Can't find a video link, unfortunately. Watching it locally. So far, both quarterbacks are a bit out of synch, though the Griz's opening drive was smooth. Eastern looked pretty bad their first couple of drives, but Mitchell looks like he's getting some rhythm.

Monmouth up 3-0 at half. Villanova switched quarterbacks and they have started to look like an offense. Monmouth got lucky as hell. Jose Gumbs forces fumble on a 49 yard catch and run at the MU 2. Nova recovered but refs ruled that it was out of endzone. It was really, really close and refs were not in position. From the Nova feed, I thought it should have been a TD but I'll take it.

Montana ball just across mid field at the 46. Eastern has failed to convert two fourth down attempts for the game (including at the goal line towards the end of the second half), and Mitchell is having an off-day (18-34; no TD; 1 int); still, Jordan Talley has already rushed for over a hundred for the Eagles.

A bit harsh for one call - but if you watch the highlights, both teams have done a lot to earn a loss. EWU's had several weird fourth down calls, and both teams have had some very badly times penalties. (Officiating seems to be pretty fair - I haven't seen any calls I really disagree with on either side, though some of the ball spots (for both teams) have been odd - still not sure how EWU didn't get into the end zone toward the end of the second quarter.

Regardless: Montana's D comes up, getting a stop and a sack, forcing EWU to punt the ball, which takes a good Griz bounce into the endzone. Griz ball, 5:40 to go, still clinging to that three point lead.

That seems right. Montana went to the ground early and often (over 300 yards total), and Johnson had over a hundred yards rushing. Nguyen and Canada both did a great job of getting extra yards after contact, and Montana's pace with the ball was pretty relentless. Eastern also did a great job of limiting us deep, and sniffed out screens. There were also a few laterals for runs which wouldn't show up so it didn't look quite as boring as that stat would show.

VMI with boneheaded turnovers, and UR can't run the ball to save our lives. One score was a blocked punt returned for a TD.

Run game was working, 316 yards. I think the coaches were trying to keep the ball out of Mitchell's hands and at 6.6 yards per carry they didn't call many passes except short swing and screens. Thus the 1.8 average pass play.

Montana State has an awful time winning in Cheney. Look for a desperate EWU to knock them off next weekend.

Less than 10 years ago WKU was winning the National Championship, and a perennial contender. They move up to FBS and are worse than most FCS teams.

This would be a upset, but these two teams are trending in different directions. ISU is on the way up and WKU just keeps going deeper in the cellar than the year before.

Damn, and I had Morehead State at # 5! (Just kidding, of course).

WIU 0
Missouri 69 (and well into their third string, just had a punt return for a touchdown on special teams)

Total yards: WIU 29. Missouri, 741. There really should be a mercy rule.

Great win for the Mustangs. In other Great West (and Big Sky) news:

Sacramento State 3
Weber State 28
Seven and a half left in the third. And Sac State continues to be an enigma for me.

Weber State with 6 votes in the TSN poll is thumping #20 Sac. State 28 - 3 in the 3rd quarter. Yuk, puke. Talk about darts. That poll is way off this early.

ODU defeats Hampton 45-42 in a crazy game. Hampton had a fumble return for a TD, ODU blocked a punt for a TD.

On Cal Poly's big win over SDSU, the stats show the game was much closer than the 34 point spread:

Total yards:
Cal Poly:522
SDSU: 445

Turnovers:
Cal Poly: 0
SDSU: 3

Absent the turnovers, this might have been a much more competitive game. Still, -3 in turnover margin on the road will always hurt.

I had Weber State and Sac State ranked after their week 1 showings vs. FBS, and dropped both after their week 2 losses. Weber might make it back in though now.

Ive been judging the Sioux by their first game with Drake and did not expect a close game. UND has either improved immensely, or Fresno is stinking bad. Darell, I think UND has improved. Congratulations for a great game.
