DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina Central University head football coach Mose Rison has announced the signing of 21 student-athletes on Wednesday (Feb. 4) as part of the program's 2009 recruiting class.

"Overall, I think this is a tremendous recruiting class," Rison said. "I think we fulfilled some needs and a bunch of players in this class can really help our football team."

The group includes 12 signees from North Carolina and four kickers.

"After some careful evaluation in the offseason, we felt we needed to do something with our kicking game," Rison said. "We went into the season last year with one placekicker and one punter. I think during the recruiting period we've addressed that situation, and I feel very good about the young men that are going to come into our program in terms of our kicking game."

The other top positions filled were linebackers and defensive line (5), offensive line and tight end (4), defensive backs (4) and wide receiver (3).

"On the defensive side of the ball, we lost Troy McConico, who we thought had an outstanding senior year, so we really went into the recruiting season with the idea that we were going to address our linebacker situation," Rison said. "I'm really excited with the young gentlemen that are coming into our program."

Quotes from NCCU head coach Mose Rison about signees:

James Barksdale: "Runs a legitimate 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. He will be a tremendous kick returner and punt returner for us and has the ability to change the game. We're very excited about him. He's an outstanding person from an outstanding family and we think he'll be a tremendous asset."

Aaron Byers: "Tremendous punter. We think he's got a big-time leg, and we're looking forward to plugging him into the starting lineup next season."

Frankie Cardelle: "He is going to have some big shoes to fill in replacing Brandon Gilbert. I didn't want to put any pressure on him, but I told him as soon as he steps foot on campus he's our starting kicker. I know he's very excited, and we're excited to have him. We look forward to him having a great career here at North Carolina Central."

David Davis: "Great football player out of South Carolina. He has great range as a free safety."

Joseph Figueroa: "An outstanding find. Coach (Jake) Cabell found him. A local kid, who we think has a tremendous upside and we expect him to be a great player."

Arthur Goforth: "Great speed. He will increase our speed as a running back, and he has the ability to come out of the backfield to be a slot player at times. He's a lot like Tony McCord in that he's very versatile."

Daniel Harrison: "What a great find for us. This young man is 6-5, 300 pounds, and a big-time offensive tackle. He's going to play left tackle for us, and we can't wait to get him in the program."

De'Shan McCutchen: "He may be the best player in the class. At 6-4, 236 pounds, when you see this young man you're going to say `Wow.' He has tremendous speed, great hands, and is very physical."

Ikechi Nnawuba: "What can I say, he may be small in stature (5-11, 255) when you look at him, at the same time he's very strong. He bench presses 350 pounds in high school. He has a great motor and will bring some tremendous energy to our defense."

Marvin Poole: "A big-time wide receiver. At 6-4, he has great size, he's very athletic, and is also an outstanding student."

Tracy Provoid: "Another great find for this staff. He was on a state championship team at 71st High School. The Fayetteville area continues to be a tremendous recruiting area for us."

Chris Ross: "We think he was a real steal. At 6-2 and about 300 pounds, he has a great motor. He can play both guard and center, so he's very versatile. We look forward to having Chris and seeing him have a tremendous impact on our football team this fall."

Marcel Sargent: "He comes from the Eagle family... his mom went to school here. One of the three kids from Butler High School, which is a tremendous football program in the Charlotte area. He is a great track athlete, who will play corner for us. We think he has a real upside because of his size (6-0, 185)."

Allonte Tuppins: "The third player from Butler High School. Once again, a tremendous football player with a great motor, very physical, can run, and is an outstanding student. We think we got a steal in this young man."

Chris White: "An outstanding student out of Washington, D.C. At cornerback, he's a great athlete, very physical, and plays a lot like Rashard Fox. We think we got a great football player."

Tyrique Williams: "Of all the kids in this class, he's the one we really had to fight for in the end. There was a lot of competition for this young man. I was very fortunate to visit him and his family in Atlanta, Ga. We think he's a tremendous football player and he can help us right now."

Zach Wilson: "Unknown commodity in a lot of respects, but at 6-7, 255 pounds he has great hands as a tight end. This is a guy we think in certain areas of the field can be a big addition to us. We're so excited about having him, and we think he's going to make a contribution right away."

Stanley Wright: "Another kid from Charlotte. This is an area that continues to be very fruitful for us. Stanley is a young man that two years ago was a boxer and didn't play football. He decided to play football as a senior and had a great year. He's big, strong, and physical, and we think he's going to be a great receiver for us."
