That will be a nice FCS stadium for the forseeable future.

Nice to see the commitment from the Bobcats to spruce it up as they continue their play at the FCS level.

If you look at the master plan drawing in the first post the low lying curving structure in the far end zone is already in place and contains a very nice locker room for the home team and a nice weight room. The visitor's locker room on the opposite end of the stadium is another matter. It makes most 100 year old Jr High locker rooms look good.

Doesn't look like an FCS stadium to me.

Good stuff, but it will not be ready for this season (only 8 months away). It took ASU over a year and a half to build a similar structure (to be opened in August).

I am looking forward to this.

However, they need to start pretty quickly if they want to finish it by Kickoff 09. I guess they will start hard and heavy after they finish the baseball / softball complex later this month.

When that's done, I wouldn't be surprised if it is widely considered the second nicest stadium in the FCS.

Second to Georgetown that is. There's a certain allure to temporary bleachers.

By the time its done, Texas State will be trying their luck at the FBS level. Seeing as they are eye-balling a move around 2012.

Unless the contractor has his crew working around the clock, seven days per week, I have a hard time believing that will be ready by the start of next football season. We had a similar construction project here and it took well over a year, start to finish...If you started today, you're talking nine months to have it ready...it took us about 14 months.

Hopefully it will be ready, but I would plan on having cranes and scaffolds overlooking Bobcat Stadium next fall.

What is the Capacity? this looks like a move to FBS Stadium

In that last picture, I believe capacity is 34,800. But that is many many years off.

The suites that we are working on now I believe will be adding 330 seats if I'm reading this correctly...

http://www.athletics.txstate.edu/thedrive/facilityprojects.htm

I thought it was a pressbox, but it might not be...it's going to be Private Suites and a "Bobcat Lounge".

Maybe they're renovating the pressbox, maybe not now that I reread above...somebody with more info know?

And after looking it over, it does say completion expected by '09 football season', not 'the Start of 09 football season', so those of you that say there may still be construction by the beginning of next season may be right, but who cares!! I think it looks great and would actually enjoy being there and seeing the construction going on! lol. xthumbsupx xthumbsupx xthumbsupx

ooooooohhh! So they are doing upgrades to the old stadium? While working towards the DRIVE to FBS?

The only thing being worked on at this time is the upgrade and addition to the press boxes/suites/lounge. Nothing else in the Phase I.

We also demolished the baseball and softball fields/stadiums in August and the new complex Phase I will be ready for the start of our home schedule this year (baseball first home game March 3.)

UNHFan, yes, this is all part of the improvements and DRIVE. Not that it all wasn't needed anyway.

So that stairwell on the right and left side that zig-zags up will be how the crowd makes it's way to the upper deck? Forget that! I'll watch the game on TV. xlolx

If that's the wheelchair access ramps, there's gonna be some miracle healings before anyone attempts to climb that thing! How high is that zig zag stairwell? UCA has the home side that is 70 feet high I believe, no small feat for those with little lungs..xlolx That looks massive, too massive to climb. xconfusedx

Elevators were installed in 2006 (was it?) so that is a non-issue at this point other than incorporating them into the new structure.

UCA - don't you go to pro stadiums? They all have stairs or obnoxiously slanted ramps to get anywhere except field level.

If you look at the right hand side of the picture where the grass meets the concrete that is the concourse at the top of the lower level of seats. There is a short flight of stairs (maybe 6 or 8) from this concourse to the bottom of the upper level.

For handicap and pressbox/suite access there are elevators. I think the stairs that you are referring to are not for the main traffic flow, just for emergency access or egress to/from the pressbox/suites when elevators cannot be used.

However I think this is just a rendering and not actually how it will be implemented. The stairs or ramps in the front of the structure that provide access to that first level do not seem high enough to replace the current ramp structure. The first picture in this link (http://txstatebobcats.cstv.com/view.gal?id=27626) shows half of the ramp. There is a switchback at the top of this ramp to get to the top of the lower level.

No FBS for TXST until 2014, if you ask me. That should be the circled date for TXST to have most of the upgrades in line.

Conferences will await the end of moratorium before really diving deep into expansion from FCS. TXST will stick around at least two seasons after they make the announcement. I do not think TXST will want to really tick off the SLC and it's member institutions, since sports outside of football will really rely on said schools for scheduling.

And I agree..."if at all". None of us have any idea what's going to become of the NCAA landscape. The Bobcats may be completely unable to reach the perceived "top level" which could end up being just the BCS conferences in football.

No telling...

I think that’s a good thing. I'd rather be ready and have all the pieces in place before attempting a move up. Let’s generate some success here at the FCS level for a couple of more years (hopefully) and ride that excitement to the next level.

There is always a thread about the argument for moving up vs. staying in the FCS over on bobcatfans.com. And I will say, I love the idea of moving up, as long as we do the things I just mentioned.

So I guess, (I’m saying it too), I agree with the Terror on this target date for TxState’s DRIVE to the FBS.

Actually, a lot of the money for this is coming from a student-passed bill that increased the atheltic fee. Tax money is certainly nice, but a lot of it is just wasted on things like painting a picture of one of our professors on the side of a bus.....
Private schools have to be a lot more careful with their money, which means they are typcially less wasteful.

From a personal standpoint regarding the FCS/FBS debate, I would personally prefer to build up domination in the FCS and eventually earn an invitation to a good FBS conference, like C-USA. SBC and WAC (the other conferences that we might join) would in my opinion almost be a step backwards. Travel expendatures for the WAC would be outrageous and the SBC not much better. Our fans have been travelling better to our in state rival games with SFA and SHSU, so I kind of see the idea of spreading out our conference accross the western or southern US as almost being defeatist. In a perfect world, the conferences would break up and realign with schools closer to them so schools like UNT and SMU would be able to play in the same conference, which would certainly help us out if we ever make the FBS jump.

Honestly, I do like the playoff system we have in place. Seeing a team play 3-4 times in the postseason would be more fun than watching them in a lesser bowl game.

Right now, I think we need to get better at the FCS level and build ourselves a better foundation before we make the jump. We are getting more and more students and fans to come to our games, which is important for a program, and I think if we jump to FBS and start losing to still more teams that most people have not heard of or do not care about, then our numbers will drop again and we will be in the same position as USU or Idaho.

In Texas, schools cannot use any tax money for athletics. Texas State, Lamar, UTSA, etc., get most of their funding for athletics from student fees. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board also requires private donations to fund at least 25% of building renovations. Who donated the $4 million plus for Texas State's $17 million stadium upgrade?

Well now its coming together but this plan stuff has been talked about at Texas State since 2000. The worst was the promises of baseball/softball stadiums for years. Now that the ball is rolling donaters are stepping up. The student fee increase helps get it built too. Good luck with y'alls program. Hope we get a home/home soon.

Honestly it took initiative from OUTSIDE the leadership to get this moving. It was a student-passed referendum that got this whole thing rolling. Once the students called out our leadership, then they finally started to get going. They're gaining momentum quickly and getting more and more donors to step up.

It was frustrating to wait all that time though with promises of upgrading our BB/SB complex, upgrading our FB stadium, and whatnot, only to have sub-par facilities until this year.

Like JDC said though, it's being done finally, even if it did take them over a decade to finally follow through with their promises.

I think there is either 15 or 16 suites altogether, so doing a pretty good job selling them so far.

I drove in to SM this morning for the first time in about a year and Wow that school is blowing up. Baseball, softball is growing, and the football stadium is huge.xthumbsupx good work bobcats.

I drove down I-35 from New Braunfels to Austin last Saturday and as I passed through San Marcos my thoughts were the campus (buildings up on the hills) and new stadium certainly looked like it should be in the FBS. I guess the real test will be the results on the field over the next few years.

But if we go to the Sunbelt will that matter?:D:D:D:D

Will need to keep winning to get a stronger fan base though.

Damn that looks nice!!xthumbsupx We were hoping to get started on our student side sky suites this year, but the economy tanked and we're 100% reliant on private funds (state money might be available in some states, but not Montana) so we're hopefully starting construction at the end of this falls season.

Go Bobcats!!

Our Athletic Director made a statement today saying that only 5 of the suites are left to lease for next season.

I think there is either 15 or 16 suites altogether, so doing a pretty good job selling them so far.

Really awesome seeing they cost $30,000 a year. There are 15 of them.

There's space for the press up there. If there weren't - the Bobcat fans would have no reason to complain as they do every fall when there is a lack of coverage. xnodx

Press Box in same place. As I understand it will be worked on next summer. There is a nice Photo shop of what the stadium could look like after 2012. xsmiley_wix

The presidents suite is being moved to the suite level so that will add additional room in the press box. The old presidents suite will be renovated for TV broadcast.

The new pressbox looks great. And that maset plan is sick! How would they bring the seats closer to the field? Is this going to be one of those stadiums where the field is sunk down below ground level? Seems to be the cheapest/easiest way to do that.

tw_fatcat
August 21st, 2009, 02:24 PM
Yes the plan is to eventually sink the field. As far as I know that is a little way off though. The next thing I am hearing is the north endzone will be bowled in. I would think they would sink the field then bowl it in but as of right now that is not what I am hearing. Of course everything is rumor and speculation for the most part.

The lit up bobcat logo looks sharp. I hope we incorporate something like that into our expansion. How many suites does it have?

tw_fatcat
August 21st, 2009, 05:34 PM
There are 15 suites on the top level and the club level is below that.

They sure know how to do things right at Texas State. I was impressed with the stadium, field house and scoreboard the two trips I made to San Marcos. The new West Side Complex looks awesome. Congrats.
