The UNI/NDSU and SIU/Ill games are tough picks. I don't know what to expect out of UNI yet, but I think they have enough to get it done against NDSU.

I think Illinois is terrible, and SIU has what it takes to win that game.

North Dakota State@Northern Iowa tough choice.
South Dakota State@Delaware Hard to pick against the bunnies, but it's a tough game.
Butler@Youngstown State If YSU loses I will be embarassed.
Missouri State@Kansas State Missouri State is supposed to be improved, but I doubt they win this one.
Southern Illinois@Illinois SIU should win this one.
Western Illinois@Purdue WIU will get pummeled.
Indiana State@Cincinnati If Indiana State wins they should be #1
Illinois State@Northwestern This is a hard one. I'll gives redbirds the benefit of the doubt after last week.

Matchups can vastly change a game though. I'm more afraid of SFA than Iowa St because of the offense SFA runs.

North Dakota State@Northern Iowa - Panthers by 13, UNI controls this one from the start.
South Dakota State@Delaware - home advantage and Pat Devlin are too much for SDSU, Hens by 10.
Butler@Youngstown State - Penguins by 20
Missouri State@Kansas State - Wildcats blow out the Bears by 24.
Southern Illinois@Illinois - Salukis win with a FG at the horn.
Western Illinois@Purdue - Boilers pull away in the 4th quarter, beat Necks by 13.
Indiana State@Cincinnati - Bearcats by 27.
Illinois State@Northwestern - Wildcats put up 50 and win easily.

North Dakota State@Northern Iowa I want to pick NDSU, but I think UNI is underrated.
South Dakota State@Delaware, Must get pressure on the Blue Hens' QB and establish Minett early
Butler@Youngstown State YSU has to be better than last year.... don't they?
Missouri State@Kansas State I like MSU's QB a lot. The kid's a gamer. One of my favorite players in the MVFC. But KSU will have too many athletes
Southern Illinois@Illinois SIU was by far the best team I saw last year. Lots of weapons and a very athletic defense. Illinois... well, I'm an Iowa grad... 'nuf said.
Western Illinois@Purdue The kids who pound that giant drum are going to be arm weary after this one.
Indiana State@Cincinnati Hard to dislike ISU Blue... but they're just not going to win this one.
Illinois State@Northwestern The Redbirds are better than they showed last week... but they're not going to beat Northwestern

I don't think I've seen a non-UNI fan say this in 2010. I try not to be the MplsBison of our fanbase, so I don't go around making bold predictions, but I think anyone who watches UNI-NDSU on Sat may come away with a much higher opinion of this years squad.

North Dakota State@Northern Iowa UNI by 15 last year in a game that was closer than the score. They have lost a lot. NDSU has gained a lot. Can UNI beat Kansas on the road? Can NDSU beat UNI on the road? Is one the hand worth two in the bush? NDSU had the worst defense in the league last year.

It definitely shocked me to see the conference coaches' preseason picks, and get past the first three and not see UNI in there. I figure, teams don't fall that fast, something has to be getting overlooked for them to get dropped to 4th or wherever.../

NDSU -ball control, vanilla offense, let uni's qb's lose the game
SDSU - because they almost have to win this game
YSU - by 50
KSU - hopefully MSU can keep it close until the 2nd or 3rd quarter
Illinois - almost picked SIU, but ..........
Purdue - by 30
Cincinnati - by 60
Northwestern - by 30

Besides the NDSU uni game, I'm interested to see how ISU-r holds up against Northwestern. I really don't know what to think of their sqaud after the shootout win vs D2. Also, SDSU has a big game and hopefully they can pull out a W for the mvfc.

What do you know about Butler?

NDSU over Kansas was less of a stretch, as well as a homer pick.

PantherRob82

Here are some facts about Butler:
-Beat Albion (not even sure what division they are) 29-13
-They went 11-1 in 2009
-playing 3 sub D-I teams
-the one loss was 36-7 to Jacksonville
-beat Morehead State in OT
-beat the only non-PFL/sub D-I they played, Central Conn State at Butler in the GIC(9-3, best win was Albany or Lehigh).
-7 of the wins were 7 pts or less

What about this makes you think they'll beat YSU? I would argue that YSU looked better against PSU(highly ranked), than NDSU looked against Kansas. They at least got a TD. (But a win is a win and this is just my opinion. :p)

NDSU - We are going to have some whining Iowans on our hands when the realization forms after Saturday's game that they just arn't going to be to any good this year. Playoffs? What playoffs?

SDSU - Because the MoValley needs some wins against CAA

YSU - getting their wins out of the way early in the season so they don't have to worry about them later

Kansas State - da bears may be back, but not quite enough for this contest

SIU - because the MoValley needs some more wins against the B10

Purdue - by 23

Cinci - 70-7

Northwestern - 60-27

A few thoughts about this weekend:

1) If I had a clone, I would send that clone to Cedar Falls Saturday to watch NDSU/UNI. The rest of the nation can have their OSU/Miami, Iowa/Iowa State, Penn St/Bama, FSU/Oklahoma, UM/ND, etc. I want to see the biggest grudgematch in all of FCS!

2) But unfortunately, I will be attending BOTH Illinois MVFC/Big Ten throwdowns this Saturday. And while I am very open to the possibility that I could be wasting my Saturday to witness two 30 pt blowouts, I also have a hunch that one of the two Valley teams will prevail this weekend. If both ISU and SIU happen to somehow win this Saturday, I might just go streaking down Green Street (in Champaign).

3) In maybe the most important game of the weekend, SDSU wins at Delaware, for the good of the MVFC over the CAA. (Common bunnies, we need you!)

Yeah because the 2 (TWO) seniors on our defensive two-deep indicate just how veteran a squad UNI has....

Oh, maybe it's the six seniors on the offense (including 3 Sr TE's, a back-up RB and a back-up OL).

Butler might be terrible, I don't know, bit I watched YSU this weekend and didn't see much I liked after the first qtr. From what I know about the two teams I had to pick Butler.

Ps. I picked NDSU over. Kansas. You have to realize that YSU was playing Penn State and Butler barely got by D3 Albion.YSU actually led after the 1st qtr. and they were still in the game at half-time.Our qb went 21-25 in his first college game ever--which is impressive even if it had been against Albion instead of Penn State.YSU actually won the time of possession and the score wasn't indicative of how close the game really was---expect YSU to run all over Butler this week and when basketball season hits we will most likely get our butts kicked.

Agree with you here. I watched the whole game and felt the offensive/defensive lines matched up pretty well with Penn State. Aside from a 5 minute stretch at end of first half/beginning of second half, we played a good game. I think YSU wins this one with Butler by at least 30 points.

Since you don't seem to be jumping at the bit, how about we make it a friendly wager?

If both XDSU's lose, you don't post on AGS for the rest of September.
If one XDSU wins, it's a draw

First two should be just about toss-ups, so I went with the home team. And yes, picking the Salukis in the upset, as Illinois looked weird in their opening loss to Mizzou, and Illinois is overdue for an FCS upset.

The Bears were strong against EKU, but don't think their own visit to Manhattan will be as fortuitous.

• Illinois State at Northwestern, 11 a.m. The Redbirds have the offensive firepower to scare the Big 10 Wildcats.
Northwestern 38, Illinois State 31.

• Western Illinois at Purdue, 11 a.m. The Leathernecks hung 45 points on Valparaiso. Purdue is not Valparaiso.
Purdue 35, Western Illinois 10.

• Indiana State at Cincinnati, 11:05 a.m. The Sycamores, now with two wins after snapping a 33-game losing streak late last season, are on the improve. But this is a tall order.
Cincinnati 48, Indiana State 14.

• South Dakota State at Delaware, noon. A good match-up for teams from two of the best FCS conferences. Home field probably makes the difference here.
Delaware 30, South Dakota State 23.

• Butler at Youngstown State, 5 p.m. This looks like the first victory of the Eric Wolford coaching era at YSU.
Youngstown State 49, Butler 10.

• Missouri State at Kansas State, 6:10 p.m. Too bad the Bears aren’t playing the other Big 12 team from Kansas.
Kansas State 38, Missouri State 20

• Southern Illinois at Illinois, 6:30 p.m. Can you say upset alert? This one almost seems too obvious, which is why it probably will not happen.
Illinois 38, Southern Illinois 31

• North Dakota State at Northern Iowa, 6:35 p.m. Valley play begins with a showdown inside the UNI-Dome. Coming off the upset of Kansas, can the defensive-minded Bison go one-up in the league?
Northern Iowa 20, North Dakota State 16

I watched the game and was extremely unimpressed by Ill St, particularly their defense. The crappy defense wasn't that big of a surprise after what happened last week; but the fact that Ill St. couldn't do anything on offense was a shocker.

Northwestern has a solid team, but not elite, and Ill St. should have at least put up a competitive showing. It was not competitive at all. I'm really disappointed by Ill St.

On the other hand, I was pleasently surprised by WIU. I thought they played a fairly competitive game with Purdue (who is better than Northwestern) even though a blowout was expected by most people.

Uhhhh...what? Purdue is better than Northwestern? I realize Northwestern lost some big pieces from last year's team, but they went to and nearly won a pretty big New Year's Day bowl last year, whereas Purdue lost to NIU and went 5-7. I'm not going to defend ISU's play so far this year, and I'll give props to WIU for hanging tough with Purdue, but until further notice, I would say ISU played the toughest opponent of anyone in the conference last weekend.

Also, for other Valley fans, don't read too much into Illinois' thrashing of SIU. It looks as though the Illini have a solid 6-8 win squad this year (somehow).

I don't know how they'll do as a team, but they are very athletic.
