Hey Terror. My family and several others are looking forward to our first trip to Huntsville. We are looking for a great BBQ place. Preferably one that serves ice cold beer. Any suggestions?

Well - 'The Church of Holy Smokes' does not have beer, but well, well, well worth it! Check out these links, videos, etc...

Went with my parents on my last trip. They had never gone before - WOW! It's not far from Bowers Stadium either. Need to get my wife there.

We had found that place in our research. Maybe we will stop by and pick some up for the tailgate. I enjoyed some really good Texas Q years ago near Abilene. The place looked like an old barn and the first thing in the line was a tub full of Lone Star. That's what I'm looking for. Is there anything like that near the University? Thanks for the help and we will see you on Saturday.

The Church of Barbecue is the real deal for lunch. It is one of the best places for BBQ in Texas and that is no easy statement.

Are you driving or flying, elcid83? If you are flying into IAH, there are quite a few great eating options between the airport and Huntsville. And don't forget the prison museum.

Thanks Sly. We do fly in pretty early Friday to Houston. Sorry you guys lost to RM. Were they really that good? I don't think GW can have 5 turnovers and expect to beat anybody. I'm looking forward to conference play at this point.

Will not be there Saturday. Only home game that I am making this year is possibly McNeese. Was thinking SFA, but will actually be in Houston area for McNeese...

Will be at the Nicholls road game. Being all the way down here in the Cajun Corner does make it tough to attend games, especially since I have my own football games to attend locally.

Suffice it to say that the Flames played poorly and RMU wanted it more Saturday. But moving right along ...

Yeah, there are a ton of great eating options for you while you are down here. Since you will driving up I-45, I'd suggest you grabbing a meal Friday at Chuy's (http://www.chuys.com/) in the Woodlands/Shenandoah (18035 IH-45 South, Shenandoah, TX 77385). I highly recommend the Chuys Special enchiladas. That will take care of your TexMex fix. If you are simply dying for some Texas BBQ outside of Huntsville, there is a chain in Texas called Rudy's that has a location on I-45 at the Louetta exit in Spring. Its not the best BBQ in Texas but they serve up all of the options and have a sauce that is really strong.

SlyFox/Texas Terror/Other Bearkats - Should we GWU Bulldogs avoid McKenzies or is it a good BBQ place too? Found it on the net and it seemed to have good reviews? What about good Sports Bars in Huntsville?

I haven't eaten at McKenzies in years (like 7 or 8 years ... I eat at the church when I am in Huntsville). Then again, I generally am only passing through Huntsville on the way to Dallas.

My parents love McKenzie's - stop there when they stop in Huntsville when commuting. It's not anything special in my book. Would rather Mount Zion, which is some of the best BBQ I have ever had (and quite frankly an unusual experience, eating BBQ next door to a Church).

McKenzie's is always very good, they have excellent brisket and sauce. I would highly recommend it, I'm not sure if they serve beer though. The draft bar, Humphrey's, and Fat Boy's located on Sam Houston Avenue across from campus are a great place to grab some cold gold.

Oh yeah, EagleDawg. I forgot to mention that you will probably want to have your camera ready as you approach Huntsville. There's an enormous white statue of Sam Houston (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/7247) along I-45. It is so ridiculously over the top that it is a great photo op. But be warned, it is known to give children nightmares. My 3-year-old calls it the white giant and it is not meant as a term of endearment.

Running backs a strength for Bearkats?

When preseason football camp started at Sam Houston the first week of August, one of the biggest offensive concerns for head coach Willie Fritz and his staff was running back.

Not one player who had touched a ball as a running back last season returned. In fact, none of the running backs in preseason camp had participated in spring ball in April.

Two games into the 2010 season, however, running back appears to be one of the young squad's strengths.

The March to Bowers is on...

One of the most exciting evenings of fun and entertainment in Elliott T. Bowers Stadium history begins Saturday with the "March to Bowers" by the Bearkat marching band and cheerleaders.

Sam Houston State hosts the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in the annual Bearkat Family Weekend game at Bowers Saturday at 6 p.m.

At 4 p.m. the band, cheerleaders, Orange Pride and Sammy Bearkat will join with a variety of student organizations in a "mini-pep rally" at the Sam Houston mall.

Following the 10-minute "mini-pep rally," everyone involved will parade to the north end of the stadium to Bearkat Alley for the first pregame tailgate party of the season.

FYI - game is taped delays for a 9 p.m. start here in NOLA for this one... they got it on a broadcast channel, not cable - so that's huge!

I'll be at a Homecoming game tonight here in NOLA - so this isn't bad....

Well, so far our trip to Huntsville has been a good one. We're staying on campus in the University Hotel on the top floor with a lovely view of the stadium. Just got back from a run around a really nice campus. Folks in Huntsville have been very nice. After lunch at the Farmhouse [outstanding chicken fried steak] we went shopping for boots at Cavenders and Baskins [frankly, I'm more of a loafer and no socks kind of guy]. But the folks in those stores were extremely nice. They both steered us towards McKenzies and we enjoyed some fine brisket, ribs, and sausage. Unfortunately, they weren't serving any chopped pork [the staple of bbq in SC and NC] so we didn't get to compare that to ours, but overall, we were very happy with Mc's. Lots of families in there getting ready for Friday Night Lights. Huntsville is obviously proud of their Bearkats as there were orange shirts everywhere. We were surprised that so many folks recognized our GW gear and they were all excited about today's game. Should be a good one. Here's hoping the scattered t'storms don't make it our way.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

ElCid - where you eating today? Getting around to Mt Zion Church for BBQ?

May want to get that one in as early as possible so you can take a 'kitty' before the tailgating, game begins!

Kats have this one in the bag. They are looking pretty bad in "garbage time." Shows youth and a lack of discipline. Coach has to clean that up.
