Former Western Illinois football coach Don Patterson says school lied about his health
Former Western Illinois football coach Don Patterson claims his departure early this season was not for health reasons cited publicly by the university, in a letter to officials on the Macomb, Ill., campus.
Lawyers for Patterson gave legal notice Monday to the university of the former head coach’s intention to pursue action for defamation, breach of contract and violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Family and Medical Leave Act.
Patterson, a former assistant coach at Iowa under Hayden Fry, contends the athletic department jeopardized his ability to get another job because it falsely claimed he left in September due to his battle with the after-effects of cancer treatments.
