If Ash is smiling then everybody else should be grinning from ear to ear. A dark horse lives Bozeman.

“I liked the energy, the enthusiasm,” Ash said after opening his third fall camp as Bobcat head coach. “There was a lot of that today, and that was good. There were a lot of guys concentrating on the team today, not so much about (individuals), but about the team, getting things done right as a team. I liked all that.”

Day two

Quote of the day

"The experience for Cody and Mark is really starting to show up," Ash said. "They’ve been through this before, they know the offense back and forth, they've both played it. They get the ball out on time and are doing a lot of things really well."

I also like the early reports on our freshman quarterback. He has a high/quick/strong release and sounds like he is the fastest of all the quarterbacks. Not afraid to pull the trigger. My gut is telling me that he is a cross between Iddins/Kempt which will be good in the future.

He will need that high release as we have an incoming freshman OT that is 6'8".

I can already see the qb battle is going to be the same as last year.

Day 3 quote from Dave Griffith Bobcat reporter for Max Media

3) THE WR TALENT POOL IS STOCKED
Well, at least it's certainly more stocked than I've seen it in the previous two years. Akpla is a burner. Desean Thomas is improving. Freshman Everette Gilbert was torching anyone and everyone off the line today. He gained an easy 3 yards of separation for simple slant routes from the slot position. Juco transfer Julius Lloyd didn't do anything spectacular today, but he ran his routes well and caught the passes he was supposed to catch. Mark Desin should be better having a camp to focus solely on being a wideout instead of a quarterback too. Derek Green also impressed me today, making a few nice catches including one in traffic over the middle, which has been his Achilles Heel over the past two years. If the senior Green can step his game up this year, that would be clutch for this young receiving group.

Good news and bad news

Bad news

Montana State junior Arnold Briggs, slated for a starting job at cornerback this fall, was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in a knee and will miss the 2009 season, Bobcat coach Rob Ash said Thursday

Good news

Ash singled out three defensive backs new to extensive duty after Thursday's practice. "I really like Anthony Cosme-Peko, he's doing a nice job picking up the defense and getting in the right spots. I thought Zach Coleman had a good day (Thursday), too, playing some man-to-man in one-on-one drills," Ash said. "James (Andrews) also continues to show good things."

More bad but not as bad news.

Starting safety Kevin Retoriano dislocated his elbow today and will be out 3-4 weeks.

Too bad for opposing offenses quote of the day

"Defensively right now Dane Fletcher is playing on another level, and Brad Smith and Dustin O'Connell are emulating him. (Fletcher is) showing the defensive guys how to play the game."
