Welcome to our annual Southland Conference prediction thread. I will not be keeping track of everyone's results week to week, so you are more than welcome to do your part in helping out! For purposes of Lamar's entrance into the league in 2011, we'll also be including them in our predictions!

Week One Game Listing
Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas
Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane
Northwestern State @ Air Force
Lamar @ McNeese State
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston
Sam Houston State @ Baylor
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M
Nicholls @ San Diego State

Week One TT's Predictions & Quick Analysis

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas - The first game to be played at a Southland Conference stadium is also the first 'tap-in' for those of us making predictions this year. CENTRAL ARKANSAS

Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - I may be attending this game, still have not decided. Always get offers of free Tulane tickets and the one thing that will not be free is the Tulane offense as they struggle against the SLU defense. SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA

Northwestern State @ Air Force - Poor 0-11 Demons from a year ago open up with an FBS team. Can these guys get a break? Not this week. AIR FORCE

Lamar @ McNeese State - The Cards will return to football and the crazy one himself, Billy Tubbs made sure they would get to play the rival Pokes. Lamar is bussing them in and they'll be a somber mood on the ride home. McNEESE STATE

Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston - Case Keenum. Kevin Sumlin. HOUSTON

Sam Houston State @ Baylor - SHSU is going to be hard-pressed to get the ball rolling with so many newcomers and a new coaching staff. A touchdown or two will be nice for the Kats, but unlike the NCAA tournament, there's no strategy that SHSU will impose on the Bears that will keep them in lockdown. BAYLOR

Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M - Whoop! This would be a big win for SFA if they could manage it somehow. Unfortunately, A&M is going to get better and quicker as they try to reverse their recent fortunes. Jeremy Moses may have some INTs in this one, especially if the Jacks' newcomers struggle against the A&M secondary. TEXAS A&M

Nicholls @ San Diego State - A new offensive scheme for the Colonels will not make the long trip to California pleasurable. Enjoy the beach fellas! SAN DIEGO STATE

TT's Predictions All-Time Results
2007 Record: 46-14 (24-4 SLC)
2008 Record: 40-22 (9-18 SLC)
2009 Record: 41-22 (16-12 SLC)
2010 Record: 0-0 (0-0 SLC)
Total: 128-58 (49-34 SLC)

Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - This one should be close and the Lions very well may pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Northwestern State @ Air Force Hopefully the Triple - O does not run rampant over the Demons
Lamar @ McNeese State I predict a cowboy but it's hard preparing for a game studying 20 year old game film
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston new QB and facing a high octane offense will make for a challange for the cats.
Sam Houston State @ Baylor Too many new puzzle pieces being shuffled for the Kats to be ready for this one.
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M Aggie defense is going to hurry Moses. If nothing else, the scholly difference will get them.
Nicholls @ San Diego State Long trip, new everything at Nicholls will make it a tough venue.

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas - The "well duh" pick of the week ... new look Bears with easy win.
Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - Matt Forte single-handedly beat a young SLU team in 2007; Forte's not there anymore and those youngsters are now seniors
Northwestern State @ Air Force - Should be a better Northwestern State team in 2010 ... not this week though
Lamar @ McNeese State - Welcome back to college football Lamar
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston - New TXST QB a Sumlin team ... not gonna happen
Sam Houston State @ Baylor - Bearkats are on the Fritz in Waco
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M - Results might resemble the last game SFA played
Nicholls @ San Diego State - Best thing for Colonels on trip out west will be In-N-Out burgers after the game

Most of these games are gimmes.

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas - CA big.
Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - Time to find out just what the Lions have.
Northwestern State @ Air Force - NSU should be improved but it's not a good week to find out how much.
Lamar @ McNeese State - It won't be pretty but welcome back LU!
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston - Think TXST has too many holes to fill to make this one interesting.
Sam Houston State @ Baylor - With Robert Griffin III back in the saddle, tough game for SHSU with all of their newness.
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M - Would love to see SFA surprise the Aggie's!
Nicholls @ San Diego State - Nothing has be to said...

Anyone planning to head to College Station?

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas - where is Elizabeth City State?
Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - I'm looking for an upset against a very bad FBS team
Northwestern State @ Air Force - Air Force is just too good. Ask Houston.
Lamar @ McNeese State - Interested in seeing what Lamar has to offer
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston - Case Keenum. Enough said.
Sam Houston State @ Baylor - I don't really have much of an opinion here
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M - I know I'm being a homer, but I think its very possible.
Nicholls @ San Diego State - Who scheduled this and how much is Nicholls being paid?

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas - UCA, dunno anything about ECS

Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - Tulane by 13

Northwestern State @ Air Force - Air Force by at least 7 TDs

Lamar @ McNeese State - McNeese by 17

Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston - As much as I'd love the Bobcats to keep it close I'd be happy for them to keep it within 4 TDs

Sam Houston State @ Baylor - Baylor by at least 5 TDs

Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M - After what I saw of SFA's OL and DL last year in San Marcos I'll say A&M by 8 TDs, after 4-5 years in a row of opening day close calls/disappointments Aggies are ready to totally dominate this.

Nicholls @ San Diego State - SDSU by 6 TDs

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas--Bears 45-10

Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane--As much as I would LOVE the Lions to win, I predict a victory for the GREEN WAVE, 24-21

Northwestern State @ Air Force--Unfortunately, this one will get ugly quickly. USAFA 63-7

Lamar @ McNeese State--McNeese silences the Cards, SMURF COWBOYS 42-14

Texas State @ Houston--Unfortunately, this one will get ugly quickly. But unlike Air Force, Houston doesn't really have a defense...or a reason to play defense. UH 63-28

Sam Houston State @ Baylor--Return of RG3. Kats have lots o' questions...and a new coaching staff. UH OH. BAPTISTS 56-3

Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M--WHOOP! TAMU 56-14

Nicholls @ San Diego State--Aztecs suck. Nicholls may just suck a little more. AZTECS 42-10.

Thus far, there is a lot of confidence from the SLC posters that McNeese will beat Lamar...

Are we waiting for some Lamar fans to share their opinion? Are they willing? Would love to think what they think after taking in a scrimmage and/or practices...

McNeese should and probably will beat Lamar but the Cardinals will get better as the season goes along (without major injuries). The Cowboys are ranked in all the polls I've seen and we are a first year program. Talking about scrimmages and practices Lamar had what, 15 practices in the spring and then what we've done this summer. Now, we are starting out with McNeese in Lake Charles. You'd be a foolish person (Lamar fan/alumnus or whatever) to pick Lamar over McNeese Sept 4th. I think long term it will build on on our rivalry since our campuses are so close and we'll be recruiting the same players.

We'll win a few games this season but it probably won't be versus McNeese or SFA.

You could at least make this a little fun and talk about all the positives that Lamar has.

This should be the easiest week to pick unless there are some upsets:
Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas (W) 10-31
Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane (W) - Do you really think the refs will let you win this game? 17-21
Northwestern State @ Air Force (W) 10-35
Lamar @ McNeese State (W) Hard to say since Lamar hasn't played a game yet. 21-28
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston (W) 7-28
Sam Houston State @ Baylor (W) 7-21
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M (W) 28-42

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas = UCA blowout
Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane = 2 touchdown win by Tulane
Northwestern State @ Air Force = Air Force blowout
Lamar @ McNeese State = low scoring first half, McNeese pulls away in 2nd half
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston = Houston blowout
Sam Houston State @ Baylor = Baylor blowout
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M = Texas A&M blowout
Nicholls @ San Diego State = SDSU blowout

Lamar should have a decent defense, not so sure about the offense yet. I don't think they'll have much of a running game but should have a good passing game. I'm afraid the offense will be prone to turnovers early on, and if that happens then the score won't be pretty.

I disagree. McNeese wins, by 10 or less....The game will be very close. I would not be at all surprised to see McNeese down headed into the fourth quarter, needing a come-from-behind rally to win. Don't expect to see many formations nor much of the playbook...

If we are behind into the fourth quarter, watch the clock closely. You'll see what appears to be magical clock management in the last 7 minutes of the game ;)

I'm very worried about the Lamar game but it's in a "don't know what to expect" vein. Total unknown. I do know Lamar is located in a very high talent area and has a lot of transfers. I don't think McNeese can assume it'll have a big advantage in raw talent. Also, Lamar has plenty of McNeese film to study while McNeese has zero Lamar film. Lamar will obviously be very pumped and I've heard a lot of fans are going to go from Beaumont to Lake Charles. I am not at ALL taking this one for granted. I guess if I had to bet on just who is going to win I'd bet McNeese but I don't feel like it is a lock at all.

Not sandbagging. Appalachain State wasn't sandbagging either. I mean, what would you think if your team barely got by Henderson State then had to play at App State the next week? Unfortunately the team that played Henderson State rather than the one that played Appalachian State showed up for the playoff game.

But I digress.

The point is we don't know what Lamar's talent level is. And, again, McNeese is in the unique situation of having absolutely zero Lamar game video to study. After this first game everybody else Lamar plays will have game video to look at. To me not having game video to look at is a tremendous disadvantage. Lamar has a tremendous edge in that area.

Serously: How could we "know" it? Does anybody know what Lamar's got? There have been quite a few articles about guys transferring in there from FBS schools. Believe me, I hope McNeese does blow Lamar out. But I don't see how I or anyone else could be really confident that's going to happen.

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas - UCA by 70!
Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - SELA in an upset... Tulane will be caught off guard.
Northwestern State @ Air Force - My old USAF buddies will probably roll in this one, but 4 TD's.
Lamar @ McNeese State - Pokes should win by 30+. Lamar may have a lot of transfers, but their team chemistry and lack of experience will show.
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston - Cougars QB will probably have 6 TD's and big win.
Sam Houston State @ Baylor - Baylor in a respectable game? Maybe by 14.
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M - SFA may be pretty good, but A&M should be top of Big 12, not too close.
Nicholls @ San Diego State - Never know about Nicholls, they can shock some teams like this if they still ran the option. SDSU by 21

Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - SELA 28-24.

Lamar @ McNeese State - Lamar has not played a game but alot of these players have. 17 juniors on the starting lineup for Lamar with playing experience either in JUCO or a FBS transfer. If the team can gel it could be an interesting game. Pokes 35-21.
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston - UH 42-21
Sam Houston State @ Baylor - Baylor 49-14.

Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane- SLU puts up a great fight, but Tulane puts away SLU at the end 27-21
Northwestern State @ Air Force- AFA runs all over the Demons 49-10
Lamar @ McNeese State- Lamar comes out of the gate firing, but McNeese is a really tough first game 38-20
Texas State @ Houston- H-town has a great offense and TSU can't keep up, but they do score a lot 56-31
SHSU @ Baylor- Baylor has Robert Griffin back at QB and Randolph is not ready for an FBS defense 56-10
SFA @ Texas A&M- Aggies have a good offense, but SFA will put up some points 63-34
Nicholls @ San Diego State- SDSU isn't a very good FBS team, but Nicholls isn't a very good FCS team 38-13

Well, the film we have of Lamar is over twenty years old. We don't have a clue at what offense or defense they are going to run. And they have all those transfer players and they keep adding them everyday. Hell, they probably have players that we don't even know they have. ;)

Plus, they are like USL (ULL or U whatever the hell they are called). They beat us the last game twenty something years ago, so they are sure they can do it again.

This is a trap game for us.

The McNeese fans are flattering us a bit too much. I would love to see a Cardinal win, I think if we won Beaumont would riot, but it's not going to happen... this year.

Elizabeth City State @ Central Arkansas 10-31
Southeastern Louisiana @ Tulane - If a game is close enough and a fellow SLC team is in it I'll take the SLC team every time. Get 'em Lions! 27 - 24
Northwestern State @ Air Force 10-42 Air Force is very very disciplined. Did you guys see them against Houston last year?
Lamar @ McNeese State 17 - 31
Texas State-San Marcos @ Houston 10 - 34 I wish TxSt could make this one interesting but the Houston offense is high flying
Sam Houston State @ Baylor 7 - 28 Were talking about the Big 12 here.
Stephen F. Austin @ Texas A&M 21-42 Big 12 wins again, although the jacks will come to play.
Nicholls @ San Diego State 7-17 I don't know much about these teams.

The LU Vs. MSU game will be just as interesting as it is exciting for Lamar fans. As McNeese fans have pointed out, the lack of film will give us an advantage early on, but depth and experience will allow McNeese to roar back in the second half.

What to watch for with Lamar:
Special Teams - We have some young guys at key positions here, if they don't adequately step up in this first game we could see some big plays or nice starting position for McNeese.

Secondary - Inexperience abounds in this area as well. Our 4-2-5 system may help ease the load but if McNeese gets the ball moving through the air it will be very ugly.

Running Game - Our No. 1 running back will be sitting out this game due to a fracture in his hand, this is very bad for us.

The positive:

Arial Attack: I think the SLC will be surprised with how well we move the ball through the air. If Andre Bevil feels confident early look out McNeese he is going to give you a bit of a fright in the first half.

D Line - These guys are very good. Probably the best unit on the team. We could create some problems for the offense with these guys up front.

Can't wait for the game. Can't wait to renew such a wonderful rivalry with MSU. I think it will grow to become one of the best in the SLC in years to come. Thanks pokes for giving us such a wonderful first game, the only two things that could make it better: a.) if it were at home and b.) we had a repeat of the 1989 game.

That is one of the few things that will be good for us because our offense sees a 4-2-5 defense everyday in practice. That is one thing that our QB Jacob Bower said this week. I can't wait to see if Jacob looks as good in a real game as he has looked in the scrimmages. We just need to get some WR's healthy so that he will have someone to throw to besides TE Corday Clark.

I sent a txt to my son, who plays for Air Force, and asked him how many points the AFA could've scored. He told me his cousin under center indicated they could've gone for 105 if the o-coord didn't show "class."

Looks like the SLC got OWNED by FBS.

*Still looking for the words "comparison(s)" and "SWAC" in the thread subject or my post. lol Good luck next w/e SLC. My interest is done. I was only interested in this particluar game, nwst vs AFA, due to my seed competing against an SLC school.
