Meet the 2009 Grizzlies

By FRITZ NEIGHBOR of the Missoulian

A year ago Montana Grizzlies coach Bobby Hauck had a young team that was scrambling to replace 24 seniors.

The result was a 14-2 record and an appearance in the Division I Football Championship. The Grizzlies lost to Richmond in the title game, but along the way found gems like running back Chase Reynolds and receiver Marc Mariani, linebacker Alex Shaw and cornerback Trumaine Johnson.

Now as the Griz wind up their third week of fall camp, they take stock of a team that is a year older and - well, still young.

"We had a pretty good-sized senior class last year, and we have a bit of inexperience within our two-deep," said Hauck, now in his seventh season at UM. "Which is scary, because injuries are part of the game.

"Somewhere down the line there's going to be a substantial number of young guys who need to play and perform. It's always a concern."

Montana's football machine has been in worse spots and still kept winning or sharing Big Sky Conference titles. The streak is now at 11. Hauck is 6-for-6, with a record of 66-16 at UM.

Here's a rundown of the 2009 Griz, ranked No. 3 in the FCS.
