DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's basketball team defeated Stanford Sunday afternoon in a 64-58 victory before 5,386 fans at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif. The Aggies overcame a 12-point first half deficit before eventually taking the lead for good with less than five minutes remaining. The win was the first for UC Davis this season and the first against Stanford in 14 tries. Phil Rasmussen led UC Davis with 18 points and nine rebounds. Thomas Juillerat added 15, and Vince Oliver scored 12 points. Kyle Brucculeri was the fourth Aggie to post double-figures with 10 points. Stanford's Matt Haryasz led all scorers with 20 points.

Stanford (2-3) opened the game strongly, taking a 20-8 lead at the 10:24 mark of the first half. UC Davis (1-4) slowly began to chip away at the deficit. A Jesse Lopez Low jumper followed by a layup by Rommel Marentez at the 8:28 mark made it 20-12. Rasmussen's layup less than two minutes later capped off a 10-2 UC Davis run and pulled the Aggies within 22-18. The Cardinal would go to the locker room leading 28-24.

The second half began with a layup by Stanford's Taj Finger at the 18:56 mark which gave the Cardinal a 30-24 lead. The Aggies then went on a 10-4 run, finished by a Juillerat three-point play with 14:28 left in the game that tied the game at 34.

With the score tied at 36 with 11:56 remaining, Oliver was fouled on a three-point attempt just before a media timeout. The freshman came back after the break and sank all three free throws to give UC Davis its first lead of the game.

The Cardinal scored the next five points and led 41-39 at the midway point of the half. The next four minutes featured eight lead changes, the last of which took place with 6:26 remaining on a layup by Rasmussen that gave the Aggies a 48-47 lead. A free throw by Tim Morris with 4:59 left tied the game at 48.

Less than a minute later, the Aggies would take the lead for good when Rasmussen grabbed an offensive rebound off of a missed Brucculeri trey and connected in the lane to give UC Davis a 50-48 lead. The Aggies led 52-50 with 4:04 left before scoring five straight points. A Marentez layup followed by a three-pointer by Brucculeri made it 57-50 with two minutes remaining.

The Aggies led by as many as eight points with 1:13 to play before the Cardinal pulled within 60-57 with 43 seconds remaining. Brucculeri hit two free throws five seconds later to give the Aggies a 62-57 lead, and Stanford was never able to get any closer.

"This win gives the guys some confidence and certainly a belief in the system," said UC Davis head coach Gary Stewart. "At some point you have to have some tangible evidence of what you're trying to do, and this does that. We've got a long way to go and we can get better."

UC Davis controlled the boards, hauling in 40 rebounds compared to Stanford's 33. The Aggies collected 15 offensive rebounds, including four by Rasmussen. Although Stanford outshot UC Davis, 44 percent to 40 percent, the Cardinal only went 1-for-15 from beyond the arc. The Aggies went 3-for-15 from three-point range with Brucculeri going 2-for-5. Brucculeri also added three blocks and seven boards. Turnovers were rarely a problem for either team as Stanford committed 10 compared to nine for UC Davis.

At the line, UC Davis outscored Stanford 19-7. The Aggies went 19-for-28 as Oliver made eight of his nine attempts. Stanford struggled from the stripe in a 7-for-15 effort.

UC Davis entered the contest 0-13 all-time against Stanford in a series dating back to the 1914-15 season. It was the first time UC Davis hosted the Cardinal at The Pavilion.

The win comes four days after the Aggies made a similar comeback against Sacramento State, only to see the Hornets rally for the win.

"I felt we were getting better and better with each passing day, and I felt like we were starting to play as a cohesive unit, added Stewart. "I told the players before we become a good team or a bad team we have to become a team. We're just coming together as a team. It's early in the season, and we've made some huge strides."

The attendance was the eighth largest for a UC Davis men's basketball team. The game also marked the first time UC Davis has hosted a Pac-10 team in The Pavilion.

UC Davis next plays at Nevada, December 7, in Reno. The Wolfpack are currently ranked no. 20 by the Associated Press. The game can be heard live on KSAC 1240-AM and www.ucdavisaggies.com.
