Eastern Washington Claims No. 1 as Regular Season Ends

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Eastern Washington Eagles claimed the No. 1 ranking in the 2010 Football Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll for the first time this season. In the final poll before the FCS playoffs begin, the Eagles capitalized on three losses by the previous top four teams to claim the top spot.

The Eagles (9-2) claimed 13 first-place votes and 660 total points to jump two spots to No. 1. Eastern Washington finished the regular season with 34-7 home win against Idaho State to move to 7-1 in the Big Sky Conference, tying the Eagles for first with Montana State.

Stephen F. Austin received one first-place vote and finished one point ahead of Appalachian State to end the regular season at No. 2. The Lumberjacks, who received 617 total points, beat Northwestern State, 36-13, to finish 6-1 in the Southland Conference.

Appalachian State, which spent most of the season at the top of the poll, finished the regular season at No. 3. Even though the Mountaineers received 12 first-place votes, they only garnered 616 total points after finishing the season with a road loss to FBS Florida.

Round out the top five are William & Mary at No. 4 and Delaware at No. 5. Both teams finished 6-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, with the Tribe claiming the league’s automatic berth to the FCS playoffs by virtue of the head-to-head win over the Blue Hens, 17-16, back on Oct. 23.

Wofford and Montana State each move up one spot this week to No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, while Southeast Missouri State jumped two spots to No. 8. Receiving the final first-place vote was Jacksonville State, who came in at No. 9. Completing the top ten this week was New Hampshire from the CAA.

Georgia Southern (No. 22) and Western Illinois (No. 24) are new to this week’s poll, while Richmond and Massachusetts drop out of the rankings.

The thirteen conferences that are represented in this week’s poll is led by the Colonial Athletic Association with four ranked teams. The Big Sky, Missouri Valley and Southern Conferences all have three ranked teams, while the Pioneer League and the Mid-Eastern Athletic and Ohio Valley Conferences have two representatives each. The Ivy and Patriot League, and the Big South, Great West, Southland and the Southwest Athletic Conferences each have one team in this week’s poll.

FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.
