New Hampshire Colleges Look at Cutting Sports Back

What’s so special about the number 27?

Chip Polak, the director of athletics at Southern New Hampshire University, is on a task force considering the question.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association allows Division I and II institutions to play 27 regular-season basketball games each year.

Not to pick on basketball alone, but perhaps, Polak said, 25 basketball games – maybe even 24 – are plenty for Division II. Cut out a couple of games a season, maybe a road trip or two, and a school could save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in travel costs and officiating and other fees associated with putting on a game.

Spread the theory to football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and any number of other sports, and the savings start to add up.

definately rather see them play a few less games then to cut sports. Heck SNHU could still play the same amount of games and just schedule St Anselm a few times OOC and save money while still getting money from ticket sales... The schools are on opposite ends of Manchester and back when I followed them closely, they drew a ton of fans for the game every year.
