View Full Version : Richmond at Towson, Mr. C's Game Thread

Mr. C

TOWSON, MD. — Certain games stand like signposts in the evolution of a rebuilding football program and if any game fits that bill as we move towards the middle of the 2011 FCS season, it is Towson's encounter tonight at Johnny Unitas Stadium against Richmond in CAA play.

A win tonight would improve the Tigers (3-1 overall, with the lone loss coming in a competitive game against BCS Maryland) to 2-0 in the CAA and would show the rest of the league that Towson is a serious contender in this always tough league.

Richmond (3-2, 0-2), meanwhile, is trying to find itself after a pair of losses in league (New Hampshire and James Madison) after wins over Duke, Wagner and VMI.

This should be a fun game in a fun atmosphere.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 06:46 PM
Towson won the opening coin for the fifth straight week and deferred possession until the second half. Richmond QB Aaron Corp was sharp in moving the ball into Towson territory. But a Tre Gray completion from Corp at the 28 ended the drive in a turnover on a fumble forced by Nick Oates and recovered by Danzel White. It was a similar start to the Villanova game I watched here a few weeks ago — a game won by Towson 31-10.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 06:46 PM
The Tigers have been mixing it up behind the field generalship of QB Grant Enders and have a second and short at the UR 23.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 06:49 PM
A great lead block by FB Tyler Wharton allowed Dominique Booker to earn a first down at the 19 and Enders hit James Oboh for a first and goal at the 3.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 06:50 PM
Terrance West powered over for his sixth TD of the season from the three to give Towson the lead at 7-0 with 6:12 left in the first period. The drive was 10 plays, 72 yards and took 4:54 off the clock.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 06:52 PM
This is the first time that Richmond hasn't scored first in a game this season and are the first points allowed by the Spiders in the first period.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 06:58 PM
It doesn't take long to see why Aaron Corp was a one-time quarterback at that QB factory known as USC. He just completed a beautiful pass on play action to TE Kevin Finney. The Spiders are in Towson territory with a third and six at the 45.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 06:59 PM
Kendall Gaskins finally got going on a stretch play for 13 yards and a first down for the Spiders at the Towson 26.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:00 PM
UR is facing a third and a half-yard at the 17. Key play here.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:01 PM
Richmond inexplicably got called for delay of game.

October 8th, 2011, 07:02 PM
Nice to see Towson get on the board! this should be a doozy

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:04 PM
Corp's third and six pass was short of the first down to Finney, who should have run a deeper route. Fourth and three with Will Kamin on for a field goal from 36 that kissed off the right upright and went through. The drive was 11 plays, 61 yards and took 6:02 off the clock. There are 10 seconds left in a very quick first period.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:05 PM
Nice to see Towson get on the board! this should be a doozy

The Tigers ran the ball extremely well on their first possession. Impressive work from the offensive line. But Richmond came right back to cut the lead to 7-3. A fumble and a delay of game penalty have hurt the Spiders thus far.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:07 PM
Towson was one tackle away from a kickoff return for a TD, but a block in the back will set the Tigers back to the 16 on the final play of the quarter. Tremayne Graham of Richmond nearly picked off a pass near midfield, but dropped it.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:11 PM
Richmond forced a three and out.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:12 PM
The Spiders have the ball at the UR 44 after a fair catch of the punt.

JMUNJ08
October 8th, 2011, 07:15 PM
Is the game on anywhere???

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:16 PM
Corp ran out of pressure to his left and found Stephen Barnette for 20 nifty yards. Barnette was drilled by Jordan Dangerfield.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:16 PM
Is the game on anywhere???

There is a feed from the scoreboard, but I don't have a link. Maybe someone else knows.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:18 PM
Towson's defense has toughened up in the red zone again. Will Kamin is on for a 26-yard field goal, which he doesn't hit solidly and sends wide left. UR is shooting itself in the foot. It is Towson still leading 7-3 with 10 minutes left in the second quarter.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:20 PM
Aaron Corp has 15 consecutive completions to start the game, over halfway to the NCAA all-division record of 28 by Richie Williams of Appalachian State, set against Furman at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone in 2004. I was there to witness that record.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:25 PM
Towson has a fourth and two from the UR 43 upcoming.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:25 PM
Terrance West got a great block from left tackle Eric Pike and others to pick up the first down at the Spider 36.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:27 PM
Terrance West churns through the defense for another first down at the UR 22.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:28 PM
Booker gets a lead block from QB Grant Enders to go for 13 to a first and goal at the 9.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:30 PM
West continues to impress with another TD run from the 4, his second of the game, to make it 14-3 Towson with 3:48 left in the half. The drive went 13 plays, 80 yards and took 6:15 off the clock.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:31 PM
Nice return by Wayne Pettus for 32 yards to the UR 40 on the kickoff.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:34 PM
Corp's string ends when a ball hits LB Danzel White in the back with a pass he was trying to fit into a small window.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:36 PM
A pretty hook-up between Corp and Gray goes for 33 yards to the Towson 6.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:39 PM
Ben Edwards misfired on a reverse pass, but Kendall Gaskins scored on a run. Gaskins has scored in every game this season and has eight TDs for the year. Those were the first second-quarter points allowed this year by Towson. Seven plays, 62 yards and a little over two minutes on that drive. Kamin's kick makes it 14-10 Towson with 1:08 left in the half.

Tribal
October 8th, 2011, 07:41 PM
14-10 Towson?

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:44 PM
Richmond had a bust coverage that allowed Alex Blake to get a 31-yard reception from Ender at the UR 22 with 18 seconds left.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:44 PM
14-10 Towson?

Yes. And soon to be more as Towson is on the UR 13 with 11 seconds left.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:45 PM
What happened in Delaware tonight, Tribal?

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 07:48 PM
Towson made a mistake with a pitch to Booker, who reversed field a couple of times and went out of bounds with TWO seconds on the clock. But the CAA official totally screwed up and didn't signal in time.

Our O is terrible. Period. 21-0 UD

I was just asked about the Tribe on the local radio halftime show and I wondered how a team with Jonathan Grimes at TB and with Gottlieb at TE could not score points. Those are two of the top players in the country and both are NFL prospects. I never thought I'd see a W&M team struggle so much at QB.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:01 PM
Would anybody have thought before the season that a Maine at Towson showdown in November could be for all of the CAA marbles?

Tribal
October 8th, 2011, 08:04 PM
Good for Maine and Towson. Just goes to show that any CAA team can play well any year. Towson needed 5OTs to beat a terrible Coastal Carolina team last year to earn their lone win. Now, they're a top team in the CAA.

My thoughts exactly. In fact, they should help take pressure off the QB. I'm shocked Gottlieb hasn't been a bigger part of the game, with our QB and receivers struggling. I guess a topic for another thread..

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:09 PM
The second half is underway with Towson taking over at the 27. This is a huge drive for the Richmond defense.

Gaskins powered for a first and goal at the eight.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:20 PM
Gaskins on the stretch play to the five. Second and goal.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:21 PM
Another stretch play for Gaskins to the one. Third down.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:23 PM
Kenton Powell reads the stretch play from the power I on third down and stops Gaskins for a five-yard loss. I was expecting a bootleg pass there. Will Kamin hits a 23-yard field goal to make it Towson 14, Richmond 13. The drive went 16 plays, 70 yards and took 8:26 off the clock. That was Richmond's longest drive of the season in terms of plays and time.

Laycock has a great record of developing QB's. However, not all Qb's can play in Laycock's system. I think this is the case with Paulus. Paulus appears to have the physical tools to be a QB at this level. But to be successful for the Tribe, Paulus needs to be more accurate and his decision making is very suspect.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:27 PM
Towson picked up 15 yards on a pass from Ender to Leon Kinnard on first down to the Tiger 47 and another hook-up between the two gave the Tigers another first down on an 11-yard connection to the Spider 42.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:28 PM
West reversed field on a quick pitch and went for 23 yards and a first down at the Richmond 18.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:28 PM
West banged off-tackle for five to the 13 on first down.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:29 PM
Enders has chosen the right times to keep the ball tonight and he went for eight yards to give the Tigers first and goal at the UR five.

Mr. C
October 8th, 2011, 08:30 PM
With one minute left in the third quarter, Richmond has called time out to reset its defense against the hurry-up attack of Towson.

I still believe Paulus is not completely healthy. He did just fine last season for the Tribe before getting hurt.

Mr. C

A one-on-one tackle by strong safety Colin Pehanick saved a TD.

Really happy for the Towson guys and especially andy7171. Tough loss for my Spider friends though.

Richmond put tremendous pressure on the kick, but Soven was clutch. First game-winner for Soven in his college career, the ninth game-winning field goal at the finish line in Towson history.

I'd pick Maine and Towson ahead of New Hampshire at this point. Both of them play better defense.

HEY WE WON TOO!

JMU/Delware Tied for 4th to me both at 4-2 with some good wins...I just think:
- Maine looks great
- Towson just can't lose...
- UNH has a great O even if the D does not exist

I'd pick Maine and Towson ahead of New Hampshire at this point. Both of them play better defense.

Let's not get carried away yet. UNH & Towson both beat Richmond, but Towson beat them at home, UNH beat them on the road. Towson beat Villanova by 21, UNH beat them by 30. Towson beat Colgate (42-17) and UNH beat Holy Cross who beat Colgate (37-7). Towson beat 3-3 Morgan State and UNH beat 5-1 Lehigh. So I'd say even with a porous defense (that has been improving over the last two weeks) UNH still holds the edge. I guess we'll know in a few weeks.

But if you score more points than the other team, you win. This is the best team Towson has beat. Maine is fine, but I'm not ready to rank Towson above #20.

At 4-1 and 2-0 in the CAA, I seem to be more impressed than you. Yes, the wins could be a bit better but looking at the landscape, I was hard pressed not to see a bunch of 2 or 3 loss teams that I was comparing them to....I am on the bandwagon and will save you a seat.

BTW...just did my ballot and Towson is residing just outside the top 10...with only UNH and Maine ahead from a CAA standpoint...

Not often you can lose a game without punting...

I hope we get some of our now 4 injured Dlinemen back during the bye week before the home game against Maine. We'll need all the help we can get against them.

Agreed. I'm just hoping Montana's AD is in touch with Maine's - would LOVE to see the Battle of the Bears renewed!

And grats to the Tigers - would you guys get some fans on here too???

What is it with Towson and the deafening music? When my wife and I drove up two years ago, it was so frigging loud for the hour before the game that we asked to be able to leave and come back, and were finally allowed to do so after kicking up a stink. Unfortunately, we forgot about it, and this year it was WORSE. I saw people everywhere with their fingers in their ears and a mother actually covering her baby girl's ears. And this goes on and on and on for the whole pre-game, and then for the deafening 'protect this house' third-downs, etc, etc. I'm not some get-off-my-lawn old fart, I work with kids and can listen to their music just fine - but the stadium experience at Towson for anyone over 25 is simply terrible. No wonder they don't draw flies. Doesn't anyone from the athletic department talk to any fans?

The loudness is a constant problem at the stadium. Not sure why they keep turning it up. It's worse during lacrosse season, if you can imagine that.
