Since all the Griz fans (and even an App fan) are at the game, figured I'd pick up the slack. Right now Montana is up to a quick 13-0 lead.

So, what's the deal? Why is UC-Davis down 13-0 halfway through the first quarter?

Missed the first couple minutes, but I'm assuming Montana had the ball to start the game, drove down and scored. They held Davis and blocked their punt.... good field postition, and a quick score from Berquist to Ferriter. Davis blocked the PAT

Got to love it, that pick was from true Freshman, Trumaine Johnson, 3rd pick of the season. Not bad for a guy that never played CB in HS. He played WR and some safety. This guy is raw, but could become the best GRIZ CB ever. Only time will tell. He does have a nose for the ball though, but is so inexperienced.

How do you rank a team that is 1-3 but very easily 4-0 against tough opposition especially when some homer ref'ing is involved? The Aggies don't get homer ref'ing even when they are at home. They need to set up a new line item in the budget, if you know what I mean.

You're right. The officials wanted UM to win and the Griz O-Line is a bunch of cheaters. I am sure that whatever team you root for goes an entire season penalty free and the officials never miss a call or two.

Great game by two good teams. Davis is the real deal and have playmakers and could easily be ranked and deserve it. Dont worry, Biggs will take care of those guys.

Good game. Like I said before, its football. Montana showed me why they get the respect they do on that last drive, they made it happen.

In general reffing is so subjective and who knows where they are looking. As for the PI, its just hard to swallow when you see the ref staring at the blatant penalty on such a pivotal play. For me it was jsut they replay that pissed me off.

Anyway, we had our chance to hold you guys, I will not blame it all on a non-call on a 4th down play.

This is a hard 1-3 start to stomach, so close to being 4-0.

Green26
September 20th, 2008, 07:14 PM
Pass interference should have been called on the UM fade in the endzone on the prior UM drive--which netted no points for UM. The Davis d-back was pushing a bit (and perhaps some was coming back at him) in the last 5 yards, but then pushed the Montana receiver (no. 16), when he was in the air, far enough down field and out of the play so the receiver couldn't make the catch.

This was a much worse missed call than the 4th down play. In fact, I think lots of refs wouldn't call PI on the 4th down play.

I was watching the Washington State/Portland State game and a WSU DB did the exact same thing. He went over the recievers back going for the ball. It was Pac 10 officials. No call. The announcers said that the DB has same right to go for the ball as the reciever has and if they determine that he was going for the ball and not the man they usually don't call it.

I agree that Sambrano was mugged in the end zone earlier on a fade and it was a no call also.

I didn't think the UM backer, i.e. Fisher who is a converted safety, went over the Davis receiver. I thought Fisher reached far in front of the receiver, i.e. 30 to 36 inches, to knock the ball down. However, it looked like Fisher may have had his other hand on the back of the receivers neck. Note that I said the back of his neck, not around his neck and not pulling the receiver's neck. I was at the game, and then say it on replay several times. I didn't notice any body or other contact.

We then had a brief discussion with a group that included about a half dozen former college players. They also had seen the replays. Most of them thought that, while PI could be called, that most refs would not throw the flag. The general view was PI should not be called because Fisher had gotten his hand so far in front of the play to knock down the pass, had not used the receiver to get there, and had not pulled the receiver.

I suppose some of us will look at the play multiple times when tv coverage is available--and perhaps that will alter some views (including mine).

In fact, I think lots of refs wouldn't call PI on the 4th down play.perspective is funny, because everyone in our section saw the PI Green 26 is talking about, and wondered why the whole game Montana was getting called but no calls on Davis - I can't seriously believe anyone thought Montana got home cooking on this game - and yes, everyone in my section agreed Quinn has a problem that will cost the Griz big this year. But every play UC Davis was holding with no calls - maybe it is the camera angle?

I'm not saying its home cooking, I know BSC officals suck, by the tv um got the benifit of more no calls at key times than UCD.

Hold on the first TD that streched the jersey and freed the RB to run.
Hold on the Punt block, preventing a player from revovering the ball.
PI on UCD last possesion 3 rd down, UCD caught the ball with a griz db streching his jersey a good foot.
PI on the following play 4th down, questionable in my mind.
JD Quinn, What can I say, this guy is an embarasment to your program and should have had at least 3 Unsportsman flags that I saw.

Ummm....I think there were questionable no calls against UC Davis, and the fact that you guys are speaking of Home cooking or whatever is really sad. Montana played a great game out there today, and more props to UC Davis for giving us a game. Great Job Fellas. I'll have pics up later.

I'm don't know if all the refs were BSC, but it's definitely a different MO. Usually, the Big Sky refs throw too many flags. This game had way too few.

I was sitting in the stands, when the call came. At first, I thought it was PI and was very surprised that it wasn't called. Then they showed the replay and it was clear that the defender was well in front of the receiver.
I am not trying to be a homer, because I believe in having integrity, but that was the right call.
Overall, I saw many runs by the Aggies where the blocker was stretching out the jersey of the Griz player from behind, and that was on the same side as the play was going and they were never called. There will probably never be a perfectly reffed game, but if they are bad equally to both sides, the refs just become a part of the game that has to be played.

Man, I don't know what is wrong with football fans any more. You NEVER used to hear this much crying over officiating. The officials do the best they can, they don't always get it right, but that is football. If you don't like it, find another sport to watch, like soccer or golf. I am not necessarily talking about this game either, I didn't get to watch it. But as a general theme I find it to be getting quite annoying blaming losses on ref's by all the poor sports we have watching football these days. xwhistlex

I'm looking at the UC Davis schedule and I'm thinking this team we saw today will go 8-4 or 7-5. Impressed with your O-Line, your QB, your WR's, and your Defense, especially run Defense.

That is a very solid team, I hope they or Cal Poly run the tables in conference play. That would help the GRIZ a ton. As for their run defense, they did a solid job, but as for our running game, with Schmidt out, I want BH to stick with Reynolds. This kid needs reps and experience. He needs to learn to hit hole without thinking and learn how his line plays. There is just something about him that I like that I just cannot put my finger on. I just have a feeling in time he will be our best rb on this years roster.

Can the Aggies run the table from here on out, and get a rematch?

BTW, I learned a long time ago by being subjected to FWC and NCAC officiating that you have to win despite the officials. Make a stop on the last drive, and case closed. The Griz made their drive count, and we didn't. End of story, next game.

If the officiating is biased, I'd hear it on Sportstalk 1140...and there was no chatter there. Talk to Mr. Kelly, and see what he thinks.

I watched the game start-to-finish. Two good teams, and very evenly matched.
IMHO the refs did not decide the game, and the penalty statistics looked pretty even. I saw some questionable non-calls/calls on both teams (remember the Aggie running back fumble - ruled down) but the first half turnovers, specifically the blocked punt and pass interception seemed to make the difference. I came away very impressed with UC-Davis' offensive line play, their running backs and wide receivers, and a good young quarterback. And that big #99 Aggie defensive tackle is a helluva player.
