Only Three Undefeated Teams Remain in FCS Football
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Eight weeks into the college football season, only three teams remain perfect in championship subdivision football. Appalachian State and Jacksonville State, two of the three undefeated teams, are atop the FCS Coaches Poll this week, while the last team with an unblemished record, Bethune-Cookman, moved up three spots to No. 16 this week.
Appalachian State remained at No. 1 this week after picking up a conference road win against Western Carolina, 37-14. The Mountaineers received 26 first-place votes and 674 total points overall. Coming in right behind Appalachian State was Jacksonville State after a 56-3 win over Austin Peay to improve to 8-0 on the year. The Gamecocks moved up one spot from the previous week.
Stephen F. Austin, who received the final first-place vote and 612 total points, comes in at No. 3 this week.
William & Mary improved one spot to No. 4 after handing then-No. 2 Delaware its first loss of the season, 17-16. The Tribe overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to start out the season 6-1 for the second straight year. The Blue Hens had a chance to win the game with under one minute remaining, but a 42-yard field goal attempt by Mike Perry sailed right, allowing the Tribe to extend their home-winning streak to 10 games. It marked the second time this season that William & Mary was able to defeat the second ranked team in the nation, as they defeated then-No. 2 Villanova 31-24, on Oct. 2.
Villanova is the final team in this week’s top five.
Delaware drops to No. 6 after suffering its first loss, while Montana, Eastern Washington, New Hampshire and Wofford remain in the same position as last week to round out the top ten.
Bethune-Cookman, the lowest-ranked undefeated team in this week’s poll, improved to 7-0 on the year with a 23-10 win over North Carolina Central. The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and relied on a strong defensive effort, which forced four turnovers and scored one touchdown, to hold on to an important road win.
Chattanooga (No. 23) and Grambling State (No. 25) make its first appearance of the season into the top 25.
Falling out of the rankings this week are Furman and Northern Arizona.
Eleven conferences are represented in the poll, the most so far this season. The Colonial Athletic Association leads the way with seven ranked teams, while the Big Sky, Missouri Valley and Southern Conferences each have three ranked teams. The Ohio Valley and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conferences have two teams each, while the Ivy League, and the Big South, Great West, Southland and the Southwest Athletic Conferences each have one team in this week’s poll.
FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.
