BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb quarterback Stan Doolittle (Ninety Six, S.C.) has been named the Big South football Choice Hotels Offensive Player of the Week and teammate Marty Patterson (Mt. Airy, Ga.) has been named the Defensive Player of the Week for games played during Week 2 of the 2009 regular-season, it was announced today by the Conference office. In addition, Stony Brook kicker Wesley Skiffington (Brandon, Fla.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week, while Liberty running back Aldreakis Allen (Colbert, Ga.) has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.

Doolittle, a senior, led Gardner-Webb to a 27-20 road win at Western Carolina on Saturday. He helped GWU build a 20-0 lead, then directed the game-winning rally in the final minutes. Doolittle finished with 295 of Gardner-Webb’s 349 yards of total offense, went 23-of-40 passing for 265 yards and one touchdown, and added 30 yards on the ground. He managed a 12-play, 79-yard game-winning touchdown drive in 4 minutes and 16 seconds, where he completed 4-of-6 passes for 56 yards and three first downs, before capping the drive with his one-yard sneak with 2:02 remaining for the final margin.

Patterson, a junior, recorded seven tackles from his linebacker position, including six solo stops, in the Runnin’ Bulldogs road win at Western Carolina. He added 2.0 tackles-for-loss (minus-6 yards), including a four-yard sack. He helped limit Western Carolina to 43 rushing yards on 25 attempts, 3-of-14 on third downs, and two fourth down stops.

Skiffington, a redshirt-freshman, scored seven of Stony Brook’s 13 points at Colgate on Saturday. He hit a pair of 36-yard field goals to set his career-long, and made his lone extra point attempt. Skiffington extended his perfect streak in his first season as the Seawolves’ place kicker, making 3-of-3 FG and 2-of-2 PATs in two games.

Allen rushed 13 times for 50 yards and caught two passes for nine yards in Liberty’s win over North Carolina Central. He scored his first career touchdown, finding the end zone from one-yard out in the fourth quarter to give the Flames a 21-10 lead. Allen’s score was a momentum changer, as Liberty scored one play after forcing an NCCU fumble that allowed the Flames to pull away from the Eagles.
