View Full Version : OL FU's Best of Playoffs 2010

Yeah, so I heard the call in the other thread and spent a couple of hours reworking the spreadsheet last night. xrotatehx I think this is the 4th or 5th year I've been in charge of the information originally completed by OL FU.

It's not a perfect representation, but we think it gives a pretty clear indication of the top teams in the subdivision based on how well they do in the playoffs.

The numbers of teams, rounds and bye weeks skew the numbers a bit, but I tried to keep the amount of points consistent throughout.

A first round game is worth 5 points.
A second round game is worth 10 points.
A quarterfinal game is worth 15 points.
A semifinal game is worth 20 points.
A championship game is worth 25 points.
Winning the championship game is worth an additional 25 points.

The totals that could be earned throughout the years are as follows:

1978 - 1980: Semis/Finals (4 Teams) - 70 Points
1981 - Quarters/Semis/Finals (8 Teams) - 85 Points
1982 - 1985: First/Quarters/Semis/Finals (12 Teams) - 95 Points
1986 - 2009: First/Quarters/Semis/Finals (16 Teams) - 95 Points
2010 - Present: First/Second/Quarters/Semis/Finals (20 Teams) - 100 Points

A total of 64 current FCS teams have participated in the playoffs. There are 21 former playoff teams (including Texas State and UMass this year) from either moving up or the discontinuation of the football program.

I have 9 worksheets worth of data to post so I'd appreciate if comments are held until I have everything done. :)

My pleasure. It's like Saint3333 has always said, Appalachian has historically been a Top 10 FCS team. The three national titles simply vaulted App into the Top 5 (or in this case Top 3).

If you take away all the points from the three title runs ASU would still finish 9th all-time.

Great work and very interesting to look at. I know it's impossible to include every factor, but I wonder if it might be possible to factor in/out the years that some teams were not yet participating. Another interesting point: Since you went back to 1980, I think it's fair to point out that Cal Poly beat Boise State that year even though Cal Poly was DII. Boise went on to win the D1AA national championship and Cal Poly won the DII national championship. Is this worth points using your system? Not complaining. Just curious.

It's just about what teams have done as FCS members I'm pretty sure bojeta. That is impressive though.

The spreadsheet is already getting pretty unwieldy with the amount of data I'm managing across multiple worksheets so I don't think I'll start factoring lots of other variables. That would include adding points for things done in a different division.

One thing I did though was to take the total points for each team and divide them by the number of playoff appearances to get an average per playoff run. I removed teams with less than three appearances (an arbitrary pick). That means Cal Poly ain't on this list for now. :p What I got was 44 of 64 teams having more than three appearances.

Fair enough. It will be nice to be in an auto qualifying conference next year. Cal Poly has been ranked in the top 16 a couple of times, won their conference and yet not been selected for the playoffs due to a lack of auto bid for the Great West. Your spreadsheet should get more interesting as the years pass. Keep up the great work!

Wofford does mightily well considering we've only been around 14 years in the SoCon. We're tied for 25th all time, and 11th in the last 5 years. Considering there are lots of teams ahead of us whose star is fading/long faded, I'll take it. Now all we need is a title

Pretty amazing to look at those numbers and to realize that over half the teams listed have won straight out of the gate...and not been back.

As for Montana...2 out of 7 makes them the Atlanta Braves/Buffalo Bills of FCS. ;)

(But hey, I wish Chattanooga's biggest problem was that we had only won 2 titles in 7 tries...life could be much worse...and I can't make fun on Montana, my aunt and uncle are Griz season ticket holders)
