SFA football improves to 2-0 in league play after come-from-behind win at Nicholls

THIBODAUX, La. - Despite spotting Nicholls a 19-0 first-quarter lead, the Lumberjacks rallied to defeat Nicholls, 50-39, at Guidry Stadium Saturday afternoon. The victory moves SFA to 4-3 on the season, and 2-0 in Southland Conference play.
For the fourth consecutive week defenses have found it difficult to stop the Lumberjack offense. The `Jacks recorded 525 yards of total offense, while holding Nicholls' triple option offense to 331.
Early on it appeared that Nicholls would be rolling to an early victory. A 62-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Robinson, and a 75-yard punt return by Lardarius Webb gave the Colonels a 19-point advantage. The Colonels took a 15-point lead into the locker room, but SFA came out and methodically chipped away at the Nicholls lead.
SFA cut the lead to nine points on their first possession of the second half on a three-yard run from Cornell Tarrant. The Colonels followed with a field goal at the 7:25 mark of the third quarter to push the lead back to 12, but the `Jacks battled right back.
Outscoring the Colonels, 20-7, in the final quarter and a half, SFA took its first lead of the game when Jeremy Moses completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Taylor to give SFA a one-point advantage, 33-32. A Cory Long field goal pushed the lead to four points, but Nicholls put up their final touchdown with 5:26 remaining in the game.
The Colonels appeared to fight off the rally but an interception by Joe Savoie that he returned 24 yards for a touchdown, followed by a Cory Barlow pick that was returned 63 yards for a score iced the win for SFA.
Moses finished the game 37-of-59 for 416 yards and four touchdowns. Junior Contrevious Parks led all SFA receivers with eight catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Classmate Duane Brooks added six catches for 94 yards. SFA also rushed the ball for more than 100 yards for the second consecutive game.
Sophomore Jabara Williams led the SFA defense with 17 tackles, while Barlow added nine stops and the interception.
The `Jacks return to action Saturday, Oct. 25, when they host Texas State on Homecoming. The game is slated to kick off at 2 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium, and will be televised on the Southland Television Network.
