Jackson State sweetens pot for Comegy, assistants

New Jackson State football coach Rick Comegy is the highest-paid coach in school history, making $155,000 a year.
He also has the highest-paid assistant coach in school history on his staff.
New offensive coordinator James Woody makes $90,000 — $5,000 more than former head coach James Bell and slightly more than outgoing athletic director Roy Culberson's salary of $88,434.
It's also more than any head coach on campus except for Comegy. That includes men's basketball coach Tevester Anderson and women's basketball coach Denise Taylor, who each make $75,000.
"We've been together for a long time, and we work good together," said Comegy of Woody. "He does a fine job. You have to have a good offensive coordinator to be successful."
Woody is one of five assistant coaches who followed Comegy to Division I-AA Jackson State from Division II Tuskegee, where they teamed to win 90 games, four SIAC championships and a black college national championship.

New Tigers coach focuses on defense

Rick Comegy loves offense as much as the next guy.
But Jackson State's new head football coach's true love is defense.
"I'm a defensive guy," Comegy said. "When it comes down to the nitty gritty, defense is going to win it. You can outscore a lot of people, but when my life is at stake, I want to shut you down. That's the way I look at it."
That said, Comegy and his staff have been on the lookout for some of the best defensive prospects they can find to help shore up one of the worst defenses in the nation this past season.
"I-A, I-AA, all that's just alphabet to me," Comegy said. "If I see a player that I like, I'm going after him. We're not backing down from anybody."
