View Full Version : Georgia Southern @ Appalachian State for all the marbles

Well...not quite all the marbles, but close. GSU has not given up on at least an at-large bid. If we lose we have little hope of getting there. If App. State loses then they are one loss away from elimination with games against Furman and Elon left to play on the road.

GSU's defense will at least be the best FCS defense they have played all year and possibly the best defense (yes, I know someone will bring up how many points we gave up to UNC versus ECU but just keep in mind that UNC had two defensive touchdowns and two more take-aways in GSU territory). GSU's offense isn't anything scary but it is better than it was early season. And just like the last two times we played App., Hatcher will unleash some things he has cooked up that he is saving for this game. I'm thinking the game will be close, but AE et all will make one more big play than GSU does. xbangx

It took a Jayson Foster offensive spectacle to beat us in Boone last time, and you don't have him anymore. I'll take ASU at +14.

Throw the records out.........it's always close. Each team gets everyones best shot every week. The long range forecast calls for a cold drizzle.

App State is just not going to blow teams out by halftime like in the years past. The rest of the games will be within 10 points or less, right now we are just doing enough to win. I'm going with 34-31 ASU. GSU always plays us tough no matter what.

The difference between that game and this one is that our defense is going to be light-years better than it was in 2007. In 2007 we basically had no depth anywhere other than the DL. I seriously doubt App's offense is any better than it was that year, either.

Our offense is not as good and our defense is better than the UTC game shows. UTC got 7 and GSU got 3 in garbage time. I think this is going to be a low-scoring game and could be the fewest points in a GSU-ASU game in a long time.

Samford's defensive numbers are WAY better than GSU's. And Citadel's are pretty similar to GSU's (though, you are probably right if you take out the SDSU disaster).

I can't really make a prediction in good faith... because, I haven't seen Georgia Southern play this year. But, it will probably be a classic as usual. xnodx Can't wait to get down to Boone.

Key may be how much the couple key losses on GSU's defense from last year affect the ability to stop AE. The white kid last year was around him every play, but he's gone.

Then GSU has said they have the worst O in the land, we say we have the worst D, so we'll see who wins the battle of who sucks less.

Look past those numbers OL FU....

Look at the strength of Schedule
Both GSU and Sammy have played Chatty and Western
Western Scored 3 on Samford and 3 on GSU after WCU got a GSU turnover. Samford didn't turn the ball over versus WCU.
Chatty scored 14 on Samford and 20 on GSU, but one of those TDs was a garbage-time TD.

Uncommon SoCon opponents are as follows
Samford has played @App and @Furman,
GSU has played @Elon and @Wofford
Wofford is a pretty good team offensively even though they aren't a good team overall so far

and OOC
Compare UNC to Central Florida
Compare South Dakota State to Jacksonville xlolx
Compare Albany to Miles xlolx

Also keep in mind the blunders by GSU's offense. We turned it over 4 times against SDSU and 4 times against UNC. UNC had two defensive touchdowns and got two more TOs in GSU territory. Against SDSU, the average starting position of SDSU's scoring drives was in GSU territory.

I'll take GSU's D.

I'll take GSU's defense over Samford's especially when you consider how young they really are and how bad the reallly young GSU offense has put them behind the eight ball all year... I think there are four seniors on the two deep and the FR and Sophs (Russell, Rowe, DuBose, Shippy, Heyden, Eubanks, Tinsley, Williams, etc.) are all future all conference players.

GSU has yet to play a complete game this year, and turnovers have just killed them. They are getting better, and I think this will be a good game just like most GSU/ASU games, but my head tells me Armanti is the difference.

Could be, no doubt GSU has played a tougher schedule and two games really blemish GSU's stats,

But so far Samford's d has held up pretty good in every game. GSU's has had a few ups and downs which may go to Blue balls comment on youth.

You know the unfortunate part about defensive stats (especially scoring stats) is that they are certainly impacted by field position and offensive play.

at our recent get togethers YT always tells me he will worry about FU when Furman's defense proves they can stop Wofford. I always tell him our defense will stop Wofford when our offense can keep our defense off the field. :o

Last year's game was one of the best games of all time. Heck, the last three years have all been classics. I'll be surprised if this game is as good as the last three.

Georgia Southern has given up 23 sacks this season (and that's not including the UTC game from yesterday) and the maligned App defense is looking for a statement on Black Saturday.

NP for now though.

As long as App wins in the turnover margin, they should get the win. I'll take my homer pick but in a close game because our defense hasn't stopped anyone for an entire game so far this year. ASU/GSU is always close.

With the way our defense is playing there is no way that we are blowing any team away. I don't see our defense keeping that many people out of the end-zone. It is a good thing that we do have Armanti this year and the explosive offense or we would be the bottom of the barrel. This game has proven that it doesn't matter who is better or who is down it is always a close good game. I give us a slight advantage. We will win by less than a touchdown.

It is a good thing that we do have Armanti this year and the explosive offense or we would be the bottom of the barrel. This game has proven that it doesn't matter who is better or who is down it is always a close good game. I give us a slight advantage. We will win by less than a touchdown.

Good news is, the bad App D is going against a possibly just as bad GSU offense.

Key may be how much the couple key losses on GSU's defense from last year affect the ability to stop AE. The white kid last year was around him every play, but he's gone.
Then GSU has said they have the worst O in the land, we say we have the worst D, so we'll see who wins the battle of who sucks less.

He's on the coaching staff though :D

Not sure if using those numbers proves anything, especially if Penn is at #2. That's the problem with NCAA stats it's over 119 teams who never play each other. With that said the defensive numbers are always skewed from # of possessions and other stipulations.

App State should win this game by 10.

As proud as I am of our team for taking out Chatty, I just dont see us going into App and taking a victory away. Offense is still too inconsistent, regardless of how terrible App's defense is. Plus, they have Armanti Edwards. If he's not playing, our chances go up alot.

Speaking of Edwards, I heard that Coach Hatcher is getting John Deere to sponsor our team this week, so we'll have green and yellow jerseys. Anyone else heard that rumor??

GSU will be able to run the ball down App's throat all day long. That won't be enough to get four touchdowns (which is what I think we'll need to win) though. Well have to have some production from the passing game. The matchup between GSU's receiver corps (who are all redshirt and true freshmen) versus guys like Legree and Gilbert should be worrisome for any GSU fan. I really hope your D is as porous as you say it is.

On the bright side, the matchup between App's offense and GSU's D is going to be epic. The main player to watch on GSU's defense is our leading tackler #33 Dion Dubose. He is a good run-stopper and he has a nose for the ball. At the UNC game I heard some UNC fan a few rows behind mine say "that number 33 is everywhere!". He didn't play against App. last year but by the end of the year he did beat out GSU's 2nd team all-SoCon LB for the starting position. He doesn't tackle quite as well as Chris Covington but I have a feeling AE is going to run into him a few times. GSU's DL is young, but good. The secondary has a combination of experience and good young talent.

As I said before, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the lowest scoring ASU-GSU game in a long time.

A quick glance at AE's offensive production over the last couple of years shows a real emphasis on passing. Moore has taken over much of the running AE has done in the past, so expect your secondary to get a workout especially with Quick, Hillary, Cline, Jordan, and even screens to Moore. As usual, we'll hope to come out on the better side of a shootout. xconfusedx

Woco's triple option didn't beat us to death like I thought it would - the Terriers had some well called passing plays and some solid returns to get the lead. It just appeared that they wore down in the second half with the ASU offense on the field so much. I'm hoping for a repeat of that this week, except without all the heart attacks.

SDSU scores 44 (averagin 31 per game)
Elon 28 ( averaging 37, but I think elon got the points against GSU in the first half)
Wofford 21 (wofford's average is certainly skewed by two FBS and a Chuck South Score. I think they are averaging 20 in Socon games)
Chattanooga 20 (Chatt is averaging 22)

You know I am not trying to be difficult because obviously the GSU fans think their defense is a good one. But what about any of those scores should make me think that ASU won't score a lot of points.

It does seem that the defense has been much better since the second half of the Elon game. Maybe that is the answer.

The final scoreboard is not a good indicator of our D since, most of those scores came on short fields due to our offense not moving the ball or turning the ball over. In addition, do you notice a trend? Our D is getting better each week.

I mentioned the trend and have before said I understand that offensive problems make defensive scores look bad. I suppose one could say that since App doesn't seem to have defense that will reduce GSU's offensive problems and keep the score lower.

I am just trying to figure out why some think ASU will score so little. I guess if you don't turn the ball over and if the defense is as good as some say, then then ASU won't score much. I guess we will see.

GSU's biggest problem this year has been red zone turnovers. Happened two or three times against SDSU, happened against Elon and it happened twice against UNC, plus they got two pick six scores - one on an interception and one on a fumble.

Cut down on GSU's turnovers, especially in the red zone, and their season looks very different. Yes, they are very young on both sides of the ball. There are far too many freshmen starters, but they are talented, and they're learning week by week to play the college game.

My guess is that you'll see Armanti run more this week than in any game to date this season. GSU will bring the pressure - rushing six or seven on many plays. That's going to put GSU in man coverage on a lot of plays, which can be an advantage for App.

I say Armanti gets flushed from the pocket a lot, and App's success will depend on how well he scrambles against the speed of GSU's D. They are faster across the board than any GSU D he's faced.

Yeah, but Western didn't score 2 touchdowns on us. Wait, they didn't even score one.

I'll be honest. I still think our (FU) defense is somewhat suspect. We have done a good job of keeping people out of the endzone while teams amass a lot of yardage. I was very pleased with the Elon game but they still did a good job of moving up and down the field. They simply didn't score. Now keeping people out of the endzone is the important thing, but when bend don't break breaks it can be ugly. Last week is a good example of an offense that has done nothing all year putting 24 points on us.

Also, my pre-season pick for Furman was 6-5 with one of those losses to a GSU team that would be much improved by the end of the year. Now I feel a lot better about our chances to improve on that 6-5 prediction but that is mainly due to ASU and WC's seeming vulnerability.

Now back on topic. The offenses inability to protect the ball makes the defense look not as good as it may be. As I said, we will see if ASU stays under 30. xnodx

Of course he can scramble. That's why I said that the game will largely depend on how GSU's faster D than in the past goes about limiting those scrambling opportunities. If they can do that, GSU's chances are pretty good.

You know that both teams will play at a higher level. They always do, and over the past three years, this game has come down to which team made one more play. Hatcher will have some new tricks up his sleeve that App hasn't prepared for. He always does. I'm sure Jerry Moore's staff is scheming about some new wrinkles too.

I'll break it down...

Albany - wasn't a bad day of defense but wasn't good. 39 of Albany's yards came off a big 39 yard run on a 4th and 1
South Dakota State - 4 turnovers, average starting position on scoring drives for SDSU was in GSU territory. SDSU is a pretty good offensive team, too. 'Nuff said.
Western Carolina - bad offense, but held them to fewer yards than any FCS team so far which includes Samford, GWebb, The Citadel, and Furman. Western's 3 points came from a fumbled punt return.
Elon - held Elon to fewer yards than any FCS team other than Furman (Elon had exact same number of yards against both teams). Elon got an int in GSU territory and Elon scored in three plays. Also don't forget that GSU's offense gave up a safety. I'd say 9 of the 28 points are attributable to the GSU offense.
Wofford - didn't contain them as well as Chatty, but I think everyone will agree Wofford will be able to rack up yards unless their injuries continue to get worse.
UNC - D played reasonably well versus UNC. Two defensive TDs by UNC and two turnovers in GSU territory meant UNC's backups were in the game in the third quarter. GSU absolutely squashed UNC's offensive backups for whatever that is worth. Would have liked to see what we could do versus their first-string offense for four quarters, but we'll never know.
Chatty - We are the first team to hold Chatty under 300 yards of offense so far. Chatty had 241 yards of offense against us.

May not be anything that looks outstanding on paper, but I think you could argue GSU has a better D than Samford, and Samford's D is pretty good. The only SoCon team that might have a better defense is Elon, but Elon and GSU don't have any common opponents yet so it's hard to make a comparison.

Also, Chatty got about 60 of those yards in garbage time with less than two minutes to go when they were throwing it all over the yard. Granted they got the yards, but GSU had called off the dogs a bit that late in the game.

Hatcher said after looking at the UNC tape that Davis left his starters in the game until the fourth quarter. By then GSU was substituting a lot too. The backup QB for UNC played a bit in the third, but he was playing with mostly starting OL and receivers. GSU's D slammed the door on UNC in the second half, and I mean slammed it shut.

McNeese and Wofford both have top 5 rushing offenses nationally. Georgia Southern is near the bottom of the Socon running the ball. They average less than half the yardage on the ground as those two. Our defense should be able to stop them. If they fail... I will quit defending this defense. xlolx

That would be because GSU really hasn't tried to run the ball until the past couple of games. Plus when you turn it over in the red zone as much as GSU has, and get behind, you don't try to run the ball as much. Count on seeing a good mix of pass/run from the Eagles on Saturday. They've been much more balance the past two games, and it's showing.

GSU can run the ball better than you think. Adam Urbano had 5.5 ypc against UNC and he was out of the game by the time UNC's second-string defense came in. He also as over 5 ypc for the whole season. Yeah, I should have said "slow down" instead of "stop." I don't think we'll totally shut down y'all's running game... but, we better be able to at least minimize it and not give up any big plays.

<i>It took a Jayson Foster offensive spectacle to beat us in Boone last time, and you don't have him anymore. I'll take ASU at +14.</i>

Yeah, but they won't need Foster this year.
Our defense is far worse than the D that Foster run circles around.

With our offense, we're not exactly expecting big plays. It may prove to be the best approach though ... we might be able to sit and churn out 3 and 4 yards per play, burn some clock, KEEP ARMANTI OFF THE FIELD, and get into the red zone, provided we don't fumble it like we've been prone to do. That's been the major problem with our grind it out approach, we usually end up making a mistake (major penalty) or turn the ball over.

If we get inside the 10, we'll probably end up kicking a field goal. That is the way the season has progressed.

We're certainly hopeful that our defense will play as well as they have so far. If they do, we have a chance in this game.

The '07 defense had the same reputation for being weak against the run... and we're statistically better against it this year:

2007: 197.3 average opponents' rushing yards per game
2009: 179.2 average opponents' rushing yards per game

In 2007 the defense stepped up when it counted and we shut down two of the best backs in the FCS (Omar Cuff and Tim Hightower).

I think the defense will step up similarly this year... though, we need them to do it NOW as opposed to December.

I think it is harder to predict Apps performance this year than in any recent year. On one hand I keep hearing how good GSU's D is but I see AE totally hitting his stride and would be surprised if ASU was held under 35 points. The question is will ASU's D hold GSU under whatever number the Mountaineers post. I give ASU the edge just because of home field this year.

Unlike many here, I say " just bet the over no matter what it is".xlolx

No, but I predict a loss this week against GSU, and I think Elon will beat them. However, they continue to pull it off week after week when it looks like they won't. My respect for AE grows more each time I watch him. The guy refuses to lose, the mark of a championship caliber QB. When I said 6-5 I had forgotten how he can take a game over. They may win outxeekx

2 chapionships isn't the mark of a championship QB?

Everyone knew he was good when he took over the starting job as a freshman, but the difference in Armanti and most QBs that start as freshman is that he keeps getting better(you could put Riddle is this category as well). Many times a QB starts as a freshman he will either have a bad sophomore year or no progress as many would expect.

Each and every game I see improvement from Armanti and it is a shame he probably won't get a chance to be an NFL QB, although I think he could find a role as a Josh Cribbs type player.

Truth is, the Apps are the defending SoCon champs, Elon has to beat us, not the other way around. Say what you want about the defense. They get stops when it matters! The only teams that stops the Apps on offense is the Apps!!!! PERIOD!

Might want to worry about your mostly passing offense if the ball gets wet. Our defense may suck at times, but if your QB is inaccurate (see Samford game) or the receivers can't hold on to the wet ball then it doesn't matter as much.

The same wet day, Sept 26th: GSU vs Elon, GSU with 31 rush yards, 122 passing yards, 3 INTs, 1 offense TD in the game.

Key may be how much the couple key losses on GSU's defense from last year affect the ability to stop AE. The white kid last year was around him every play, but he's gone.

Then GSU has said they have the worst O in the land, we say we have the worst D, so we'll see who wins the battle of who sucks less.
I never thought either of these two statements would have ever been made. Our offense and App St's defense bad? The apocalypse must be near.

http://www.gsueaglenation.com/pages/full_story/push?article-The+rivalry%20&id=4081443-The+rivalry&instance=articles_player

I really liked this tidbit:

The one that started it all

The first time Georgia Southern played ASU in the modern era, it was defending its back-to-back national titles in the quarterfinals of the 1987 playoffs.

Erk Russell brought his Eagles to Boone, N.C. on an icy, snowy bitter December day, and was shut out 19-0. It was the first time Erk’s Eagles had ever failed to score.

To add insult to injury, Appalachian fans spelled out, “Can you score?” in the snow behind the end zone.
They couldn’t.

Another difference between Spread Option and our current offence is (besides explosive potential) is that this offence seems to be less affected by the weather. Chapple didn't have any problem throwing the wet ball. Our guys did a good job of keeping their feet, very little slipping on the wet grass. We should bo fine. Personally, I think GSU has the ability to defeat App, but we have to play a flawless game. On the flip side, App should be able to get away with making a few mistakes on defense and still be able to hold our offense in check, seeing as we are not exactly an offensive juggernaut. IMO, the game will be decided by our ability to defend. I think we have the best defense we've had in a while, but we are going up against the best offense we've seen this year- including Elon.
