Cowboys conclude first week of August camp
Team is in good physical shape
Louis Bonnette-McNeese SID
8/7/2011 7:47:00 PM

McNeese State concluded its first week of August camp with a Sunday afternoon workout in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets (shell).
Jim Murphy, now in his 31st year as the team's athletic trainer, said that he has been pleased with the physical fitness of the players, noting that it takes between 10 and 13 days to get acclimated to the type of hot and humid temperatures the team has had to practice in.
“We're making sure that they are getting plenty of water breaks, have iced towels for them and we've added electrolyte drinks,” he said.
Murphy said that they also have ice baths for them if need be after workouts and that "the heat index has been 104 to 105 degrees out there.”

Usually mid 80's in August in the Lehigh Valley. You can bank on a few 90 degree, humid, miserable days.

We practice from 6 AM to 8:30 AM so raw temps have been in the upper 70's, low 80's during our practices so far...heat indices have been mid 80s to mid 90s...afternoon temps have been mid-upper 90's with heat indices in the 110+ range.

Mid 90's during the week. Probably was in the upper 80's this morning when they were on the field at 6AM. Last year they got run off the field one day when it was 99 degrees, heat index 115+, and field surface temp over 240. Last year they started out practicing 8-10AM, but after that practice they started going at 6AM. It sucks for everyone involved, but it's the best thing to do in that situation. And yes, ice baths are definitely in style after practice. In years past, we'd have to go to the gas station to get enough ice each practice..They have eliminated that for the most part now by adding an additional athletic training facility with a LARGE ice machine..

It has been over 100 several times in Statesboro. Georgia Southern uses the Hot Heads system to keep the players safe.

highs around 90 this week on the Main line this week with humidity from 50-60% bring the real feel close to 100. Humidity was over 75% this afternoon though

Mocs have been practicing at 6:30am to try and avoid the heat of the day (Chattanooga set back to back records on Thursday and Friday...both over 100 degrees...with a heat index of 105-110).

Just about everyone is suffering this summer. It's not the heat, it's the humility. :)

With heat indexes easily over 100 in Cedar Falls last Saturday all of the younger players were making comments about the heat, those comments were quickly answered with screams from veterans of "We play in Texas in a month!," "you better F***ing get used to it!"

I've been to a couple of UCA practices. Actual temp outside was 109 and the Heat Index was between 115 and 120. Funny thing is I kinda got used to it. Sucks for the players in helmets running on that turf, but the fans don't mind watching in the shade. LOL

That's our home field advantage! Only sissies play in domes (and those who have ridiculous snowstorms) The average high for September 10th in Nacogdoches is 90 degrees with a record of 100. Better bring your shorts.

Sorry to give you insight that our veteran players respect your program enough to circle your name on the schedule. An honor that two teams a year get (SIU and whomever the BCS team is we play). I won't do it again. It is only going to be in the 70's today. Maybe we should go into our sissy dome and crank up the heat so we are ready to play the mighty power house that is SFA. Maybe we can cough up the ball 8 times this year and you guys can have a chance to squeek out a victory by less than a td again this year. I bet you had fun watching football last year in November when it was relevant to the fighting stone colds. Hope you enjoyed it while it lasted.
