View Full Version : CAA - Week 2 Predictions

Week 2 has some tougher games to pick and still MUCH unknown about all the teams thanks to cream puffs and being the cream puffs. Good luck!

7-2 Overall
0-1 CAA

Villanova @ Lehigh
Staying near by in the state of PA can help after a tough loss. Lehigh gave themselves a tough OOC in order to really take a crack at the playoffs without relying on winning the conference. Can they do it? Sure, but not beat Nova to do it.
Villanova 32 @ Lehigh 17

Maine @ Monmouth
NEC to NEC doesn't seem as good after a 3-0 loss at home to Albany. Maine MUST rebound against Monmouth and I think does so in a big way to confuse us all more what is going on in Orono this year.
Maine 37 @ Monmouth 17

SDSU @ Delaware
FCS' Oklahoma/Florida State for week 2. SDSU were the darlings of the FCS taking out Montana for 2+ quarters and then packed it in. However, they left their credit card in the hands of Montana who racked up a large enough bill to over take the crazy lead SDSU built. Delaware saw their season disappear a little earlier but to some hated rivals in JMU and Villanova. JMU was dead, no pulse was found by their own fans and they had to travel to the Tub. UD thought the same thing and Delvin must have said something really nasty to one of the OL girlfriends as they sent a message they refused to block for him and JMU's one shining star, Moats and the DL, shined. That put them in a must win situation down the stretch which they could not produce after a 20-8 loss at home. Neither team played last week (West Chester was not a game and doesn't count either xliarx) so this a blank slate. FCS teams rarely travel as far as SDSU has to and could take a toll against a tough a traditional power sitting in their home digs. Won't be as good as VT/BSU, but should put up similar points.
SDSU 31 @ UD 36

UNH @ Pitt
Can we say 6 straight FBS wins for UNH? Why do teams keep scheduling them with their track record? Well, Pitt is a little bit better than all the rest even with their semi-surprising L last week.
UNH 13 @ Pitt 40

JMU @ VT
VT is on a short week and pretty deflated thanks to one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the country. JMU is a quality top 25 team too but in FCS not FBS...We haven't score the last 2 times to Blacksburg so that is the prediction, we score.
JMU 17 @ VT 45

Holy Cross @ UMass
HC had a nice home opener vs Howard from the MEAC. However, UMass is exponentially better than Howard and HC has them away from the friendly confines. UMass won't win going away but will keep it just comfortable enough.
HC 20 @ UMass 31

URI @ Fordham
Two teams who want out of their conferences badly. URI found the NEC while Fordham is playing the little brother who just tags along in the PL. Who will win? I have no idea after some poor performances last week. Heard URI has 17 returning starters. Sounds good to me.
URI 17 @ Fordam 12

VMI @ W&M
W&M didn't see themselves staring at a possible 0-2 start after such a great finish last season and there is good reason; they scheduled VMI for game #2. VMI won big last week but will struggle to stay in this one going to the 4th quarter.
VMI 23 @ W&M 38

Coastal Carolina @ Towson
Both of these teams had tough FBS teams the week before. While WVU > IU, Towson is a more improved team this year than CCU.
CCU 24 @ Towson 30

After a paltry 6-3 last week...

Villanova @ Lehigh. (NOVA) Mountain Hawks might win the PL this year, but I have a feeling this could be a bloodbath. Cats are going to show everything why Temple is actually a MAC favorite.

South Dakota State @ Delaware (SDSU) Could be a shootout, I think SDSU has the edge here because they have everything to gain from this. Upset special: Chickens are going to be punished for playing West Chester.

New Hampshire @ Pitt. (PITT) Would love to see UNH's streak continue, although this Pitt team is pretty solid and its tough to see the upset happening here.

Maine @ Monmouth. (MAINE). Monmouth played Colgate tough, but Maine can't possibly lose two to the NEC.

James Madison @ Virginia Tech (VA TECH). No shot. Blowout.

Holy Cross @ Massachusetts. (UMASS). Coming off a great win vs. W&M, UMass should keep rolling against this PL team.

Rhode Island @ Fordham. (FORDHAM). Give the edge based on home field advantage - even though Fordham layed an egg last week at Bryant.

Coastal Carolina @ Towson. (TOWSON). Hanging with Indiana for a few quarters is enough to show me they can hold off CC.

Virginia Military @ William & Mary (W&M). Fresh off a tough loss, they're looking for revenge.

villanova 35 Lehigh 14: Not really much of a contest - 3 straight losing seasons for Lehigh means this is a layup game for nova. I think they go up by a lot early and Lehigh tacks on some scores at the end in a snoozer.

Maine 28 Monmouth 14: It's week 2 and already a must win for Maine. Luckily, Monmouth can't play defense like Albany did so Maine should actually be able to score this week. Still too close for comfort for Maine, but their season can still be viable after a win this week.

SDSU 14 Delaware 35: Best FCS game of the week, and maybe one of the best FCS OOC games all year. Both teams return a ton of people from last year's teams and both have grand designs on excellent 2010 seasons. I like the Hens in this one - SDSU's going to want to run it right at the Hens and run defense is the strength of the Blue Hen defense with a deep DL and a great LB corp, not to mention safeties that love to play the run (see the Navy games). And this will be the type of game where Devlin, a second year UD QB, follows in the same path of other second year UD QB's (Hall, Flacco, etc) in really putting up a great performance. And we'll see if there's a new AP running back in FCS as freshman Andrew Pierce gets a chance to show if he's for real. Tough to come across the country and I think UD gets people's attention this week.

UNH 14 Pitt 42: Well, all good things have to come to an end, and UNH's mastery of FBS teams will end this weekend. Just picked too good of a team this time and Pitt needs to get the taste of last week's tough loss to Utah out of their mouth.

JMU 10 Virginia Tech 42: I don't think VT losing to BSU is going to see them have a let down this week. First home game, pissed off about losing a game they could've won last week, against a JMU team that I'm not sure is playoff worthy or not - game won't be close.

Holy Cross 7 UMass 35: UMass surprised me a little last week as I was really impressed by the new RB and by the offensive line. Havens and the passing game is still a huge liability, but that won't come into play against a vastly overmatched Patriot League team. UMass keeps the early season optimism rolling with a convincing home win.

URI 21 Fordham 20: Two teams I honestly know next to nothing about. Flip a coin.

VMI 10 W&M 42: VMI never wins in this series. We're on something like 20+ in a row for W&M and really, I don't think VMI will ever win again. This is W&M's cupcake game (well, ODU this year will probably fit that bill too, but at least there's the chance that ODU, in a few years, will be very good - there's no chance of that with VMI). W&M gets back on track, but we'll have to wait to see if the defense was as bad as it looked against UMass - VMI won't test it.

Coastal 14 Towson 17: A strange sight in Baltimore - a game Towson could actually win. Towson's getting a little better after hitting rock bottom, again, the past few years. They haven't had their hopes crushed yet in the CAA so I see them being a little spirited in this one and getting the W.

First of all, sure Temple is a MAC favorite - but how good is the MAC any more? Has the MAC ever been this bad?

And as for Delaware being "punished" for playing West Chester - what does that even mean? So Delaware played a patsy - everyone plays at least one patsy a year. How does UD playing a game that everyone plays hurt them when going up against a team that hasn't played a game yet? And frankly, doesn't Delaware have a lot to gain in this game too? After two years of no playoffs, and with Delaware being ranked behind SDSU, don't you think they have a lot to gain?

First, the easy ones (IMHO)

Villanova @ Lehigh
Maine @ Monmouth
UNH @ Pitt
JMU @ VT
HC @ UMass
URI @ Fordam
VMI @ W&M
CCU @ Towson

And my nominee for Game of the Week, and the difficult selection

SDSU @ Delaware

Both programs need/want this win to make up for how last season ended...and both are capable of winning...

How much will traveling to the Tub impact the Rabbits and will they play like the first half of last years Griz match...or the second half???

The Hens have a slight edge with home-field...

Every CAA School wins except the two playing Big Time FBS programs. Although I believe the Pitt/UNH game might be a little closer than the VT/JMU game.

All you guys picking Maine over Monmouth keep these two points in mind:

Warren Smith somehow kept his spot and will start at QB against Maine. He was absolutely terrible against Albany and got yanked at halftime.
Turcotte may not play (hip contussion).

Wild Kitten Offense 42 - Sands Casino Resort 13 - Coming off a tough loss at the Linc, the Wild Kittens will win this one big and get back to #1.

Panda Bear Cubs 17 - The Fighting Snooki's 3 - They can't afford to lose two weeks in a row. It just won't happen. But they still won't look good.

Salmonella Eggs 28 - Badlands Bunnies 17 - Poisoned Eggs won't be beat at home. Devlin is sick, in a good way.

Pro Combat Flunkies 45 - Mouseketeers 13 - Battle of Route 81 goes to the home team. Not even close.

Transfer City USA 32 - "What? I didn't get into BC!!!????" 14 - We will run the ball all day long.

"We still have a football team?" 27 - "I Can Haz No Playoffs?" 7 - Lose to Bryant = Lose to URI

Pocahontas Warriors 52 - We Can Unlock Any Door 7 - Don't know much about the Keys, but Bill is gonna be angry after that loss.

Tiger has Crabs 17 - Chicken of the Sea 13 - I have this funny feeling that this one will be close.

I Hate Sidney Crosby 37 - The Offense Wasn't Named After Them 21 - The streak will end.

Barber's picks are spot on IMO. For the record, I've enjoyed the hell out of his efforts as the JMU beat writer. I subscribe to his Twitter, and while I don't keep up with every post of his since I'm not a JMU fan, I do catch most of them. Great use of social media on his part.

Agree on all counts, we're lucky to have him. He also does a great job of JMU football play-by-play over Twitter, which I'm glued to whether or not I'm at the game. Did you read his previous blog about the top 25? He's a Sports Network voter and it's clear he takes that responsibility seriously.
