View Full Version : UD vs JMU

TexasTerror

JMU puts the brakes on UD's offense early.

3rd and 9. Shotgun and Devlin is sacked.

3-and-out. JMU to get the ball.

Moats with his eighth sack.

EDIT: of the year, not in this game, that'd be some kind of record or something

TexasTerror
October 31st, 2009, 11:12 AM
Are we expecting a low scoring game? It's super early, but the defenses on both sides are not giving much wiggle room.

Another punt. JMU goes 3-and-out.

mcveyrl
October 31st, 2009, 11:13 AM
I would not expect JMU to score many points. Whether UD scores a lot is up to their O-line and Devlin. It sounds like we're getting good pressure.

Sorry, but LOL at that throw by the JMU QB. Had the TE wide open running down the seam and the throw wasn't anywhere near the guy.

Thorpe seems like he got put in a rough situation with the injury to your starter. Going to be a long way until the end of the season, eh?

Devlin should be able to get the Blue Hen offense going shortly, would think.

Come on guys! Pay attention.

Seemed like everyone thought the play was dead. UD really botched that one and now JMU took advantage.

For those not watching, Devlin fumbles. Ball rolls around and not many paying attention. JMU gets it in UD territory.

WAIT - play overturned. UD is going to punt...what the heck was that?

mcveyrl
October 31st, 2009, 11:17 AM
radio is saying that was a fumble. anybody on tv can confirm?

TexasTerror

Hard to say. It was one of those 'tuck rule' type things where you could've gone either way. Would have been better if the officials went with their instincts...

JMU getting some pressure though once more...

11 rushes for 42 yards, 1 TD, NO fumbles

Sr WR Rockheed McCarter (#8) 3 catches for 125 yds. He made up for being stripped from behind at the 5 after catching the bomb by catching another bomb on the next series and holding on, despite pass INT being called. Nice to see him have a big game as he is one of 2 Philly products on JMU's team. A guy who if it wasn't for his older brother playing at JMU and now a JMU cop probably would be on some I-A team now. He's a chiseled 6'3", 220, good hands and speed, hopefully will end up in someone's camp next yr.

Sr tightend Mike Caussin (#85) 3 catches for 71 yards. Was nice to see him get more than 1-2 catchable balls thrown his way as has been the case since the Liberty game. 6'5, 245, good hands, decent speed for a tightend, may not be a good enough blocker for the next level.

O-line played decent today.

Defense. Wow. 8 sacks according to the stats. A # of other times Devlin had to scramble to avoid a sack. JMU d-line was just schooling the UD o-line.
-Moats, not surprising was the leading sacker- 2.5. Still will be leading the nation in TFL and in the top handful in sacks. Darn it Mickey, why'd you have to play Moats as a true freshman in 06'.xmadx
-rSr DT Sam Daniels (#58) had 2 sacks. He gotten overshadowed by Moats this yr, but was only one of 2 interior DLs to get All CAA honors last season (10 of 12, including all 8 on the 1st and 2nd team, were de ends). Daniels hadn't had a lot of sacks coming in, now has 10.5 TFLs on the season, including 4.5 sacks. Coming into the game in In tackles by a de lineman, Daniels was tied with Tracey and Parker from UR for 2nd in the CAA (course Moats was leading by a wide margin).

McGee did a good job covering Duncan- broke up a # of passes thrown his way. As I stated earlier in this thread, I expected McGee would be on Duncan much of the game.

2 punt returns only netted 10 yards, but he did have 73 on 2 kick returns.

Obviously I've been looking at the CAA football stats. Game stats:

If you think one game is indicative of how good a player is then...well I guess there isn't much to say other than you're right...he's terrible...your guy is the best...and when he's playing on Sunday...not holding a clipboard...if even that...it's because he got lucky...

The team, including Pat, played bad...thats' it. A game like this sucks because you can't have those let down games when you a blow a golden oppurtunity to get a win in the early part of the year and let it slip away. We win Richmond, this loss isn't so bad...unfortunetly we did and it is a killer...doesn't change the type of player Pat is.

FWIW with under a minute left the intentional delay of game followed by the punter walking out of the back of the end zone for the intentional safety knocked JMU from over 400 yards offense to under 400....

On Henzone and the CAA prediction thread some UD posters had stated JMU had become their biggest rivalry. I called baloney on that.
Homecoming+ your biggest rivalry + a team that before yesterday was in the playoff hunt doesn't = a game that isn't close to a sellout (the stadium was maybe 80% full). (Granted JMU may have had only 500-700 fans there, but even IF JMU had been say 6-1 or 5-2, ranked in the top 10 and in the playoff and CAA title hunt JMU might have brought maybe 2k).

What do Sunday's have to do with anything right now - they are playing college football. And Thorpe played the better college game yesterday and won.

The attendance was 20,639, about 1,500 short of a sellout. There were barely any JMU fans there. If JMU wasn't having such a bad season and your fans had shown up you would have made it a sellout. The walkup was likely next to zero with the rain all morning and during the first quarter. Plus, a sizeable portion of our homecoming crowds never make it to their seats. Just the way it is. There are a group of four in front of me that come to every game. Yesterday two of them were there and one of the other two staggered up the steps in the middle of the first half, stood in the aisle for a second, yelled to his friends, waved, turned around and went back out to the tailgates.

Well, looks like the CAA will only get 4 teams in after this week, with UD falling to JMU and Maine upending UMass.

Yes - and it is good news for the 4!

I'm still not on the Thorpe bandwagon, although he did play better today. It's amazing what happens when you only turn the ball over once.

Hands down, our defense won this game. We took a pretty good offense and did not allow a TD on the road. As much as our defense has been on the field in the past 4 weeks, I think this is one hell of an accomplishment.

The defense played great, no question about it, but the defense also played well enough to win against UR and W&M. But when you can't score, you're not going to win. The offense was able to put together enough drives to give the defense some rest, which they just didn't get against W&M or Nova.

Agreed, our defense was dominating. Devlin did not have time to blink, plus our secondary shut down the receivers.

As far as Thorpe, he did show improvement for the first time this year. Congrats to him. But the half was the usual "3rd and eight Thorpe".

Overall a positive for us to build on with the exception of our kicking game excluding David Skahr.

As far as Thorpe is concerned, I don't think he's going to perform like that all the time from here on out.

BUT, I'm very excited to see what he can do now that he's got some confidence. He made some really great decisions on the belly opton and on some more traditional option pitches. And of course his passing was pretty good as well.

I actually may not get plastered before the Maine game so I can see what he does!

MCVEYRL,

That's just crazy talk...not getting plastered before a football game is like not bringing whiskey to church...it just doesn't make sense.

JMU's D looked incredible. You guys have lost to some great teams this year. You have a young QB and that can hurt you even witha great D. Our defense last year, before they got so run down from over exposure, was much better than this year's squad and had they had an offense to help them at all, we might have had a pretty good year. It just goes to show you that in this league, if you don't have a solid QB who doesn't turn th ball over you can't win even with a very good defense. I think Thorpe will be cut from the same cloth as Landers and by the time he leaves you'll be speaking about him in the same light....just give him time.
