Out of Seattle this morning:

SEATTLE - Got to admit, I’ve always had a blind spot when it comes to the Dakotas. Don’t know a lot about them, and I think it has to do with the fact there haven’t been a lot of big-time sports played there. So I can vouch for only a few things about the Northern plains:

Mount Rushmore. I believe Don James is second from the left.

The Corn Palace, celebrating the great Midwestern crop, in Mitchell, S.D.

The movie “Fargo,” in which Steve Buscemi played a perfectly snarky, no-account crook.

“Where The Hell is Wall Drug?” bumper stickers.

But this is changing, thanks to a pack of Coyotes and Bison, who are part of a national trend of upstart underdog programs giving fits to the establishment.

This kind of article is really lighting a fire under the football fans of the major programs in the Dakotas. USD has done their part with the big win over the Gophers. Everybody knows the success NDSU has had and SDSU made the playoffs first year eligible. Those are some top football schools starting to make some noise.

I dont know if Coyotes @ NDSU BISON, next week, is going to be as big as the "Border Marker". Thats been the premier college sporting event in the Dakotas since its inception. The first Division 1 competition in the Dakotas really sparked an interest in the Fans and re-energized a 100+ year old storied rivalry between two Mighty Land Grant Universities. Its now the largest sporting event in the history of the Dakotas.

It seems fitting that the 3 Dakota schools in favor of the D1 move are now enjoying success. I have nothing but admiration for the Coyotes and their program. Under certain circumstances I would like to see them in the MVFC. Its a lot of fun in Vermillion and their Dome is a great football venue.

I cant disclose if I will be in the Fabulous Fargo Dome for next week bowl game:

"THE BATTLE OF THE GIANT KILLERS"

It could be that the excitement of the entire match-up might make me leave my better judgment and act impulsively even if I run the risk of hearing a smoked-up aging hippie pontificating on the ins-and-outs of school representation while running a soft porno promotion of Bison Football.

I Welcome the Coyotes to the club. I welcome their school spirit, their community orientation and their competitiveness. Here's to a renewed spirit of competition and cooperation between the three premier D1 College athletic programs in the Dakotas. Welcome to the club Coyotes, join The Mighty Land Grants atop College Football in the Dakotas!! xhurrayx xhurrayx xhurrayx

NDSU vs. SDSU is the largest sporting event in the history of the Dakotas?? Really have you lived here for only about 5 minutes or what?? Yes the largest attendance game was against SDSU but UND games have always been the bigger EVENTS.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say? I know after you add up all the games, and I think hockey plays more games than any other collegiate sport, it gets to be a pretty big number. Similar to a big time college football game is my guess. But I wouldnt know. Like many people, I've never actually been to a hockey game.

The largest crowd ever to witness a sporting event in the Dakotas was at the Prestigious Fargo Dome. Caughlin holds the same record in South Dakota. Both were "Marker" games.

I dont want to get ahead of myself, we still have Morgan State, but when the dust settles at the Fabulous Fargo Dome the "Battle of the Giant Killers" is probably going to be in the top 5 game attendance all-time.

When the time comes I know there are going to be a whole lot of people up from Brookings too. That game could be the biggest all time if NDSU beats the 'Yotes. Then it will be a round-robin Dakota Football Championship between the "Big Three" besides "The Marker" and everything else.

Since 2004 some NDSU fans have replaced UND with SDSU as their rival, and they want to forget about the 100+ year history they had with UND including the Nickel Trophy the state wide tv game which was the only one televised, SDSU games were NEVER on tv prior to 2003, NFL films production of Football America (SDSU was never mentioned). So as long as we are not conference foes of NDSU they will always claim that SDSU is THE biggest game ever.

Even though the 4 Dakota schools don't play a complete round-robin all of them will play 2 of the other schools this season.

What if NDSU loses to USD, but beats SDSU and UND beats both USD and SDSU does that mean we win the UDF Championship.

I think the title is to be decided between the "Big 3": NDSU, SDSU and USD. Each school has distinguished themselves with an FBS win or two or has an FCS playoff appearance. Win or lose as they may its the round robin between the "Big 3" that will determine the Football Championship of the Dakotas.
