Let conference play begin!

TT's Predictions
2007 Record: 46-14 (24-4 SLC)
2008 Record: 40-22 (9-18 SLC)
2009 Record: 24-8 (0-0 SLC)
Total: 110-44 (33-22 SLC)

Southeastern La. @ Texas State-San Marcos - The Lions' road struggles are well known throughout the league. Is San Marcos the furthest SLC road trip? Either way, the Bobcats should have some key pieces (i.e. Karrington Bush) back to 100% for this one and if that is the case - TEXAS STATE - SAN MARCOS

Nicholls @ Sam Houston State - This is probably the best opening SLC schedule the Kats have had in some time. SHSU typically opens against a McNeese or Central Arkansas it seems. Colonels are struggling. Bearkats want to get off to a 1-0 start and may have the easiest game, if such a thing exists in doing that. SAM HOUSTON STATE

Central Arkansas @ Northwestern State - The Demons have struggled this year and while there are some who would have been led to believe that would be the case prior to the season, I do not think many thought it would be this bad. UCA has not missed too much of a beat in the post-Nathan Brown Era and will be favored here. CENTRAL ARKANSAS

** GAME OF THE WEEK ** McNeese State @ Stephen F. Austin - Going into the season, I would have thought SLU/TXST or UCA/NWST would be the featured game this week. Times have changed, have they not? Good thing this one is on SLC TV! SFA has a passing game. No question there. They also have a running game. Still scratching my head there. Which team sets the early tone in SLC? I am hard pressed to provide an answer. This is a pick'em game in my opinion as you never know if Moses will go back to being what he was (a pick-off machine) and when you have those, in the SLC - it's best to go with the home team. Southeastern La - Tx St - I'll go with the Cats with some hesitation after yesterday
Nicholls - SHSU - Kats should be able to win this one.
UCA - NWST - Bears probably but the Demons are due for a breakout game.
McNeese St - SFA - Should be a good game and an offensive shootout but I think the Cowboys will stop the Jacks more than the Jacks will stop the Pokes.

Southeastern La. @ Texas State--Cats have too many problems to fix in just a week. Lions get first EVER win vs. Texas State. (hope I'm wrong...maybe I'll change this later) Lions 38-24

Nicholls @ Sam Houston State--You know, if Nicholls gets that option going, drains that clock, and keeps that Bearkat offense off the field, they may have a chance. After all, this is a Southland defense and the Colonels always seem to save their best for conferece. BUT they haven't even shown as much as a pulse yet, so I'll go with the kitties. Sam 35-21

Central Arkansas @ Northwestern State--Bears, bears, and more bears...with a touch of defense. UCA 49-17

McNeese State @ Stephen F. Austin--Both teams have great offenses and both have had the week off to prepare. Do I smell a defensive struggle?! Nah...COWBOYS 47-44

24-8 so far for 2009.

TXST vs. SELA:
Can the Cat's beat their recent slump and pick themselves up for SELA? I'm torn on this one actually. The team seems defeated and seems to only want to play during the second quarter so long as nothing bad happens. I'm sad to say that I'm picking SELA to do the Lion's share of the scoring in this one. 34-20 Lions.

Sammy St. vs. Nichols St.
Sam had some questions heading into the pre-season, but I think it's safe to say that they are a solid team and should compete well in the SLC this year. Nichols on the other hand, seems to be somewhat disorganized and playing lethargically. I'm giving this one to the Kats who can't spell. Kats 31-17.

NWST vs. UCA
The Demons seemed to be one of the top picks this pre-season, but the last few games have shown us this is not so. This seems to be a rebuilding year for the Demons unfortunately, so I'm giving this one to UCA. Bears 41-14.

SFA vs. McNeese
Can these two teams break 100 pts? In all honesty I think it's going to be a shootout between these two. McNeese has shown cracks in it's defense while playing Tulane, while SFA has had several solid wins, but remains mostly unproven. This should be one of the best FCS games of the year and I'm very glad it's on TV. It's a tough pick, but I am going with SFA on this one. Jacks 48-45

Southeastern La - Tx St - Cats wake up game! 48 - 21

Nicholls - SHSU - Kats should be able to win this one. x2 28 - 14

UCA - NWST - Coach lit a fire under his offense this week and the defense is healing up nicely. Conque wants to repeat. 31- 28

McNeese St - SFA- Geez. The tough one. McNeese defense steps up on short passes. Red zone walls emerge. McNeese 21 SFA 17 with 600 yards of offense. xlolx

Last week: 2-1
2009: 24-8

Southeastern La. @ Texas State - Both teams come off very disappointing losses in their last contest - Southeastern at South Dakota two weeks ago and Texas State at Southern Utah last week. Is the 13th time the charm for the Lions, who have never beaten the Cats? The streak continues as Lions will have hard time stopping a Texas State offense that gets Karrington Bush back in the lineup. TEXAS STATE

Nicholls @ Sam Houston State - The Colonels have been lit up in games against Air Force, La Tech and Jacksonville State. The thoughts of the Colonels playing a Scott Stoker defense might make this game more interesting, but Blake Joseph and the Bearkat offense will be too much. SAM HOUSTON STATE

Central Arkansas @ Northwestern State - Bears should come into Turpin ranked in the top 10 (I put them in at No. 7 thanks to some losses ahead of them) and Demons play their second home game of the season. UCA throttled Northwestern State last year in Conway, but this game will be closer than expected. CENTRAL ARKANSAS

McNeese State @ Stephen F. Austin - SFA looks to make a statement to the FCS world in this game that pits two high-powered offenses. Which Jeremy Moses shows up will be the key as the Homer Bryce scoreboard will get a workout. Cowboys have more balance on offense, and a big win on the road already, and that should be the difference in a game that goes down to the wire. MCNEESE STATE

Ok....I'll predict that next year, Central Arkansas will start looking like Southeastern LA did after a couple of years and will start to decline.
I also predict McNeese will be in trouble with losing both their starting runningback and quarterback. On top of that McNeese has to play at LSU, at Missouri, and Southern.

McNeese St over SFA - This one will be a nail-biter! Until someone knocks off McNeese they are my pick.
Texas State over Southeastern La - Which Texas St. team shows up?
SHSU over Nicholls - The Colonels will continue to struggle in this one
UCA over NWST - The Demons are due for a breakout game, but I have to go on what has happened thus far in the season.

xlolx Thanks. I think you will find most UCA fans enjoy the game of football but don't take it like the end of the world if they lose. But I guess losing hasn't been in the picture too much since the early 80s. xrulesx Let's just all us fans enjoy the game and let the 19 year-olds and coaches figure out and deal with the Ws and Ls. xnodxxthumbsupx

I am officially declaring our D sucks and it will be a very long season. Anyone from McNeese got a place I can stay for the next 6 weeks? I could go to your games? I'll be rooting for you guys to take the SLC. If our D can't even finish against SELA we have major issues that will take more than this year to fix. They gave up 24 in the 4th with 10 minutes left after giving up only 20 through more than 3 qtrs.

Only 1 questionable call on the 2 pt conversion when our MLB slammed into Babin and his throw went way over everyone's head and out of the endzone. No one could have caught that ball but they called interference on our DB at the goal line. Such is the nature of the game though.

This is really a slap to the O, because they are really clicking. And Wright's play calling when we got the ball back, on the 49, with 34 seconds and 3 time outs left leaves me scratching my head.

Only 1 questionable call on the 2 pt conversion when our MLB slammed into Babin and his throw went way over everyone's head and out of the endzone. No one could have caught that ball but they called interference on our DB at the goal line. Such is the nature of the game though.

You are always quick to point out questionable calls. At the end of the day, you had no business being in that situation with a 24 point lead and relatively on your way to a victory...

This is really a slap to the O, because they are really clicking. And Wright's play calling when we got the ball back, on the 49, with 34 seconds and 3 time outs left leaves me scratching my head.

Is he like Bailiff and have little faith in his offense running the show with time running out? Does he have a legitimate reason to from practice like Bailiff did when Nealy took a knee? You guys forget that Bailiff was probably in the right there. Was Wright making the 'wright' move here?

On that last part TT, I don't know. We had the ball on the 49 with 34 seconds and all 3 time outs. We had Bush back, who already had 129 yds. 4 pass plays that went nowhere, with the last being a desperation throw. 2 timeouts wasted on the same play, back to back. It was pretty ugly. I think a couple running plays could have been utilized and they might not have wasted one of those timeouts.

The play I question was on their final TD 2 pt conversion. Our MLB ran right through their line and slammed into Babin, who threw the ball high and sailing out of the EZ. No one was going to catch that ball. They called pass interference on our DB, who was at the goal line. But it really doesn't matter because they shouldn't have even been in that situation. As I said. I have declared our D almost impossible to fix. They don't seem to have the fire to finish.

Am watching SFA/MSU - interesting to say the least.

As a side note - Wright won't play for OT, if at all possible. He was the only opposing voice on that sideline in that playoff game.

That said, I still think he had bad play calls today.

Probably true, but I saw the DB grab the "attempted" receivers jersey and knew he would get called for it. Won't really blame the refs on that one, it was clear that ball wasn't going anywhere so there was no need to grab the guys jersey like that.

This game was a multitude of meltdowns.

First the kicker missed an extra point early in the game. He makes that one, there is no overtime. Then in OT, he hits the uprights and costs the Cats the game. Two simple items that had to go wrong for the Lions to win this game.

But there is more...

In order to get to OT, the Lions had to convert THREE consecutive 2 point conversions! And to the credit of that team, they pulled it off. To make matters worse, the Cats stopped the last conversion only to once again screw it up with that pass interference move.

The offense which had been hot all day just needed to continue that streak into the 4th. With the Lions scoring with 40 seconds left into the game to tie it, the Cats at least needed to kill some time off the clock in the 4th quarter (as it was clear the Lions showed up to play and the Cats were ready to go home), and instead were forced to punt the ball away with out shaving much of anything off the clock. This happened twice and on a 3rd and 10 on that last offensive drive (before the Lions tied it up), a delay of game penalty on made things that much worse.

then....

The bobcats have a punt blocked, only to give the Lions a short 30-40 yard field to punt up another 8 on the board.

I'm sure if the Lions had to kick and recover 3 onside kicks in a row to win at as well, they probably would have pulled it off as well. So many simple/small things that had to go right for the Lions to win it, and the Cats managed to blow it and allow these things to take place! Congratulations to SELa, they played like winners and earned that W today.

Bears pull off a shutout in conference on the road!

34 - 0

versus the Demons!

I still don't have much confidence in the offense, but if the teams we play continue to let the Bears practice on finding chemistry, it's gonna be a good year. SFA next week...game of the week in the SLC! IMO. xlolx

Your "D" never stopped us...we didn't have the ball in the first half and only ran 24 plays. We simply took the game over in the fourth quarter.

As for the pass interference call on the two-point conversion, there wasn't anything "questionable" about it...your LB was clearly and obviously undressing Simmie Yarborough from the time the ball was snapped and it would have been easily catchable had he not been interfered with...besides, they could have just as easily called holding and the result would have been the same.

Agree to an extent. Don't think he would have made the catch, but a holding call was probably the best call in that situation. Either way SELa gets another shot at the two points and the end results are the same. But like I said, I don't think he was going to get that ball, so there was no need to grab the guys jersey. One of many things that went wrong that day. Congrats on the W, you guys definitely deserved it that day.

Well, I considered giving the upset to SFA, but thought McNeese would find a way to put them away. Judging by the stats I was partly right, but looks like McNeese just couldn't stop shooting themselves in the foot.

Then there is that worst meltdown in TxState history. 24 points in a quarter, helped by a blocked punt, three consecutive two point conversions, and two missed extra points by the Bobcats (with the last one adding to the drama by hitting the uprights). It was something you'd only see in a movie, but alas was witnessed by over 10,000 (not a stellar crowd) people in Bobcat Stadium.

So, I go .500 for the week, my worst week by far. I want to say I had one of the best records up until the last two weeks. SLC may be a dog fight this year, and as TT mentioned on another thread, this could affect my record.

Week 1: 7-1
Week 2: 4-2
Week 3: 6-1
Week 4: 7-1
Week 5: 2-1
Week 6: 2-2 *

*SLC: 2-2
Overall: 28-8

I don't know if he would have caught it either, but if our receiver gets a free release without being held in place - IMO - it would have been catchable in the back of the endzone which was the play design. The ball looked uncatchable because he wasn't allowed to run his route and the ball was thrown where he was supposed to be.

He really didn't hold him all that much, the guy was still moving forward but slowed down a bit by the jersey grabbing as the receiver went past the LB. Judging by that, and where the ball was thrown (Babin was under pressure as he made the throw, maybe forcing him to release it earlier than he wanted to), I really don't think he would have made it in time. Regardless, the LB grabbed the jersey and deserved to be called for it.

McNeese St - SFA - Should be a good game and an offensive shootout but I think the Cowboys will stop the Jacks more than the Jacks will stop the Pokes.

xrolleyesx Guess I forgot to figure in how many times the Pokes would stop the Pokes xsmhx

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Good luck in Thibodaux next weekend.
