Who's on? What's the question? WHERE'S ralph? Who the f--k is Richard Hakluyt and what is his contribution to early American society? :D

Pretty important guy in early American History

Hakluyt, «HAK loot», Richard (1552?-1616), was an English geographer, editor, and clergyman. In 1589, he published The Principall Navigations, Voiages, and Discoveries of the English Nation, consisting of eyewitness accounts and other records of more than 200 voyages. These stories stirred up interest in navigation and colonization. He later helped organize the settling of the Virginia Colony.

Hakluyt was born in Herefordshire. He graduated from Oxford University and took holy orders. He was an eager collector of documents of travel and trade. A work on American discoveries, published in 1582, led to his appointment as chaplain to the English ambassador to France. He later served as archdeacon of Westminster Abbey. He also translated the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's description of his travels.

You won't find him in a high school course but he is fair game in college

Muchas gracias. This stuff is pretty tedious...according to what I have, he wrote Discourses in 1584 which made England want to colonize the good ol U.S. of A. xlolx

How is his opinion faulty? I've only heard objection to his language, not the substance of his opinion.

Calling someone swine may be in poor taste, but it's not unethical. Now firing someone without warning or cause....that's unethical! :asswhip:

Just in case anyone is interested. Here are a couple of snippets from the NY Times Journalism Ethics handbook - specifically how to deal with opinions and opinion pieces.

66. Staff members may appear from time to time on radio and
television programs devoted to public affairs, but they should
avoid expressing views that go beyond what they would be
allowed to say in the paper. Op-Ed columnists and editorial
writers enjoy more leeway than others in speaking publicly
because their business is expressing opinions. The Times
nevertheless expects them to consider carefully the forums in
which they appear and to protect the standards and impartiality
of the newspaper as a whole.

102. In deciding whether to make a radio, television or Internet
appearance, a staff member should consider its probable tone
and content to make sure they are consistent with Times
standards. Staff members should avoid strident, theatrical forums
that emphasize punditry and reckless opinion-mongering.
Instead, we should offer thoughtful and retrospective analysis.
Generally a staff member should not say anything on radio,
television or the Internet that could not appear under his or
her byline in The Times.

The excitement of the JMU game has gone a little bit to the heads of the Chanticleer nation, with some folks actually anticipating an upset of the dominating Dukes.

One radio guy at the Big South media day told me: “James Madison won’t be used to playing in the heat we get in South Carolina. If we can keep the game close, we might be able to wear them down in the fourth quarter.”

Fortunately, this guy wasn’t committed to the nearest psychiatric hospital after that event. Wearing down the team that epitomized wearing down opponents last season?

Actually kind of funny in retrospect.

Expressing opinions of public figures actions is not slanderous. Making false statements with intent to harm is what the law protects us from. When you sue for slander, you have to show that the person made false statements, and knew they were false. Baker can always sue if he wants.

Ralph, we are talking in circles here. I am not going to convince you and I doubt you will convince me. I try to be fairly levelheaded about most things, and I'll admit when I am wrong. Coulson had every right to write what he wrote. I agree with him on what he said; my problem is with how he said it.

I guess I look at I-AA kind of special. Tha there are standards that Coulson has kept pretty much in his tone all season. This time because of deadlines or personal feelings or whatever, That same professional tone was not there; subsequently, the column replaced the firing.

A lot of things went right for us that game - but all that matters is the final score. We won and many experts predicted we didn't have a chance. Even the I-AA.org magazine said we couldn't even come close at 10-1 again in 2005. And true we didn't get 10-1 but we got a lot closer than not.

Appreciate your position, DJ. I really admire Coulson for expressing his opinion, and have tried to defend what I think was a courageous act. Dave probably wishes he'd used a little less strident tone, but I'm glad he did it. Too often these kinds of actions only get addressed in messageboard posts, and not in the media where the sun shines much brighter.

Actually when writing on public figures Journalists have even a wider latitude than the principle you have stated above. To successfully sue for libel a public figure must prove:

1. The statements were false.
2. The writer knew they were false or acted in such a way that he should have known they were false.
3. The writer acted with Malicous intent.

When reporting on a private individual a suit can be won by proving only the first two.

For a public figure such as Baker all three of the above conditions must be met.

Baker can sue but it is rare for public figures to win. The standard is so high that most choose not to waste their time in court.
