The CAA Football geographic footprint encompasses much of the East Coast with schools located from Maine to Virginia. Members include Delaware, Hofstra, James Madison, Maine, Massachusett s, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Rhode Island, Richmond, Towson, Villanova and William and Mary. While CAA Football offi cially began March 1, 2007, its roots date back more than 60 years.

On December 3, 1946, the Code of the Yankee Conference went into eff ect. Established as an all-sports conference for the New England land grant colleges, the six charter members included Connecti cut, Maine, Massachusett s, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Upon the formati on of Division I-AA football in 1978, the league disbanded all sports except football. Delaware and Richmond were admitt ed to the conference in 1986, Villanova was added in 1988 and James Madison, Northeastern and Williamand Mary joined the league in 1993.

The Atlantic 10 assumed operati on control of the conference from 1997- 2006, with Hofstra becoming part of the league in 2001 and Towson joining the group in 2004.

Since 1978, CAA Football members have accumulated 67 playoff berths, 19 Lambert Cups, 88 fi nal top 25 rankings and 44 fi nal top 10 rankings.

Jack Cosgrove is the Maine Head Coach entering his 16th season.

He has coached in more games than any other head coach in program history (170), has taken part in over 300 games in program history as either a player or coach (assistant and head), and is tied for first in program history for career wins with 80.

During the last seven seasons, few coaches in the Colonial Athletic Association can lay claim to the success that Cosgrove has achieved. He has guided Maine to a 47-35 mark, including two Atlantic 10 championships (2001-02), back-to-back NCAA FCS appearances those same seasons and leading the Black Bears to their first win over an FBS opponent in 2004 when they knocked off Mississippi State, 9-7.

Including his undergraduate years and his assistant coaching tenures at Maine, Cosgrove has committed 28 years to one Yankee Conference/Atlantic 10/CAA institution, more than any other current league head coach. His 54 league wins is sixth all-time, and he is third among current league coaches.

Cosgrove, a former All-Yankee Conference quarterback and the Black Bears' offensive coordinator from 1989-92, was named the 34th head coach of the Black Bears on Feb. 22, 1993.

A 1978 graduate of Maine, Cosgrove was a two-time second-team All-Yankee Conference quarterback and an ECAC All-Star for the Black Bears. He still ranks as the eighth all-time leading passer in Maine football history with 2,836 career yards.

In 1974, his rookie campaign at Maine, Cosgrove passed for 517 yards and rushed for another 558 yards, while leading the Black Bears to their first Yankee Conference Championship in nine years. In 1976, he guided Maine to a 6-5 record and the school's first winning season since 1969.

Upon graduation from Maine, Cosgrove was a graduate assistant coach with the Black Bears from 1978-80 under Bicknell. He received his master's in educational administration from Maine in 1981. Cosgrove then became the head football coach at Stoughton High School (Mass.), where he also taught American history, from 1981-84. Cosgrove is a Sharon, Mass., native and graduated from Sharon High School.

In 1985, he became an offensive assistant at Boston College, assisting with the quarterbacks and working with the wide receivers. In 1986, he helped direct the Eagles to a 9-3 record and a victory in the Hall of Fame Bowl.

He returned to Maine in 1987 as the quarterbacks and receivers coach for Murphy. His coaching helped develop Mike Buck, the Maine career passing leader, who led the Black Bears to their first NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearance in 1987.
In 1988, he was promoted to pass game coordinator and directed the Yankee Conference's top passing offense.

In 1989, he was promoted to offensive coordinator by first-year head coach Tom Lichtenberg. Cosgrove coached the Yankee Conference's top offensive team, as the Black Bears averaged over 440 yards a game in total offense en route to a school-record nine wins, the Yankee Conference championship, and the school's second NCAA tournament appearance in three years. From 1990-92, he continued to serve as the top offensive assistant under Ferentz.

Sean McDonnell enters his 10th season as the head coach of the University of New Hampshire football team and now sports a winning record of 60-46-0 after leading his 2007 Wildcats to their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA championships (three times advancing to the quarterfinals). UNH is the only team in conference history to make the quarterfinals three consecutive times and McDonnell has led the ‘Cats to an eye-popping 37-14 record over the last four seasons. McDonnell has returned UNH football to the upper echelon of the FCS and has recruited several All-Americans and NFL players, including the likes of Walter Payton Award winning QB Ricky Santos and the all-time NCAA FCS record holder for TD catches in WR David Ball, who surpassed Jerry Rice’s college mark of 51 TDs with his 58.

In 2005, McDonnell was honored as the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year by the Sports Network, after leading his Wildcats to a record-breaking 11-2 season, an Atlantic 10 Championship title, and a second straight NCAA apperance in the I-AA quarterfinals.

McDonnell, who served as offensive coordinator for the Wildcats for five seasons prior to being hired, was named the 19th head coach of the UNH football program on April 22, 1999. McDonnell replaced legendary head coach Bill Bowes, who retired after 27 years as the mentor of the Wildcats. McDonnell served eight seasons as a Wildcat assistant and completed his fifth in 1998 as the team’s offensive coordinator. McDonnell rejoined the Wildcats as an assistant coach before the 1991 spring camp, and in his first two seasons, McDonnell worked with the quarterbacks and receivers. In 1997, McDonnell was named the recipient of “The College Assistant Coach Award” by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in recognition of his quality of performance, loyalty and longevity. A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., McDonnell was a standout defensive back for UNH. He started for the 1975 and 1976 Yankee Conference Championship teams and came back to start for the 1978 squad. After his graduation from UNH in 1978, he spent one year as an assistant coach at Manchester (N.H.) Memorial High School and followed that up with a three-year stint at Manchester West (1980-82). McDonnell worked as the defensive coordinator at Hamilton College for two seasons (1983-84) and subsequently spent three years (1985-87) coaching the receivers and tight ends at former conference-rival Boston University. During the 1988 campaign, McDonnell served as a graduate assistant coach at Boston College. He spent two seasons as an assistant at Columbia (1989-90) prior to his coaching debut in Durham.

Rocky Hager enters his sixth season at the helm of the Northeastern football team, and under his leadership, the Huskies are poised to make a move up in CAA Football, one of the strongest and most competitive conferences in the Football Championship Subdivision. For 2009, Hager will bring his veteran squad to the field in the hopes of winning a CAA Football championship.

Hager has had tremendous success developing his players into stars on the field and in the classroom. In his five seasons at Northeastern, he has placed 29 Huskies on All-Conference teams, including six on the first team, and had two All-Americans. Last season alone, Brian Mandeville, Alex Broomfield, Phil Higgins, Kevin Newhall and Nate Thellen earned All-CAA Football honors. In addition, 33 players have been named to the Academic All-Conference team on Hager’s watch, including four-time Academic All-Conference selection Anthony Orio, who recently graduated from Northeastern summa cum laude and was a semifinalist for the 2008 Draddy Trophy, awarded to the nation's best student-athlete.

Hager, who has 30 years of college coaching experience, was introduced as the 10th head football coach in Northeastern history on March 10, 2004. He has enjoyed enormous success throughout his career, having won four national championships while at North Dakota State – two as a head coach, two as an assistant. He is a man who knows what it takes to compete at college football’s highest level, coming to Northeastern from former Big East member Temple. Noted for his toughness and character, Hager is working tirelessly to build the Huskies into a national power.

Trainer returns to Rhode Island after he joined the coaching staff at Bowling Green back in December where he served as the Assistant Head Coach under two-time Division I-AA Coach of the Year Dave Clawson.

During the 2008 season at Rhode Island, Trainer's defensive unit forced URI opponents into 11 fumbles, which ranked in the top five of CAA Football. 11 months to the day of his introduction as Richmond’s 33rd head coach, Mike London ’83 led the Spiders to their first-ever National Championship.

Richmond finished off its memorable title run with a convincing 24-7 triumph over fourth-seeded Montana in the FCS title game – its ninth-consecutive victory and its fourth-straight over a conference champion. The Spiders thumped Eastern Kentucky, 38-10, in the first round, dethroned second-seeded Appalachian State, 33-13, at The Rock in the quarterfinals and stunned third-seeded Northern Iowa, 21-20, with a fourth-quarter comeback at the deafening UNI-Dome in the semis.

The cupboard was full for London, 48, who was introduced as Richmond’s head coach on January 19, 2008. The Spiders returned 16 starters from the 2007 team that won the CAA Championship, reached the National Semifinals for the first time and won a then school record 11 games. With the weapons in place, London provided the ammunition by combining offensive efficiency with one of the nation’s best defenses to take the team two wins further and capture the school’s first NCAA title in any sport. Although finishing third in the rugged CAA Football South Division, the Spiders went 13-3 in 2008 to set a new school record for victories.

His efforts earned him the 2008 Football Championship Subdivision (FBS) National Coach of the Year honors from both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and American Football Monthly magazine.

This is London’s first head coaching position and marks the first time at Richmond since the Ed Merrick era (1951-65) that an alumnus has led the football program.

He graduated from Richmond in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a year later received a degree in law enforcement from the Richmond Police Academy, serving as a detective for the street crimes unit from 1985-87. The Dallas Cowboys signed him as a free agent in 1983.

Mike and his wife Regina have seven children, Michael, Jr., Brandon, Kristen, Ticynn, Korben, Jaicyn and Madicyn.

A member of Coach Randy Edsall’s staff at UConn for the last seven years, Coach Ambrose is a 1993 Towson graduate. A native of Middletown, Md., Ambrose spent nine seasons as a member of the coaching staff at Towson, starting his coaching career before he even graduated. When he suffered a career-ending injury prior to his senior season, he joined the coaching staff as a Student Assistant Coach and coached the Wide Receivers.

The fourth head coach in the 40-year history of Towson football, Coach Ambrose was signed to a five-year contract. As the Tigers’ fourth head coach, Ambrose follows Carl Runk (1969-71), Phil Albert (1972-1991) and Gordy Combs (1992-2008). He was a player for Coach Albert and served as an Assistant Coach for Coach Combs for nine years.

During his previous stint at Towson, he helped the Tigers establish an explosive offense. In 1993, he contributed to the sixth-ranked scoring offense in NCAA Division I-AA as Towson finished the season with an 8-2 record. The Tigers were ranked 24th in the nation at the end of the season.
