU to the Mountaineer 43. First down for the Mountaineers as the quarter winds down. Jackson finds room up the middle to the GSU 42 as the quarter ends. ASU 7. GSU 0.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:37 PM

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:38 PM
Cadet is stuffed for a 3-yard loss on first down and Jackson misfires on a pass to Brian Quick on second down.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:39 PM
Great route adjustment by Quick and he holds on for a catch at the GSU 9. First and goal. 36 yards for Quick on the play.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:39 PM
Cadet rushes for 2 up the middle to the 7.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:40 PM
Pass to TE Ben Jorden is broken up at the 3.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:42 PM
Fade route to Quick is well defended. On 4th down, Drew Stewart kicks his first career field goal from 24 yards out. ASU 10, GSU 0 with 13 minutes left in the first half. That was a nice hold for the Eagles when they got pushed back.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:44 PM
Remember that ASU led 14-0 at this juncture last year in Statesboro and Georgia Southern came back to win 21-14 in overtime. It will be interesting the watch the chess match of adjustments as this game goes on. When Paul Johnson was at GSU, I never saw a coach who was better at making adjustments.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:45 PM
A horse collar tackle by Troy Sanders saves a kickoff return TD by Scott on a 78-yard return. Penalty give the Eagles a first and goal at the 10.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:45 PM
Ronald Blair stops Brown for two at the eight. 2nd and goal.

October 29th, 2011, 02:46 PM
Awesome tackle for a loss by Presley.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:47 PM

App holds em to a FG, 10-3 ASU

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:48 PM
Field goal from 22 yards for Mora is good to make it ASU 10, GSU 3 with 10:35 left in the half. That horse-collar tackle by Sanders could prove huge in this game, as it saved four points for ASU and stemmed the momentum.

FCS_pwns_FBS
October 29th, 2011, 02:49 PM
Brilliant...App. commits a horse collar tackle and that saves the TD.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:49 PM
Awesome tackle for a loss by Presley.

Presley was working overtime in practice to learn his position this week. I wondered how he would do against an option attack today.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:51 PM
Brilliant...App. commits a horse collar tackle and that saves the TD.

xrolleyesx

It is odd, but this is the least penalized ASU team I can remember in all my years of covering the Mountaineers. ASU and GSU are usually one-two at the bottom of SoCon penalty stats.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:51 PM
Cadet returns the ball to the 29 to start the ASU offense out.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:52 PM
Nice block by Andrew Peacock springs Cadet for 4 yards on a swing pass to the ASU 33.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:52 PM
Pressure off the edge by GSU forces an incomplete pass from Jackson to Cadet. 3rd and 6.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:54 PM
Two-back set for ASU and an odd, but effective play that looked like a sprint draw to Steven Miller through an open hole to the ASU 43 for a first down.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:55 PM
Trips left for ASU and nice blocking on a bubble screen to Peacock for a first down and 25 yards to the GSU 32. Very well designed play.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:56 PM
Cadet runs to the GSU 29 for 3 yards. 2nd and 7.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:56 PM
Zone read and Cadet bounces out to a hole for 3 more to the GSU 26. 3rd and 4. On third down, Jackson has a pass knocked down.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:58 PM
43-yard field goal attempt for Stewart is struck low and goes just wide left, or maybe under the crossbar. ASU 10, GSU 3 with 7:13 left in the half.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 02:59 PM
Kimbrough reads Jones on the pitch for a 2-yard loss.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:00 PM
Shaw is cut down on a keeper by Lloyd. 3rd and 8 from the 29.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:01 PM
Pass from Shaw to McKinnon in the flat gains nothing. 4th down. That was a wasted play call in my book. Edwards' punt goes out of bounds at the ASU 28 with 5:23 left.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:02 PM
Miller squeezes through a small hole for 3 to the ASU 31. 2nd and 7.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:03 PM
Jackson dumps a screen under pressure to Miller, but a bad spot makes it third down and 4 at the ASU 34.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:03 PM
Jackson scrambles around for a 4-yard loss and its punt time for Sam Martin.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:04 PM
Martin has been hampered by a groin injury all season, but he got a high, hanging punt down to the GSU 32. First down for the Eagles with three minutes left in the half.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:05 PM
Shaw misfires to Zach Walker on a pass.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:06 PM
The option pitch was well set up by the Eagles on second down, but a missed block makes it an 8-yard gain instead of a big play. 3rd and 2 dive for Brown, who is tackled by Sanders for a first down at the GSU 46. Two minutes left.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:07 PM
Shaw got destroyed on a hit just after pitching for a two-yard gain.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:08 PM
Ronald Blair knifed through the line to tackle Shaw for a loss to the GSU 44 on second down. Third and 12 upcoming after a time out for GSU with 1:37 left.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:09 PM
Shaw is taking some punishment on this drive. From the pistol, a play action pass by Shaw is intercepted again by McCray at the ASU 20.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:10 PM
Draw play on second down to the speedy, little Miller for 8 to the 29.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:11 PM
Cadet picks up a first down off-tackle to the ASU 32. 35 seconds left

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:12 PM
Jackson complete to the ASU 44 with 26 seconds left.

Mntneer
October 29th, 2011, 03:12 PM
QUICK TD!!!!!!!

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:12 PM
And Brian Quick strikes. Jackson hits Quick behind the secondary for 56 yards and a TD with 16.7 seconds left.

FCS_pwns_FBS

Why on EARTH did we have Quick in 1-on-1 coverage in that play? WTF?

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:15 PM
The PAT makes it ASU 17, GSU 3. ASU converts its second interception off Shaw into a TD.

Quick goes over the 3,000-yard mark for his career. Rick Beasley is the other one to do that.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:17 PM

There was a safety over the top (at least from what I saw), but he didn't get there in time. Keep in mind that Quick is the most talented athlete in FCS in all likelihood. Someone with NFL connections told me today that one team has him listed as a late first-round draft choice right now, if Quick runs well in the combine and pro days.

Mr. C
October 29th, 2011, 03:22 PM
Halftime stats:

ASU 247 yards, 66 rushing, 181 passing. Jackson is 10-of-16 for 181 and 2 TDs. Quick has 3 catches for 104 yards and the 56-yard TD.

GSU 69 yards, 62 rushing and 7 passing. Shaw is 2-of-5 with two interceptions. The big play for Scott was a 78-yard kickoff return. Scott has 134 yards of return yardage.

This one is a done deal. GSU's o-line and slots are just getting whipped. Mental mistakes and missed blocks are killing GSU.

App came out today with a purpose and is playing with their hair on fire. GSU didn't and is getting whipped.

No way GSU is #1 or even top 50 with this kind of efort and execution... very, very poor. Appie, on the other hand appears to be peaking as we head into November.

Props to App for being better than us all around. You clogged the middle and we continued to run into the middle. You had the perimeter covered and when we ran that way we used plays that took so long to develop they were swallowed up before anything could happen. We were horrible passing the ball. Our offensive play calling didn't help us at all, but App shut us down more effectively than anyone else this year. We definitely did not play to our potential however, and I hope we see a rematch.
