View Full Version : UNH-UMass Tilt

Well, no dedicated thread yet, so here goes my take.

There obviously is no love loss here, so let's keep it clean. (Travis- I.E. UNHWILDCAT can smack if he wants, as that usually jinx's UNH. Come up with a good one Travis!!)

Lot's on the line here. These teams don't like each other. Should be a real physical game.

In head to head games this year against opponents, UNH and UMass both beat Albany by 12 points. Northeastern for both teams was a similar game. URI gave UNH a battle, but layed down for UMass. Was URI a stronger team earlier in the year? I'm not sure, but these games tell me it is probably even here.

UMass has been in-cosistant on defense this year, and has had trouble with big backs between the tackles. Pass coverage had been good to excellent. When we give up some passes, usually because it has been set up by the run.

I see UNH trying to run first here. UNH usually runs off tackle, but I see them trying to expoit the middle, as we have been suspect there all year. If they do establish the run, it's going to be a long day, as UNH passing can be explosive and the run will set it up some big pass plays.

The x-factor here is what UMass team shows up. To beat UNH, UMass needs 4 solid quarters of football from both sides of the ball here, something we have only done once this year. When the offense clicks, it is hard to stop them. If the UMass offense scores in the first half, which we have had trouble doing is some games this year, I think it is a close game. If we don't score in the first half, we may catch up, but the UNH offense may be too much to overcome, as our defense is going to give up some points, no doubt.

UNH has played more consistant this year and should be a 3-5 point favorite at home. The only thing knawing on me is that this is a rilvary game and playoffs on the line, and I don't know which UMass team shows up.

I'll give UNH the edge here in this game.

Good luck to both teams, and hopefully no significant injuries to either team that could hurt either team if they make the playoffs. UNH has the better chance at the playoffs, but UMass still has a sniff in the air.

Is it Saturday yet??

You think if UMASS wins out, beating UNH and Hofstra in big fasion (by multiple touchdowns), they can sneak into the dance? If Holy Cross is able to win the PL, and Albany continues their very strong play, I would think the committee would have to at least look at these two wins as quality wins that would help their case. Thoughts?

Terrified about this game, obviously.

No doubt, the teams don't like each other, and the fans don't like each other much (though we seem to do a decent job of getting along on here). Ever since Brandon London I cannot stand UMass, but I respect them. This week will be no different. Good luck, but I hope we throttle you.

UMass is currently 15th in the GPI. If UMass beats UNH and Hofstra soundly, they will move up in the GPI, as some 9-14th teams in the GPI move down. If this is the case, and the committee continues their usual treck down the GPI for at large selections, I think UMass may be in. They will need some help from other teams, but they may have a shot. I still believe HC wins the Patriot AQ this year. Wins over Albany & HC and UNH with their standings in the GPI will help.

With that being said and making the playoffs would be nice, I don't think we have the firepower and horses this year to make a run in the playoffs.

Wren,

That's what is so off about our team this year. It wouldn't surprise me if you do throttle us. I also wouldn't be surprised if it comes down to the last play, or that we may light you up. Usually I have a pretty good handle on games and how they will play out, this one, I don't know. Can't wait to watch though. Good luck to you guys as well.

KAUMASS mentioned at the start of this thread that if Umass scores in the first half the game could be close, and if not, they could be in for a long day.Frankly,I can't imagine them being kept off the scoreboard for an entire half.I'll be very surprised if that happens.

We have started out slow on offense the majority of the season. We have come back in the second half, but against top 20 ranked opponents we can't turn the corner after we catch up...IE....JMU, Richmond & Maine. (Texas Tech we couldn't and didn't catch up).

I dunno how this is gonna play out. Hopefully the Cats can win but knowing how coach Mac can call passes on 4th and short it can go either way.

I'll be there, hopefully the students will be out for it unlike the Hofstra game.

Can this really be a good idea?? (From the UMass Athletics Gameday Blog (http://umassathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/111508aaa.html))

...for UNH, four of the five offensive line starters have been changed due to one injury. With normal starter at left tackle Josh Droesh out with a knee injury, Andrew Elwell, the normal right tackle starter moves to the left side. At left guard Chris McClurg will start as normal starter Dan Larkin moves to right guard. The normal starter at right guard Eric Cumba will start at right tackle with Elwell's move to the other side. All-CAA tight end Scott Sicko is out with a shoulder/ribs strain. Starting at tight end will be Seth Price, who is normally an offensive lineman.

Hopefully all those changes will let us get through the line and pick up a few more sacks.

Last and only other time New Hampshire put 50+ against Mass; 1921 UNH 56-7 according to the CFB database.

Yikes. Just got home from that game. I'm not sure what happened to UMass, but they looked terrible. Coen couldn't hit anyone.

Big Win for UNH. Absolute statement game. Big one next week.

Boy, that felt good! Still frustrated though with UNH's inability to run out the clock. They continue to get offensive penalties that kill their drives. Thank god they had such a big lead.

Heh, had a prior commitment. Glad we were up a ton, though.

Congrats UNH. Not much else to say. Hopefully this puts you in the playoffs no matter what happens next week, so that a Maine win would put two CAA North teams in the field.

It would seem like an impossibility for two teams from the CAA north making it.I think the loser goes home.

I wouldn't say it's impossible, though it probably will require a few losses by bubble teams around the country. UNH at least has a better shot to still make it with a loss than Maine does, I think.

That said, I do think you guys have a better shot to knock off someone in the playoffs than Maine does.

My ideal scenario is that Maine wins, UNH sneaks in to the field at 8-3, and Holy Cross beats Colgate to give us three New England teams in the playoffs.

Three teams from NE would be great.I just think that if 3 make it from the SoCon,that would only leave 4 spots for the CAA.Nova and JMU are already in along with either W&M or Richmond. That would leave a spot for one more.

Yeah, that's probably what it's going to come down to. You're right that three from the SoCon is likely.

Wow—congrats to UNH. Guess I'm lucky they didn't have the game on TV up here in Canada. The loss of Hatchel, Walker, and Burris was just too much for the EIGHT returning starters on the d to overcome this season...:o

GO MAINE...go......U...N...H, tough to get the second part out.xsmiley_wix

What was the deal with Sean Ware today? I don't remember seeing him out there much or even at all.. but they had a closeup of him on the sideline doing sit-ups??? xeyebrowx

Man, I am glad I didn't pay good money to see that debacle. I am not surprised UNH won. I am surprised by how much they dominated. UMass had no heart. Maine-UNH should be a barnburner. Meanwhile, I now have doubts UMass can beat Hofstra next week after what they did to NU.

Thanks for the kind words, UMass fans!

Next week will be a barnburner. As far as resumes go, this win solidified UNH as having one of the best sixteen resumes for inclusion in the playoffs, though that may not matter as there are six teams still alive from the CAA, with both Richmond and UNH having possible at-large aspirations if they lose (though at 4 losses, Richmond would be pretty unlikely, even with the elite GPI).

Frankly, I don't want to leave it up to the committee. Win, they're in.
