Players of the Week from Week No. 1
Most would say that kicking field goals after a three-year hiatus would not be the equivalent to riding a bike after the same period of time, but Ryan Griffith of Southern Utah may have found doing both just as easy. The senior played wide receiver for the Thunderbirds the last three years, but switched to kicker last spring, beat out two recruited kickers in the fall camp and earned the first Great West Special Teams Player of the Week after hitting on all five of his attempts in SUU’s 36-7 win Thursday over Dixie State. The other winners from Week No. 1 were quarterback Noah Shepard from South Dakota as Offensive Player of the Week and Joel Schwenzfeier from North Dakota from as Defensive Player of the Week. Schwenzfeier tied a school record with three interceptions in UND’s loss to pass-happy Texas Tech from the FBS ranks.
