Wow! Cooley applying for the head coach job! News to me! I know we lost our defensive Coordinator to retirement, but now our OC! Valdosta has a good coach. ASU defensive coach corless..not gonna help NWST.

My vote goes to G. Mathews of UA-Monticello. Excellent coach with the talent he had available. He's worthy of a shot at making it happen with more schollys. xthumbsupx

Correct. These are individuals who have filed as of X date.

As the AD acknowledges, more names could apply before a decision is made. Not sure of Louisiana HR laws and rules, so I am not sure how long a position needs to be posted before a hire is made.

Not that surprising...pretty typical list for a Southland HC position. Northwestern should have no problem finding a quality candidate if they're willing to spend a decent amount of money...Donnie Carthel would be a great hire from everything I gather...I know Mike Lucas thinks the world of him.

He went 4-6 in 2005 but 8-3 in 2006 including a playoff invite. They lost 30-27 to West Texas A&M in the firts round. In 2007 he went 10-3, winning he first playoff game 56-12 then losing the second by 76-73 to Chadron State. This year he went 11-1, winning his first playoff game 93-68 before losing to Northwest Missouri 45-36 in the second round.

He took ACU from being a "never made the D-II playoffs" program to one that I think could pretty much play respectably against anybody in the Division in two years.

My only concern would be that he might leave pretty quickly after turning the program around. But I'd be pretty hopeful about him turning the program around.

1. He 57 years old.
Carthel has spent the last 20 years between Eastern New Mexico and West Texas.

2. He has a farm/ranch that is very close
He owns a ranch just Southwest of Canyon. He left coaching in the 1990s to ranch, and then came back to WT.

3. Has turned down this type of job before
I don't know, but a 3 Back-to-back-to-back LSC Crowns and 44-5 record in 4 seasons gets some attention

4. All of his family is in this area---this is very important to him.
His son is the DC for WT, and his Daughter in Law is an assistant for the VB team.

5. WT leads all of D2 in attendance
Like Mike Leach, he is seen has a hero in West Texas. Winning solves everything. They averaged over 13,000 per game last season and over 23,000 people for the last two Wagon Wheel games. Do we get numbers like that in the SLC?

JAH, look for one of these to be named as head coach ... Campbell played on the last Southeastern team in 1985 and has been a pretty good JUCO coach (was also listed as possible coach in Hammond before Hal Mumme came along).

Listening to Mike Lucas, Carthel is a recruiting machine. Koenning brings a name and Laird is already in Natchitoches and is pretty respected.

Mathews, IMO, is the sleeper pick. He's a New Orleans native and could help recruiting in other areas of the state. Tate knows the Southland well and could aid in recruiting as well, especially into Lake Charles and Lafayette.

Please tell me why Cooley is, IYO, the man for the job...why he is the best offensive mind and best fit for the HC position at his age. Is this based solely on the fact that he calls the plays at UCA? What else has he done for you to say that he is, without a doubt, the best candidate on the list? xrulesx I am all ears.

On the NSU forum he was mentioned as an up and comer but too young for the job...and I agree. He will most likely be a great HC one day but he lacks the HC experience that is so valuable, IMO.

Personally I think we need someone with HC experience, at any level.

My contact told me that the committee has narrowed it to 6 for face to face interviews. It was posted on the NSU forum that Reinebold didn't make the cut...and if someone with his experience as a HC, Coord., resume didn't make the final cut I doubt Cooley did either.

My sources have stated that Brad Laird was interviewing for the position earlier today.

IMO, Brad Laird and Kevin Corless's "stocks" dropped a little once the applicant list was released.

As far as resume goes and experience Laird is probably not in the top 3 but will get a courtesy interview.

Wow! Cooley applying for the head coach job! News to me! I know we lost our defensive Coordinator to retirement, but now our OC! Valdosta has a good coach. ASU defensive coach corless..not gonna help NWST.
