Huge deal for UCA... I'm sure they've wanted to play stAte and the group from Fayetteville in football since the start of their move to Division I... and here it is!

After a 13-year layoff, Arkansas State and Central Arkansas officials are closing in on a deal for a one-time football meeting next fall.

The teams, who last met in 1997, reached a oral agreement and could have a contract in place “later this week” for a game in Jonesboro to fill a hole opened in Arkansas State’s 2011 schedule, UCA Athletic Director Brad Teague said Wednesday.

And this may open a FBS opportunity for another SLC or regional team...

Before UCA can sign the deal with Arkansas State, Teague has to track down a replacement for the slot vacated on Houston’s schedule. Among the options are fellow Southland Conference teams and FCS programs whom the Bears have faced in non-conference play, Teague said.

Quick chime in about UCA's 2011 schedule (I didn't want to register to post on UCAfans.com).

Where did you get that UCA plays EIU next year? Neither school has it listed in their future schedules...and EIU's schedule is full.

I just realized that TT. We don't play EIU again until 2012.

That is good news for the Bears. Playing the Wolverines will allow UCA an opportunity to play an in-state FBS team, collect a check, and get a good opportunity for a W. As for playing in the Razorbacks in Fayetteville, I'm not sure that will happen anytime soon.

A little more clarification on the situation:

UCA, ASU close to contract for 2011 football game (http://thecabin.net/news/local/2010-10-14/uca-asu-close-contract-2011-football-game)

Brad Teague, University of Central Arkansas athletic director, said today that he expects a deal to be reached within the next two days for a game between the Bears and Arkansas State in Jonesboro on Sept. 24, 2011.

"I think we will have a signed contract by the end of the week," said Teague. "We're still in negotiation but it's pretty much a done deal, I think."

The situation was created after Oklahoma State was forced to move its scheduled Sept. 24, 2011 football game with the Bears to 2015 because Big 12 realignment and the resulting new schedule that allowed in only one nonconference game.

Official...

JONESBORO (10/14/10) - The Arkansas State Department of Athletics announced Thursday the addition of a home game against FCS member Central Arkansas to its 2011 schedule, completing its non-conference slate for next season.

A-State will face UCA in its fourth game of the season, catching the Bears at ASU Stadium on Sept. 24. ASU's first four outings will be played against non-conference opponents, including longtime rival Memphis on Sept. 10 in the Red Wolves' home opener.

ASU will open the season at Illinois on Sept. 3 and also play Virginia Tech in Blacksburg a week before its game against UCA. With the addition of UCA, A-State will have six home games on its schedule for the first time since 2007 when it completed the year 5-1 at ASU Stadium. The Sun Belt Conference office will set the dates early next year for ASU's eight league games, which will include home contests against North Texas, Troy, Florida International and Louisiana-Lafayette.
