Gary Laney column: Looking for the next transfer QB
November 28, 2005

There is another trend that Nealy follows.

In recent years most of the Southland Conference teams that have had extended playoff runs have done so behind big-name transfer quarterbacks.

Nealy, you may recall, was a starter as a freshman at the University of Houston before an injury ended his season. The next year, he was at Texas State to run Manny Matsakis's high-powered passing offense.

He had a big-numbers sophomore year on a bad team, then an injury-riddled junior season in the first year of the David Bailiff era. This year, it all came together. He's been healthy, he has adjusted to Bailiff's more run-oriented offense, and he is on a good team.

It's not quite the same path that other big-name transfers have taken in this conference.
