Senior Defensive Lineman Was a Second Team All-Patriot League Pick in 2004, Former Punter Matt Fordyce Signs With Arizona
Bronx, NY - (April 26, 2005) – Fordham University senior defensive lineman Aki Jones (Jamaica, NY/Christ the King) signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins of the National Football League, it was announced today.

Jones, a 6-4, 290-pound defensive tackle, was named Second Team All-Patriot League last fall. He registered 32 total tackles, 14 solo, in ten games in 2004. Included in his 32 tackles were six for a loss of 30 yards and a team-high five sacks. He also broke up a pass this season.

A 2003 First Team All-Patriot League selection, Jones closes out his Fordham career with 101 total tackles, 55 solo, including 25 tackles for a loss and 12 sacks. He also broke up five passes and had one interception in 39 career games.

A graduate of Christ the King High School in Middle Village, New York, Jones arrived at Fordham after spending a year at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He was an All-League, All-City and All-Queens pick at Christ the King while also being member of the basketball and track and field teams at Deerfield.

Jones wasn’t the only former Rams to sign a free agent contract today as former kicker Matt Fordyce signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Fordyce, who was with Arizona last year until being cut just prior to the end of preseason camp, graduated in 2003 following a senior season in which he kicked a school and Patriot League record 18 field goals. He capped the 2002 season kicking an NCAA I-AA playoff record five field goals in the Rams’ I-AA playoff win over Northeastern University.

Fordyce was named First Team All-Patriot League as a punter and a kicker, becoming the first player to earn First Team honors as both in league history.

As a punter, Fordyce averaged 38.5 yards/kick his senior year, second best in the Patriot League, and he placed 21 of his 57 punts inside the opponent’s 20.
