The stadium looks like it will be as classy as your school is, very nice. Reminds me of Elon, on the small side but really well done.

Where does the varsity tema play? Just kidding

Very nice. Looks small... smaller than Elon's stadium. I guess that's because there is no big hill for extra and overflow seating. With a NC under your belts, was an increase in attendance not expected?

Well it was not about what UR wanted in stadium size, it was about what they could get approved by the City of Richmond. The city / neighbors basically would only allow the stadium to be the same size as the current Robins Center Arena. Maybe in the future it will enlarged. There will be bleachers behind the East endzone, the one further from the camera in these pics.

Which side is taller/bigger, the press box side or the suites side?

How much is a suite for the season?

bostonspider
February 24th, 2010, 04:52 PM
I think the two sides are close to the same height, though the Luxury Suite side is longer.

Here is the plan

No clue what the suites go for, but I will ask around.

Looks very good. Seeems like a nice area for a stadium. Shame the neighbors complained about the original size. Hopefully you can expand soon. Hope you have many victories there. Sounds as if your recruiting may be helped by your new stadium also. Look forward to sitting there some day.

officially will only seat 8700 -- I understand they have some plans for overflow (sure that wouldn't mean much more than 9700 total)

school sits in the middle of a wealthy neighborhood with small roads leading in anad out, lot's of political power. It was this size or stay off campus.

What was your average attendance in 2009? I imagine it was up there coming off a national championship.

http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/football_records/Attendance/2009.pdf

2009 - 9,413
2008 - 7,337
2007 - 6,287
2006 - 7,296
2005 - 6,066

Keep winning FCS Championships and drive up attendance. Then find yourself a big money donor to build you a bigger stadium off campus and then you can turn Robins Stadium into one of the better FCS Soccer/Lacrosse stadiums out there:D

The size of the stadium has nothing to do with dollars. Richmond could find the money needed to give the stadium 20k seats under their couch cushions.

As someone else pointed out the issue is the neighborhood and zoning. They had to keep the stadium under a certain size to get it approved to be constructed in the neighborhood.

Well now that we've established that, I'll call UR immediately and have them halt construction. xrolleyesx

There will be student seating in the far end-zone that will not be part of the permanent structure.

Seating info is coming out now too. We'll start selecting seats based on donor levels and priority points at the end of April.

I know I am a bad alumni and should know this - but do we still own the property on the Reynolds Metals campus or did we get rid of it. While I am very happy that football will be on campus , seems like that Reynolds site could have been a nice alternative

Why? Noise reasons? Parking?

The wealthy neighbors don't want the kind of riffraff a football game would garner trampling their azaleas. They told their politican friends how big the stadium would be.

Good for them. I sure as hell wouldn't want the riff-raff that associates with the local football team anywhere's near my home. Bunch of drunks them are.xsmiley_wix

This. I really think they missed the boat on not putting the stadium at the Reynolds site.

Well UR leases out the historic Reynolds Building to Phillip Morris and Altria. The structure was designed in the 60's by Bunshaft / SOM and is actually pretty cool, with grounds by Gillette. UR only owns maybe 30 or so acres there, so I am not sure there would have been room for the stadium and parking, without tearing down the building.

Looking at this overhead. UR only owns the square "doughnut" building to the upper left, with green space above and to each side, and two parking lots at the bottom corners. The large development below this building is called Reynolds Crossing and was bought from Alcoa by Reynolds Development

The real reason for the small stadium size was a lack of parking. There are only about 4,000 parking spaces on campus, which is apparently enough for about 8,700 fans and the regular students on campus. This article from the UR paper talks specifically about student seating, but also has other info about why the stadium is the size it is.

That also wouldn't solve the ole' off-campus conundrum which is why they were leaving city stadium in the first place.

Thanks Boston Spidey for the pictures, they acquired that property after I left and all I can remember about it was the big chain link fence and it being the last stop light before getting on 95 to go home for break. Given that space I'm gald they went through with what they did.

Back in North Carolina...

I wish that they had brought forward the idea of a "greek theater" in one endzone.

It was shown in this initial plan

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2687/4388379570_3a17f191d5_o.jpg

I did a quick photoshop adding it to the current plan

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4388421044_558009b4c1_o.jpg

We currently have a Greek Theater on the other side of campus, and I would have loved to have seen a similar design at the Stadium.

Now that is something I would like to see! UR's campus is beautiful, and something like that, sure would have added class.

This is still a good looking facility, without the Greek seating!

.....and no offense....the current municipal stadium behind Cary St is a dump. Glad to see that your school decided to bring the stadium to the campus.
