Best of luck to the defending champion Colonels from Nicholls St as they get things underway. Should be an interesting year for Nicholls St this year. I think we're all interested in seeing what happens with Yale Vannoy no longer the QB in their offense and what their season shapes up to after a very successful 5-1 campaign in SLC play last year...

THIBODAUX -- The Nicholls Colonels will begin spring football practice Monday afternoon at the Nicholls Practice Fields.

Nicholls’ football squad will also practice Wednesday and Friday, and spring drills will continue through April 6 when the Colonels hold the annual Spring Game at 7 p.m. at John L. Guidry Stadium.

The Colonels finished 6-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play last season to claim their first-ever Southland Conference Championship. The Colonels were eliminated by Furman, 14-12, in the first round of the Division I-AA playoffs.

Third-year head coach Jay Thomas is hoping to slow practice down and review fundamentals this spring. “The spring is a good opportunity for us to evaluate a lot of our younger players,” said Thomas. “The teaching process is a lot slower for these guys, and we basically spoon feed them with new techniques on offense and defense.”

The Colonels will need to replace five starters on offense and seven starters on defense, and Thomas is hoping to use the spring to evaluate the key positions that will need to be filled.
