Got to wonder why Lindy's would choose Tony Moss, someone who hasn't covered I-AA/FCS since 2003 to write an article like this? Total disrespect for FCS by recruiting someone like him to write about the subdivision. And so much for him being some sort of FCS expert. He can't even count from 1 to 25 (obviously, neither can the Lindy's editors).

And then there are all of the ridiculous teams he ranked and an All-America team that is riddled with question marks. He must have used a dart board for his rankings and his All-America team. This is what the younger generation would call AN EPIC FAIL. Even my teenage and pre-teen daughters, who do follow FCS a bit, were shaking their heads about this disaster of a preseason prognostication.

Stick with the NFL, Mr. Moss, if you even know anything about that.

In TxSt's defense we have a very solid core of players coming back. If we find a QB then we will have one of the top offenses in the nation again and this year the defense will likely be at least average which is a huge improvement over the last few years. UNH at #22 is a joke though.

New Hampshire should be in the top 10, IMO, and should finish in the top three of the tough CAA. People forget that UNH was the ONLY team to beat Villanova last season in VU's title year and that UNH has a great nucleus coming back. Plus, Sean McDonnell is one of the very best coaches in FCS.

Oh, I haven't forgotten. But honestly, it wouldn't shock me if UNH went 6-5 and finished around 22. Their schedule is so tough this year and I could see them losing to Pitt, Nova, W&M, Delaware and UMass, or some similar combination. That being said, I don't see that as the most likely result, which is what a preseason poll should reflect.

Well that's the problem. We'd be more than happy to play you in the playoffs, even on your field, but you don't participate in the playoffs. And you talk about last year's performance, but you guys only played 1 OOC game last year (which you lost, albeit closely) despite playing only 9 regular season games. So it's kind of hard to take you guys seriously as far as national rankings are concerned when you seem to make no effort to test yourselves outside of the friendly confines of the SWAC. Would it kill you to schedule a SoCon or Southland team?

There is currently no quarterback on your roster - at this point - that anyone feels is up to snuff in being the No. 1 QB. Unless your true freshman puts up one of the best seasons for a true freshman in the history of the league, TXST will struggle to keep pace with SFA and SLU.

It would kill "history" if we played the Southland, from what I'm beginning to just now understand. I think there are some older-heads who just don't desire to see or want PVAMU dealing w/ the SHSUs, SFAs, and the like if there isn't some type of advanced probability $$$ attached to it. (this is only my opinion from how I see it)

Prime example... PVAMU and SHSU are no more than 1hr-20min drive-time from each other. Speaking from what I'm understanding of PVAMU schedule creation, the driving force now for OOC is FBS first and foremost. We want a nice payday and also a game that lets us gauge exactly where we are. Last fall, it was New Mex St only AFTER the prior year's scheduling snafu w/ SHSU via hurricane Ike. Ensuing negotiations broke down tremendously (from what I was told) so "staff" (PV) went in another direction and it's painfully evident now since we have university of southern miss on the schedule this fall (2nd game of the season @ their place).

For myself, I'd LOVE for us to battle the likes of McNeese, SFA, and SHSU. Even better would be if we battled university of houston and rice. The creme' de la creme' would be our football team visiting kyle field FINALLY or going to austin to bump heads w/ that professional team lol called the texas longhorns. After the battle, we'd sure love the 500,000+$ paycheck we could potentially garner. :)

A little note about this...

No. 9 was supposed to be Colgate, and the one-liner about them was: "Patriot League’s most consistent team led by RB Nate Eachus and strong defense."

It was some sort of snafu in editing, which happens when you put out a 240-page book.

Mr. C
June 2nd, 2010, 08:48 PM
One of the struggles in picking a preseason top-25 this year is that all teams have question marks, heading into a season. While ASU has a huge question mark at quarterback, the Mountaineers have fewer question marks at most other positions than some of the other teams do. Make no mistake, ASU is a very talented team.

i kind of agree, but we (JMU) got the same pre-season respect (not quite #2, but we were up there somewhere) after Rodney left. part of the benefit of being an established program. you get the opportunity to solidify (justify) your ranking, rather than having to "climb the ranks". and to be honest, i can't come up with another team deserving of #2. the other reason for ASU is because you've completely dominated the SoCon for several years now, and the SoCon champ almost always gets a seed. so that puts you at least in the top 4 at tourney time. ASU and Montana are the safest bets most years, if you go by who gets seeded/makes the tournament.

to me, it's Villanova and then everyone else. if Sczcur comes back, the only thing between them and another national title would be injuries or choking.

We have three QBs on the roster including the last year's second string Tim Hawkins. A lot of fans are currently down on Hawkins, but he did throw a touchdown against TCU (Which not every QB that played them managed to do) and had 8+ yards per carry with the limited time he played.

SpiderFan
June 3rd, 2010, 12:24 PM
Yeah there is no way the spiders should be slotted at number 3 to start the season with all the losses and question marks on the offensive line and at QB. I don't think we should be any higher than about 15 to start the season.

June 3rd, 2010, 03:36 PM
Lots of things to pick apart in this poll, but will stick up for one odd one (much as I hate to do it, growing up in SWMO and hating them as a team). Missouri State only had ten seniors last year, graduating only their #2 rusher and #2 receiver and kicker; played .500 ball in a tough conference, and really only had two big losses in conference (at Carbondale and at home to UNI). Are they definitely a top 25 team? Well, probably not, but given how hard it is to judge 21-25 three months in advance, don't find them in this poll to be too upsetting.

Well, let's vote New Hampshire # 9, even though they might should be higher.

What did happen to JMU last year? Did they lose their QB?
Also, Delaware had a pretty good FBS QB coming in last year. Did he not turn out too good or was he injured?
Would think both those teams will do pretty well this year.

Why is Richmond picked higher than Bill and Mary in all the polls? Didn't they loose a bunch and W&M have a ton coming back? xconfusedx

Richmond has a quarterback coming in from USC of which great things are expected. The question is whether they will have a line to protect him.
