The Classic- The Bayou Classic

Deke Bellavia Reporting

Ahhh…the golden brown turkey, the cornbread dressing, cranberry sauce, family and friends around the table…and plenty of pecan and sweet potato pie. All of these things point to a special time of year when the Holiday Season begins. But for some, Thanksgiving weekend is much more than food and family, it is football--Bayou Classic football.

NEW ORLEANS — They’re coming.

An estimated 200,000 football fans are expected to pour into the city later this week for the 35th annual State Farm Bayou Classic in the Louisiana Superdome.

After two days of festivities, Grambling State and Southern University will face off Saturday for what New Orleans Gambit Weekly newspaper calls “the Harvard/Yale game of historically black colleges.”

“It’s not just a football game,” Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu said of the classic at a “kickoff” news conference Tuesday at the Superdome. “It’s not just a tourist attraction. It’s a cultural event. It’s a family reunion.”

State and local estimates project the Classic will pump up to $200 million into the city’s economy.

“We’re ready,” Mayor Ray Nagin said, confidently. “We’ve got it down to a science.”

As we approached the 35th annual playing of Grambling’s in-state SWAC rivalry game against Southern,
we wondered which Bayou Classic games mattered the most?

We’re talking turning-point moments. Not just because that particular day was (or wasn’t) a big win,
but because it had a lasting impact.

Here are our six points

Why is basketball being brought up on a football thread and FCS football message board. Maybe you should address this question the TSPN sports board where you would get additional responses.

Figured Southern fans were making a sports day of it -- I am sure it would be just as 'Kosher' to bring up the other festivities related to the Bayou Classic on this thread. It's not just the game, it's a big event with a few days of happenings, right?

I say go with the Columbia Blue...I know alot of SU fans still rock the Columbia Blue and Gold from time to time.

As a matter of fact, get rid of the royal blue helmets and go with the yellow joints...LOL

And the complaints are ringing in on the TP re: the Bayou Classic...just as annual a "rite of passage" as the game itself.

With me out of town, told my wife to take her dad to the FQ earlier in the week instead of this weekend. Just not worth the headache...way too many people in downtown, too many street closings, etc.
