Would you be fine with your team putting a 3 or 4 inch cicle Coca-Cola logo on the teams hip for a 500,000 dollars a year?

Don't think this would ever happen at the I-AA level but I think I would probably give them the nod...

no way.

Would rather play @ a I-A for $500,000 a year.

I dont think i would mind it. If it could in any way help pay for better facilities or scholarships (if your league allows them) then where is the harm in that.

If given the opportunity, why not do both?

I'd rather see something specific to the area, if possible, rather than Coke. Whatever the area/region are known for. Like this:

Don't be so quick. Certain I-AA teams could make money on this. Obviously, You have never seen the 6 or 8 MBNA tents surrounding the TUB trying to get people to sign up for credit cards (MBNA were the champs at affinity card marketing). All of the Ivies some of the HBCU's and about 5 or 6 of the High attendance I-AA's could make a deal. The Key is how LOYAL are patrons of the college? I see Montana, Delaware, Grambling, Southern, GSU, ASU and the Ivies as prime marketing targets.

I know that this is a hypothetical question, but would the NCAA even allow teams to pursue such sponsorship? Does anyone know if there are uniform restrictions?

Obviously, ads at college games are okay - scoreboards and that table in basketball where players check in to the game have ads. but on unis?

I would hate it even if it were given that deal. The seperation from commercialism is one of the things I love most about I-AA football. It isn't all about the money, just the sport.

Look at Clay's right shoulder, you can see JSU as already sold out to Addidas.

I don't know if that counts. That is just the brand of jersey they use. It's like saying the team sold out since their shoes have the Nike Swoosh on them.

Then Coke or someone else could just start a jersey line of clothing or shoe brand to get around any sponsorship issues.

I'm not liking the idea, unless of course we have:

The Great West Conference sponsored by Petco

As someone who first love is cycling, I say "Bring it on". Have you seen the pro teams uniforms? They are moving billboards.

Bobby Knight used to (still does?) wear a O'Reilly Auto Parts logo when he coaches, as long as it is small, tasteful and brings in cash it wouldn't bother me

I'm reminded of Rocky Balboa's robe in the original movie with the meat packing ad on the back. Yo, Paulie.... :D

Still does, and the O'Reilly logo is even on the floor at the United Spirit Areana.

Pretty much all Pro-soccer teams in Europe have tasteful commercials on their shirts that usually complement the team's colors and jersey design. I mean, I can't imagine an AC Milan shirt without the Opel in front, or Ajax without ABN Amro, Man United without Vodafone.

Cycling and international soccer fans have a point here, not to mention rugby fans.

Maybe sponsorship would be OK, but is the collegiate level the best place for it? Do college cyclists and soccer players wear ads on their shirts? I remember App State's cyclists had the logo of a local cycle shop on their jerseys, but that was basically a club sport.

I'm not for it at the collegiate level.

Call me slightly old fashioned, but I think that:

-it distracts from the uniform
-it further ruins the 'amatuer' image
-it ties products to teams regardless of how the individual player/coach/fan might feel about the product (i.e. not use/be against or opposed to)
-it frankly looks and feels tacky

OK, you're slightly old fashioned, but you are also 100% correct.

I think schools have to rethink how they make and raise money to sustain themselves..
It's a common theme across the country where less and less state money makes it to public universities leaving schools to work harder and harder to generate revenue...

I don't like the idea of ads on uniforms or on the playing field except maybe the national championship game. Many schools have figured out ways to sell advertising within their stadium in a suttle way where it doesn't detract from the game..

In addition schools have to rethink how their booster clubs work to raise money and do it better.. Here at Mcneese some major changes are coming in that area and are long overdue considering the lack of money coming in to such a successful program in city and area of 200,000..

The HBCU's continue to do classics in big urban markets to make ends meet, which unfortunately is the only thing keeping them afloat, thus it tells you a lot about the true support they get at home games and through donations..

Luckily here at mcneese we are usually on the plus side of revenue, except for this past season, which because of the hurricane put us 600,000 in the red.. Despite that, i believe 90% of season ticket buyers donated their offered refund for the missed home games back to the university, which allowed us to cut the defecit by 500,000 roughly...

Anyway, i hope I-AA and it's teams are not too quick to sell out just for a few bucks... Remember as long as your on the plus side and playing for a true national championship, then your doing what it's all about!
