1. QB DeAndre Presley, Appalachian State, Jr.- 127-199, 1663 yds, 15 TD, 1 INT, 63.8%, 157.9 pass eff., 207.9 yds/gm, 100 carries, 644 yds, 6.4ypc, 10 TD in 8 games.
Presley doesn’t have as strong of a hold on the number one spot as he hasn’t been as sharp and even threw his first interception of the season this week. However, he still has an impressive ratio and leads the number one team in the nation.

2. RB Taiwan Jones, Eastern Washington, Jr.- 134 carries, 1078 yds, 10 TD, 8.0ypc, 134.8 yds/gm, 16 catches, 290 yds, 18.1ypc, 2 TD, 3 PR, 28 yds, 9.3avg, 11 KR, 224 yds, 20.4avg in 8 games.
While Jones doesn’t leave the nation in rushing and he has missed time due to injury, he has shown the last two weeks that he is the most explosive player in FCS. His speed, versatility, and big play ability make him likely to finish as high as number two if he keeps this up and I project he will so therefore I moved him up.

3. QB Matt Barr, Western Illinois, Sr.- 164-262, 2438 yds, 23 TD, 3 INT, 62.6%, 167.4 pass eff., 270.9 yds/gm, 72 carries, 398 yds, 5.5ypc, 5 TD in 9 games.
Barr has WIU ranked and looking good to get in the playoffs at this point and is coming off a gaudy performance. His 23-3 ratio, 167.4 pass efficiency rating, and 28 total touchdowns make him a good looking top three vote getter.

4. QB Jeremy Moses, Stephen F. Austin, Sr.- 232-371, 2618 yds, 23 TD, 3 INT, 62.5%, 140.7 pass eff., 327.2 yds/gm, 11 carries, -60 yds in 8 games.
With their loss this past week Moses is not looking as attractive as he has been. He is below Barr in both pass efficiency and total touchdowns while his completion percentage is lower as well. He should still finish in the top five but is no longer a lock to finish in the top three and there is a good chance he won’t, if Barr keeps up his recent play.

5. RB Nate Eachus, Colgate, Jr.- 235 carries, 1295 yds, 14 TD, 5.5ypc, 161.9 yds/gm, 12 catches, 115 yds, 9.6ypc in 8 games.
Eachus leads the nation in rushing and we all know how the nation’s leading rusher is likely to finish in the top five. His 5.5 yards per carry and 14 touchdowns land him fifth on my ballot as of today.

My thoughts:

The only reason Scott Riddle fell out of the top five is the injury but it would still not surprise me to see him finish in the top five because of his career achievements. Coleman was dropped after throwing five interceptions and potentially killing their chances at a playoff berth. Mike Brown leads the nation in total offense while Josh McGregor leads the nation in pass efficiency and have become definite names on the short list of preseason front runners for next year.

MY TOP 5

There is a lot of movement in my projected top five this week.

1. DT Kenrick Ellis, Hampton, Sr.- 72 TT, 12 TFL, 2 sacks, 4 QBH, 2 FR, 1 FF in 7 games.
Ellis moves into the top spot as he continues to dominate week in and week out. His numbers would be even more impressive had he not missed their first game. Ellis is a monster and is no doubt having the biggest impact on a defense of any player in the nation. With nobody pulling away from the rest of the pack as there has been in previous years it is still wide open.

2. LB J.C. Sherritt, Eastern Washington, Sr.- 106 TT, 9 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 INT, 3 PBU, 2 QBH in 9 games.
Sherritt’s numbers aren’t gaudy like last year but he is eighth nationally in total tackles (106). He has played well and is the top player on their defense. Still, his reputation should see him finish no worse than third or fourth if he plays well and could still win it.

3. DE Ameet Pall, Wofford, Jr.- 37 TT, 16.5 TFL, 10.5 sacks, 6 QBH, 1 FR, 1 FF in 8 games.
Pall is having a great season leading a Wofford team that has risen from unranked all the way into the top 10 and has become a sleeper national title contender. He is second nationally in sacks (10.5) and fourth in tackles for loss (16.5). If Wofford upsets App State and he stays at or near the top of the national rankings he should become an attractive vote getter.

4. LB Tyler Holmes, UMASS, Jr.- 85 TT, 11 TFL, 4 sacks, 3 INT, 1 PBU, 2 FF in 8 games.
Holmes leads a sold UMASS defense who has played pretty well outside of the debacle against UNH. He is a fast, explosive player who makes plays in both the running and pass game. He is barely holding on though as several players are making a push for the top five.

5. DE Jabari Fletcher, Appalachian State, Sr.- 40 TT, 11.5 TFL, 7 sacks, 1 INT, 3 PBU, 8 QBH, 3 FR/returned one for TD, 1 FF in 8 games.
While LeGree is their best NFL prospect and the only two-time first-team All-American Fletcher has had the biggest impact of late with back to back player of the week awards from the SoCon and rumbling 40 yards for a touchdown to help seal their win over Furman on Saturday. He is becoming a legit candidate to finish in the top three if he keeps up his recent play.

My thoughts:

There is still a lot that can happen with the Buchanan Award and it should be very interesting to see who pulls away at the end, if anyone does. It would not be surprising to see no definite front runner going into the voting as we have had in the last few years. Pough, Charles, and Glazier move into the top 20 as Pough leads the nation in tackles for loss, Charles is the most consistent for SFA, and Glazier leads the nation in total tackles. Jabara Williams fell off due to his injury, Eddy was dropped due to recent play, and Rogers falls off as Richmond is struggling and does not warrant two candidates on the list at this point.

I was very close to putting him number one. I have seen all three players and I believe Presley and Jones are more explosive players but Barr has really come on. You saw I did not have him in my top five last week and he vaulted to number three this week. Yes he is. He is having a great year. With Ducasse I felt some of it was hype based on projection but I believe Ijalana can come right in and start as a rookie. Ducasse will need a couple years but Ijalana is pro ready right now. I was adomant that Chad Rinehart and Kerry Brown deserved votes a couple years ago and I must say Ijalana is better than both of those guys by far. If Barr, Presley, or Jones doesn't step out and really take the award I might have to put Ijalana in my top three. Don't be surprised if he has a number one vote from at least one person if someone on my current list doesn't have a real strong finish and truly deserve it.
